Honestly? The guy probably wanted to give you the credit. He may even have agreed with you. Honestly, he doesn't have a choice though--most companies like this simply don't allow the first level support to do anything beyond parrot scripts, and punish them if they try actually be a decent person.
I would just like to say I work at a bank and I deal with a lot of people asking for refunded fees. Now, if the person is question comes in yelling and cussing, I don't offer to see if my manager will refund the fees. On the other hand, if the person is polite and/or in a difficult situation like yours and does not repeatedly overdraw their account and then demand refunded fees, I am the first to suggest we talk to the manager about the fee. Kindness is always rewarded with me. Jerks aren't.
I know this situation personally. I had a company that was taking my money for services I never wanted. I called them, and kindly said, "Hey, I noticed you're sorta, you know, stealing my money. Mind stopping that?" "Sure," they said, "thanks for bringing this up to us." Two months pass and they're still taking money from me. I call them. This time I yell. "HEY ASSHOLES, I'M POOR AS SHIT! GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK!" They never charged me again Why do you need to be unpleasant to get what you want?

The customer services I experience in the last 2 days have been lovely. Why? Because I lost my phone in a shopping mall. Or it was stolen. They were really patient and lovely and apologetic. But I do know that there are stupid customer services.
Hank I don't mean to disagree with you in any way but every job I've ever had has been in customer service and all I can say is... don't shoot the messenger. If the person on the phone was telling you, "There's nothing we can do. That's our policy" then he is telling the truth. Just ask first thing to speak to the manager/supervisor because the people who answer the phones usually don't have the power to handle special requests without a manager's permission anyway.
i work for an international bank and we are outsourced to serve customer based in country X.
in my line of work, there are certain chargesthat you are not supposed to waive and it's something that's already stated clearly in the T&Cs but we do waive out of goodwill,, depending on the situation.
citizens of country X are known to be bitchy and demanding. i hate it when the managers give in to the customer's demands even though there is no good reason to and unjustified, JUST COZ THEY YELL.
Best way to get to a manager/actual human at a cell phone company hotline: slelect "terminate service" at the option menu, even if that is not your intent. Works every time.
I agree that a lot of customer service reps are rude, but having worked in customer service-type jobs all my life, I have to say that the slogan "the customer is always right" sometimes rewards rude customers. We teach our kids not to throw tantrums, but I've seen plenty of adults throw tantrums because they wanted to return an opened item without a receipt more than 30 days after they bought it. They cuss and call the rep stupid, while the rep is kind, and in the end they get their money back.
@andreamantis That was his point. the "assholes" he was referring to are the customers who have to resort to acting like jerks to get what they actually DO deserve. He was ranting about a system that rewards rudeness and profanity instead of politeness and civility.
@TriscuitFan Sorry, it was hard for me to articulate my point fully with the limited number of characters. I realize what he was talking about, but I was also trying to point out that many of the customers are rude to begin with. They actually DON'T deserve what they're asking for and yet the management caves to their tantrums anyway. I think Hank deserved to get that charge taken away, but there are others who act worse and don't deserve what they're asking for.
I'm sorry. This is the first time I've had to downvote a Vlogbros video. I work in retail and deal with a lot of things like this. A majority of the time, it is our policy and we have to stick to it or corporate gets pissed and cuts our hours and then we get understaffed. When customers yell, though, managers tend to get worried and just give in to the customer, which still pisses off corporate and cuts hours and such. So, Hank, I love you but it's bullying like this that hurts people like me.
I've only talked to an American customer service provider once - well, twice - specifically, the guys at audible.com - and it happened to be some of the best and friendliest customer service I'd received.
I work in customer service too - and I am the middle man probably like the guy you represented. There have been times when I disagreed with our policies, and there's just nothing I could do about it. It's really REALLY not up to me. Just sayin.
i work in customer service and i'm generally really nice to my customers but i know that i can be horrible to customers sometimes but that only because they are stupid and are trying to by-pass the normal regulations of the business. i agree that there are some times where a customer has been wrong and its been our fault but i'm talking about the other who think they have been wrong but its just their fault they have gotten in that position and then decided to complain about it. That annoys me!!
I'm only 14 so I haven't had any of this but my mums credit card got suspended because someone stole it and hen we got a replacement we couldn't pay for anything for one and a half weeks because it was still suspended or some reason and the customer service person *quote* "had no control over the situation"

That happend to me with the bank. I overdrafted one legitimate time and ended up owing around $170 because they rearranged the way they charged me so that by the end of the day i DID end up owing loads of money.
yeahhhhh i work in customer service (have for like 8 years) and the APP side of the screen is EXACTLY what we do. We do mock customers and make faces. sorry, but it happens.

