If the U-boat was running on diesels it must have been using its schnorkel which means all this talk about giving away it's position by raising the periscope is nonsense. Perhaps it had shut them down as they were described as being used intermittently, like a fishing boat stopping and starting, but the lack of accurate information is annoying. Scenes such as that in which Wolfram asks the radius over which his engines could be heard are pure speculation as there were no survivors.
