I was always taught to never hold onto the saddle horn when riding western, that if you feel like you have to grab something else then hold onto the pommel. For me this works. But I've never done it when riding at a fast pace, only relaxed walking or trotting.

i gallop my 4yo all the time and he is great and freakishly fast i was scared at first to but now i love and want to do every time i ride him and just have fun with any horse u use just make sure its well behaved or u might not want to gallop comment back if usefull

When I'm done training my hunter Thoroughbred for the day, I drop the reins, get into two-point, and scream "GO!" And NightRainDream, in my opinion, the gallop is easier... you're in two-point and the horse is doing a lot of the work... but my horses love the full speed sprint!

some of the time they weren't galloping, they were just doing a very fast cantar. you can see that by one of two things. either you can see one foot leading in front of the others or, whenever you're on them, you can feel the three beats of a canter. just push them out some more and you'll be able to feel it!

Beautiful horses...mine won't full out gallop unless he thinks it's a competition, lol. I have ran him on our dirt track a couple times at the fair grounds (I live a couple miles down the road from it so I rode him there with a friend) and we raced eachother. It was hilarious how competitive they get! Mine is a rocky mountain horse and the horse my friend rode was my sister's quarter horse/mustang :D
