Initially, the Me-110 was used as a fighter and the Luftwaffe put their best pilots in those planes. By the end of the Battle of Britain, they had realised that the Me-110 was essentially hopeless in the role as a fighter and they were converted into ground-attack aircraft.
@policemanaaron Actually, it was almost immediately converted to the role of a night-fighter in mid-1940 after they withdrew it from the battle of Britain, and night fighting was a role at which it excelled, becoming the most successful night fighter in history. The use of the day-versions as ground attack planes was secondary to its role as a night fighter throughout the war.
@luismarinaperu Its not wrong, read wilhelm johnens (luftwaffen veteran) book about the battles over the north sea and you will know about the circumstances. the pilots had not the same support like RAF pilots, because of goerings politics, the german advantage was that they had pilots with much more experience.
my grandpa flew ju-88, ju-52 etc. i think he was shot down and survived in a me-110 while night hunting in 1944.
at that time already every second pilot went down in one of these buckets
@STAENZ4LIFE The lack of effectiveness of the Me-110 did not have to do with the age of that model rather it had to do with the size. It was too large to be maneuverable so when going against smaller and more agile fighters it would not be able to aim its guns on an enemy fighter. It was another wartime mistake and both sides made many of them. The mistake the Allies made was political which explains the decline of western civilization.
@MrBEB123 thats true but messerschmitt had modern planes ready for combat at that time, they just had not the capabilities to produce them. in 43 the pilots already had a hard time against the AF with these fighters, they modified them with everything but in the end it was just not enough.
@MrBEB123 size and maneuverability did not , since large especially twin engined fighters like the Lockheed P-38 Lightning depended on their speed , and just like the Me 110 - their guns were mounted forward of the cockpit .Top scoring US aces in the Pacific flew the P-38 against smaller , more maneuverable fighters. Lockheed P-38 was produced prior to ww2 and more than held it's own. Range and firepower and did'nt require fighter escort like the Me 110.
BFW (company/factory) was reconstituted as Messerschmitt AG on July 11, 1938, with Willy Messerschmitt as chairman and managing director. The renaming of BFW resulted in the company's RLM designation changing from Bf to Me for all newer designs after the acquisition date. Existing types, such as the Bf 109 and 110, retained their earlier designation in official documents.
Later in the war this plane was heavily armed and could climb pretty well for such a heavy plane. But it's first intention was not to be a heavy fighter necessarily, but to be an escort for bombers.

Agreed. I remembered the success of the Me-110 as a night-fighter after I made that post but couldn't be bothered writing another comment, lol.

typical nazi propaganda, in 43 the me 110 was already an old plane that couldnt really compete with the allied planes.

Got this from the info:
"The Messerschmitt Bf 110 (often erroneously called Me 110)"
How come that german narrator actually calls the Messerschmitt 110 the "Me-110" ?

Sie marschierten in Reih und mit steifem Glied,
waren schwul bis zum vermeintlichen Sieg,
nachts befummelten sie sich,
tagsüber trafen sie nich.
So kam es wie es kommen musste
jeder wirklich jeder wusste,
verdammt, der krieg ist verloren,
das Kameradensperma kommt aus den Ohrn.
Schwules Versagerpack.

The narrator is enthused.
