The area is Chalone Peak near the Pinnacles National Monument in Monterey County.
The look out was managed by CalFire but is now closed due to new technology (cameras, cell phones, etc.) You can hike up to the area on the west side of the Pinnacles.
Its a shame that CalFire thinks they can rely on the public with cell phones that dont work in the forest and if they did, the public cant find their heads from their asses when it comes to reporting locations of fires. Also, it would take several really great cameras with great software to find a small smoke at an early stage that a human lookout can find in his/her sleep. The largest fire I ever turned in only got up to just less than 2 acres. And Ive turned in 100s over the last few years.
That was an awesome tower you flew over... I would love to work one so nice. Where was this?