I got my phone (blackberry) stolen, and I had to go through 3 or 4 jerks that kept telling me that I couldn't get out of the remaining 2 years of my email to phone contract even if I got a new phone without email capabilities. I realize this is an old video, but I am retroactively looking through your videos, as I am a new subscriber.
Love the show by the way.
Though I would not disagree that APP's exist everywhere, I have found that there are some companies, banks even, here in Canada that have recently turned the tide on douchebaggery. I love my bank, and they are always more helpful and attentive than my expectations (which are honestly low, considering my low expectations of banks in the first place).
I get where your coming from, but with customer service jobs of any kind I think there's also a lot of the opposite problem: people getting yelled at for things that are out of there control or some other stupid reason
I've worked for several companies that started APP practices while I was there and I refused to follow said practices.
Honestly, I don't care if it takes me an extra hour on the phone with a customer as long as I get their freakin' problem solved! My call times are not important to me.
This happens in Peru as well! you don't get anything if you don't start yelling and complaining! or at least get on a rude tone! I hate it so bad! These people ruin your day...
I work as a server and realized that customers that bitch and whine over the dumbest reasons, tend to get the discounts. While the good customers are ignored. True story: I went to my manager with a problem over an order, Now, my table hadn't complained, they were being totally cool about it. But I knew something was wrong and wanted them to get their moneys worth, because we're too damn expensive as it is. My manager told me, "Wait and see if they complain." I was like "WTF!?"
@Jexyss yea i hear ya buddy i hear ya , many times the good customer who you know are cool and respectful should get discounts and deals because good behavoir from customers is less time spent trying to make pissed off customers happy . Thats productivity for any business and should be rewareded with the time saved. The asshole customers will never see that side of the discount world because of there bad behavoir =p
I sat down with my supervisor and I said "I don't want to get screamed at all day. Do you? I just want to do my job, go home, do my shit and relax. I don't want the burden of thinking about the stress and bullshit for what you pay me. Do they pay you enough to deal with screaming jerks that don't need to scream?"
I stopped getting in trouble for it.
CUSTOMER SERVICE WORKERS, UNITE! Don't let them make you a douchebag!
I used to work in a call center for a huge American corp. (I'm Canadian)
I got in trouble no less than 15 times in a month for transferring 'non-irates' (their term) to supervisors for issues like that, which I was not authorized to deal with.
I fully agree with you, I have many fee's coming in for being unemployed. yes that's right. when can these big company's learn there driving away there business.
u gotta take into consideration tht we cnt go against policy. the company controls wat we r allowed to do nd help u with. it sucks, i no. personally, i cnt even ask my superior for help cuz he has honestly said tht his fav part of his job is turning ppl down.
no but since you can't deal with the problem, you have him transferred to someone who can, before he gets pissed off and overworked. Especially since most of the time the caller has been on hold for way too long to begin with, wasting him time telling him over and over your policy says you can't do anything only to further send you down the line is just part of the whole "douchebagery". There must be departments that can handle the problems you can't.
it depends on the customer service guy you get. some are just trying to do a job that must really suck but others of them seem to enjoy all the stupid little rules and bossing people around. i think most customer service people are just trying to do their job. it might be best to ask for the manager right off the bat.
...Some of us assholes are just working for a paycheck in an industry we too have no respect for. But we all got to pay the bills some how, so please be nice to the middle man. Most of the time we think our company's policy is B.S. too.
Yeah. My boyfriend worked as a "middle man". He tried to be as agreeable as possible towards the costumer without pissing off his supervisors, which was, by the way, ridiculously difficult for him to pull off.
I know this is not as cool as Hank but once I accidentally (yes, it was an honest mistake!) on balancing my checkbook and my bank charged me almost $150 in overdraft fees. I called my local branch and cried when I explained what happened (I was in drama in HS) and it worked!!!! They refunded *everything*! I know it will never ever ever work again but to someone else out there who gets screwed over ya might give it a shot! :) Never know! (and yes, I'm a lot more careful now!)
Good one. I'm sure we've all had similar experiences. I will one-up you: One time when the customer service person would NOT help me, and I asked for the supervisor, I was told there was no supervisor (no matter how ridiculous this answer was, and no matter how much I pleaded); I said, "Oh, so you're as high as I can go, there is no one in the organization higher than you?" Answer: "NO." - well now THAT put an end to the whole thing. TOtal annoyance.
I worked for a customer service company...and I have to admit that it pissed me off when co-workers would blow off their customers. I always got hostile customers because they had a terrible experience. I believe that everyone should be kind to their customers. You get more with honey than vinegar. It is a shame that a lot of companies only look at numbers. I am sorry you had to go through that.
