Ahem. ACTUALLY Bill C-21, which would protect the rights of Aboriginal people (particularly women) under the Canadian Human Rights Act, is indeed very important. However, the (neo)Cons rammed it through with ZERO consultation with Aboriginal people. The result -- further colonialism.
Anita Neville was trying to delay the implementation so that the concerns of native people could be taken into account, as recommended by the (neo)Cons' own Committee and REQUIRED by the Constitution Act of 1982.
im a native the gov will not help there papers and people have been trying to kill us off since canadien goverment was established i dont beleive the govermant resverves are pow camps from wars fought 150 years ago by rights non of the govment has asked natives for permision do do any thing in this land they just do it every thing thats has been done to natives is and was done by force they told us sign treaty or die they told us lies thinking we would not understand well we understand
when did the conservatives get all big and soft on aborginal rights? Sure they deserve certain things. If they get "free" health care, they better pay the SAME TAXES I PAY!
Hey, awesome! I see my MP Randy Kamp behind good ole' Chuck. If Harper isn't leader of the Conservative Party, I'd like like to see Strahl or Kamp as leader. Though, maybe I'm being BC biased :P
loeheingrin, I think you need to understand that we need to help aboriginals integrate with society, rather than isolating them in their reserves and throw more money at all their problems.
The fact that Aboriginals lack basic human rights is alarming. If the Liberals gut this bill it'll keep them in 3rd World state and prolongs the problem. You want natives to succeed then put them on equal footing with everyone else, and giving them basic human rights is a perfect start.
While I do agree the Liberals need to do some cleaning up, be skeptical of the word of the same man who as Agri. Minister promised to deliver immediate aid to farmers yet kept on delaying and giving excuses This bill they are taking about needed to be revamped and needed even MORE consultation.
This was echoed by the Canadian Bar Association and do you know who else? Over TWENTY aboriginal groups such as the Native Women's Association of Canada. One key issue was that this bill did not provide compensation for the bands as they would have to divert their already small resources to complying with the Human Rights Commission.
Did this get addressed by those who drafted the legislation? No. If it's hyprocisy to gut flawed legislation on the advice of the stakeholders, then I suppose it is really useless to consult the public on anything.
Of course "the advice of the stakeholders" always includes giving them more money! The hyprocisy is lie-berals virtually saying to the Conservatives, "Oh no, you are doing a better job in 2 years than we did in 13! I better hurt aboriginals for our own political gain." Have the lie-berals no shame?
So, it is perfectly fine for the government to financially bail out the manufacturing sector but when attempting to reform an already crippled aboriginal reserve system, they should not pay a red cent? For a party that helps those struggling, it is inconsistent. Hurting aboriginals for political gain makes no sense here, since it is on the advice of aboriginals that the leglislation be revamped. If that were the case, then essentially, that implies the aboriginals are asking to be hurt.
Historically--it is the aboriginal leaders (with their own vested interests) that have been the speakers for their communities. They are unelected, some are corrupt. This is why billions go to the reserve each year with third world conditions still existing. It gets back to the basic tenet of the lie-beral party--they never want to solve problems and they want continuing trouble--so they can rationalize why we should continue electing them--to solve those problems. Again, have they no shame?
The Aboriginal file has been mismanaged by both the Tories and Liberals over the years. To suggest that it is simply a Liberal problem is tenuous; after all, the then Tories (like the past Liberlas) presided over the Mirabel Boondoggle and what did the Tories do now? Sell back the Mohawk land to non-native farmers. Now, with the current budget, it is even more clear the Tories are turning their backs, and sometimes, they have not even changed from the Grits. The FNTI comes to mind.

My goodness, after 13 years of lie-beral gov't (the vast majority of which was a majority gov't) vs barely 2 years of Conservative gov't in a minority setting is very tenuous indeed! Let us agree that lie-berals did not, "Stand up for Canada"; however, the rest of us can right now--declare it with pride--STAND UP FOR CANADA!. Why do lie-berals have trouble mouthing the workds? Just wondering....
Power corrupts; it just took the Conservatives a shorter time. But if you still believe that campaign line, then it was good to cut funding to Aboriginals because they are all including stakeholders "corrupt" and "self-interested" (Chuck Strahl accused the Principal of FNTI of fudging the numbers, but he was glad to give money to agriculture after extensive lobbying, what class)
2 years with Tories is no comparison, since they have done nothing yet but give taglines, I'm glad you agree.
Wow, and the Liberals always say they're the defenders of these aboriginals. Now they're gutting bills that offer basic humans rights to them? That's pretty low.
BTW, what ever happened to that clip I recommended? That one with Monte Solberg in it? Can you put it up if you have it?

Why do I love Minister Strahl? Because he speaks how he wants to. He is cheeky and smart. One of the most popular things you'll find in the CPOC.

My god! That lady in the lie-beral party sounded like a fool....or, did she just confirm that she is a fool?

She looks like a fat version of the Crazy Cat Lady off of The Simpsons.
