How to Dig Straight down without dying: Dig 1x2 down, but stand in the middle of the 2 blocks your digging, sneaking helps. Dig each block carefully. The theory is even if one block leads to a drop into lava, your already on a block to stop you from going down.

ive dug strait down about 4 times to bedrock in my general spawning area, once when i was mining and about to leave with 23 diamonds and a full set of diamond tools, i dug strait down a total of ONE block because of some iron, and died... and i recently got MCcheats and when i used the thing for transparent blocks except minerals i realized that i was very lucky that i didnt hit any lava, there is TONS of lava right around bedrock in my spawning area and even a pool of it on the surface

@obliviongod1337 Yes you do. nothing was blocking the light from the sky so it flowed all the way down the mine. The first fall was only a few blocks high, not enough to take damage and I was on peaceful as well.

The only thing I did use cheats for were supplies like torches and ladders.

Who cares whether it's cheating or not? It's a sandbox game. It's meant to be enjoyable to the creatively-inclined player. Some people like digging holes for countless hours to scrounge up the hundreds of thousands of blocks we need for that truly epic masterpiece we're building.