The exact same thing happened to me! Only it was for 3 months @ $30 a month. . . and when I yelled and screamed I still had to pay it. They clearly forgot to be awesome.
Are we allowed to use this kind of language, hank? I know you're right, I agree with every word; but is it okay? I thought our tongues were silvery for the benefit of the younger nerdfighters.
I've had horrible customer service at 99% of my encounters with the service industries for the last 3 months, and I was starting to feel like it was personal. (I'm a friendly person, honest!)
It is so damn true. You have to yell and insult the customer service people to get anything done. Why?? WHY?? Why doesn't kindness and politeness work? I'll never get it and as much as I hate it I will keep doing if it's the only thing that works.
I'll tell you what -- I've dealt with a lot of APPs in my life, and I was prepared for a major fight when I called EA because of a malfunctioning Beatles Rock Band drum set.
Surprisingly, they were the absolute most pleasant people I've ever had to contact. I called a total of 5 times to resolve my issue(s), and they were spectacular.
Hey man I agree with you entirely. And you shouldn't feel bad for losin' it with the APPs (That is just amazing btw and I'm gonna steal it. : ) ) Usually if you play it nice they just walk all over you. I work in retail so I usually try to be as nice to them as possible, but I've been burned by it many times. It's a terrible position to be in. You don't want to be an "asshole" but you don't want to be taken advantage of either.
so last night, when i was supposed to be watching heroes, my mom got a call from some company and she basically had to yell at them for about 27.3 minutes (i timed it) and so i ended up MISSING HEROES for customer service. i agree.
Absolutely agree Hank! The assholes in the customer service call center of my former bank are what made me change to a new bank. And, what'd'ya'know... my old bank went out of business a few months later because their assholeary drove away so many customers!
I've worked in "customer support" call centers, and you've pretty much got it spot on. The management sets all sorts of rules and regulations and docks us if we don't say or do certain things BEFORE getting a manager. It was sickening to have to do all that crap when I could have just skipped it all, fixed the problem quickly and avoided the yelling part. Everyone around me was perfectly content in taking up the a-hole role, but I ended up quitting. Of course now I'm unemployed... oh well.
Good for you! You'll find something better. If more people started to quit, the company might think about changing their practises. And even if that doesn't happen, at least you aren't doing something you hate.
it's tech support, i give away money all the time for practically everything. mainly if the people are cool.
if i answer the phone and the first thing i hear is them telling me to shut up and yelling, i zone out and nothing gets done. when they're calm and cool, so am i and we get along great.
sometimes you have to ask a certain number of times, or say an exact phrase to get what you want (for example: some companies wont transfer you to a supervisor unless you ask 3 times) honestly at the call centre staff level, there is not much they can do,the computer programs only work a certain way, and its unlikely that an average call centre employee is going to put there ass/job on the line to apeas customers. its sucks, but 'management' builds it for maximum profit, minimum care, it seems.
I literally just saw a bumper sticker that said "Missoula is my happy place" on a car on my campus, it also had "dear world, sorry we tried. -half of america."
I was employed at a call center and I really hated it but the company instructed up to do as little as possible to be personable with the customer. It was our job to just get the answers we needed and move on. It sucks that being nice is not an option for an employee of a large corp. call center. I also have to deal with getting people that don't speak English because of the damned outsourcing that we have come to in the USA.
I have worked for customer service for lots of different companies. Call centers put me through university. Employees are basically instructed to credit as little money as possible, and most credits require supervisor permission. On top of that, sometimes you'll just run into a call center rep who's having a bad day. I'm sorry to say, but I sometimes resisted refunds if I was in a foul mood or I didn't like the caller. Even though they paid my tuition, I have to agree that call centers are evil.
But that's the whole problem! In the business world there is no(direct) reward for being a nice guy.Being a jerk and charging people for stupid reasons is a great way to make money!
Yeah I try to reward good behaviour by going out of my way to help people who are nice to me at our store, but sometimes it is hard when I have no real authority to do what they are asking me to do, and I have to go get the manager. But then usually I offer this before they have to resort to real douchiness.
Hank, check out ur Wikipedia page. i made it awesome. no vandalizing, just telling the truth. the AWESOME truth. check it out before someone mean deletes it!
Please understand that when it comes to customer service that the policies that are followed by the company's representatives could result in consequences which could possibly lead to termination.. especially if we break the rule for every customer that calls in and complains about that issue. Sure some of the policies the rep may also believe is bullshit but would rather bite the bullet and follow the policies than search for a new job.
I HATE that you make me yell at you!! GO talk to your mother!! ...I mean, manager...
(anyone else thinking that? no? no one? okay.)

