It worked for my HTC EVO. I am glad to find a solution, but I wish it would store the calibration. I have to do it each time I restart the compass app.
Thank you! No more crazy driving my phone around like a kid with a toy plane! Every phone should have this in the manual or even have a video on the phone as a tutorial. This worked perfectly on my (previously) confused Optimus S.
lol, I KNEW I was doing it wrong! Wow, the whole "figure 8" rotation is really vague - had no idea it was meant to be a "do a figure 8 with your wrist".
Thanks, I was doing the figure of 8 on my HD2 in a flat plane and it wasnt working reliably, doing it by rolling the wrist works great.
In case it helps anyone else - sometimes my HD2 would show the "calibration needed" screen but recently the compass just wasnt working properly. The compass would wobble a bit but wasnt pointing to North, mostly it was pointing to the same bit of the phone as I turned around.
Doing a recalibration figure of 8 has solved the problem though.
Thank you for this - i was almost crying that my new HTC Desire has dead compas... i was trying to calibrate on all possible ways - except THIS one - :) Thank you again - now it work! ;) HF! - bye
Wow... this method is amazing! I tried everything figure of 8 wise (horizontally, vertically) and doing this a couple of times fixes it instantly! Good going!
THANKS SOOO MUCH.. i was in soo much frustration cuz my desire's compass wasnt working properly and ive tried other methods but this is the only method that worked. Thanks again!
I've had my Cliq XT for about a week and the "figure 8" instructions for calibrating are so vague it's always been off by about 60 degrees. Your iPhone method worked PERFECTLY!!!
you can also do this in the maps app with the compass feature active, which will show which way you're facing on a road (so you can double check it's accurate). :-)
This is WRONG. The iPhone needs to reach each 360 degree position to be calibrated. What you have done is trick it into thinking it's calibrated (and trick yourself apparently). It needs to stay glass up and go around the figure 8 'top first/forward' so it's actually like a car driving around a track where the lock button would be the right head light and headphone jack left headlight and you complete one full lap.
Thanks, it didn't workd with the video, I had to do it like you said: display up and make the phone turn over all 360°. I used to wave in an 8 figure with the up side of the phone in one direction, that didn't work. The thing you said about it being like a car helped me really good.
Finally! Somebody with sense. Great video broski. You showed people it's pretty much common sense to calibrate the digital compass when the directions are displayed right on the screen "Wave iPhone in a figure-eight motion" which is this ---> 8. I have literally seen people post videos of them getting upset because they don't know what to do. How did you people ever pass grades in school. LOL. Wave in a figure-eight, how hard can that be?
Worked really well on my seemingly f-ed up G1. Thanks for the tip. and though the video was short, an explanation of the figure 8 could have been pretty lengthy. Nice call on venue.

Works for HTC Desire too. And you don't need to choose "Calibrate" on menu. Just keep open the compass application and do the 8 movement.