Honestly, I don't care if it takes me an extra hour on the phone with a customer as long as I get their freakin' problem solved! My call times are not important to me.

Jexyss 2 years ago 110

I used to work in a call center for a huge American corp. (I'm Canadian)
I got in trouble no less than 15 times in a month for transferring 'non-irates' (their term) to supervisors for issues like that, which I was not authorized to deal with.

u gotta take into consideration tht we cnt go against policy. the company controls wat we r allowed to do nd help u with. it sucks, i no. personally, i cnt even ask my superior for help cuz he has honestly said tht his fav part of his job is turning ppl down.
xKristaBeanx 2 years ago
no but since you can't deal with the problem, you have him transferred to someone who can, before he gets pissed off and overworked. Especially since most of the time the caller has been on hold for way too long to begin with, wasting him time telling him over and over your policy says you can't do anything only to further send you down the line is just part of the whole "douchebagery". There must be departments that can handle the problems you can't.
ghandiwon 2 years ago
it depends on the customer service guy you get. some are just trying to do a job that must really suck but others of them seem to enjoy all the stupid little rules and bossing people around. i think most customer service people are just trying to do their job. it might be best to ask for the manager right off the bat.

MisatoMuerte 2 years ago
The exact same thing happened to me! Only it was for 3 months @ $30 a month. . . and when I yelled and screamed I still had to pay it. They clearly forgot to be awesome.

It is so damn true. You have to yell and insult the customer service people to get anything done. Why?? WHY?? Why doesn't kindness and politeness work? I'll never get it and as much as I hate it I will keep doing if it's the only thing that works.
akailala 2 years ago
I'll tell you what -- I've dealt with a lot of APPs in my life, and I was prepared for a major fight when I called EA because of a malfunctioning Beatles Rock Band drum set.
Surprisingly, they were the absolute most pleasant people I've ever had to contact. I called a total of 5 times to resolve my issue(s), and they were spectacular.
My point? Maybe things are turning around.

You don't want to be an "asshole" but you don't want to be taken advantage of either.
mstrjedisdk 2 years ago
so last night, when i was supposed to be watching heroes, my mom got a call from some company and she basically had to yell at them for about 27.3 minutes (i timed it) and so i ended up MISSING HEROES for customer service. i agree.
frankensteinpuppy909 2 years ago
Absolutely agree Hank! The assholes in the customer service call center of my former bank are what made me change to a new bank. And, what'd'ya'know... my old bank went out of business a few months later because their assholeary drove away so many customers!
ajhkitty 2 years ago
I've worked in "customer support" call centers, and you've pretty much got it spot on. The management sets all sorts of rules and regulations and docks us if we don't say or do certain things BEFORE getting a manager. It was sickening to have to do all that crap when I could have just skipped it all, fixed the problem quickly and avoided the yelling part. Everyone around me was perfectly content in taking up the a-hole role, but I ended up quitting. Of course now I'm unemployed... oh well.
jaketravis 2 years ago
Good for you! You'll find something better. If more people started to quit, the company might think about changing their practises. And even if that doesn't happen, at least you aren't doing something you hate.

RandomlyEpicFilms 2 years ago
sometimes you have to ask a certain number of times, or say an exact phrase to get what you want (for example: some companies wont transfer you to a supervisor unless you ask 3 times) honestly at the call centre staff level, there is not much they can do,the computer programs only work a certain way, and its unlikely that an average call centre employee is going to put there ass/job on the line to apeas customers. its sucks, but 'management' builds it for maximum profit, minimum care, it seems.

Graycloak 2 years ago 2
I have worked for customer service for lots of different companies. Call centers put me through university. Employees are basically instructed to credit as little money as possible, and most credits require supervisor permission. On top of that, sometimes you'll just run into a call center rep who's having a bad day. I'm sorry to say, but I sometimes resisted refunds if I was in a foul mood or I didn't like the caller. Even though they paid my tuition, I have to agree that call centers are evil.

Yeah I try to reward good behaviour by going out of my way to help people who are nice to me at our store, but sometimes it is hard when I have no real authority to do what they are asking me to do, and I have to go get the manager. But then usually I offer this before they have to resort to real douchiness.
