Everyone should seek out the alternative video to this. It's about documented heroin addicts, I have no idea why it wasn't promoted as the official one, but it haunts me as the most powerful music video in the last 5 years.
My favorite stuff is heartfelt underground hip-hop like Eyedea (you check his and the like's new stuff out, broaden your horizons. I've never heard this before, nor had I heard of Cass McCombs before now. It brought tears to my eyes and this is the first listen.
@vancerofoot Does it actually share the exact chords or do you find them similar because both feature Rhodes? The first couple chords make me think of something, but I can't place it. Want to say a classic country song probably from 70's or 80's. Just got Wit's End after Jenny Lewis & Christopher Owens both said it was their favorite album of 2011 on Twitter.
@borskyviolin Michael is right in the sense that music like this is no longer in the media, the only way to find it is through the internet. In the 70s bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc would have been on TV and billboards all over the place whereas now instead they have this lady gaga crap all over the media. So I would say it is a little bit harder to find music like this. From far from impossible.
@michaelarnold13 It's much easier to find these great artists than it was in generations passed... the difference is we're now bombarded with the bad so it will always take a good filter and patience sorting through until you find greatness
in the 80s it was a bit all over the place but still it was quite easy to find talented bands and more than just 1 hit wonders, the 90s was the generation of Popular alternative or alternative turned popular U2 REM RHCP etc which was fine by me ,then now,i read pitchfork to find greats like Cass McCombs,Destroyer,Kurt Vile and the weeknd,so there is some really great stuff out there but where can i find it ? It takes a lot more work than in the past
I just had the craziest trip of my life a couple weeks ago. Like a rebirth from the lord Jesus Christ himself. This video reminds me of my trip and the people I met and those I saved.
Love the song. This is about the 10th time I've listened to it since it was uploaded, but I just realized what song it had been reminding me of: Lennon's "Old Dirt Road". As great as that track is, I'm inclined to give Cass' expression of weary, tender pensiveness the greater praise.
@thinedoor2 It does bear quite a semblance to a lot of John Lennon's 70s stuff, if you listen to the anthology versions of songs like Bless You. The whole 70s jam-vibe is what attracted me to County Line in the beginning. This song easily betters Old Dirt Road though.
@CHOCOLATEcosmonaut agreed; i've seen it. i'm scarred because of it, but i'll never listen to that song the same way ever again. which i'm slightly glad of even though i probably shouldn't be.
@vancecrofoot Pretty much all of the melody sounds like it came from other songs. That doesn't mean he stole it. A thousand people probably played that same chord progression a million times before The Manhattans. A million people will probably "make up" that same progression after Cass McCombs. Some people will probably be there to say they stole the melody from CM. Nobody owns melodies. It's just music.
I loved the cigarette burning out in the window scene. That was really cool.
Also the whole theme of driving was so perfect, because every time I heard this song, I imagined driving away from home. Some parts of the song seem like he's returning though, maybe to a home that never really felt like it?
All I can think of is driving with tears in your eyes, clouding your vision, and it's a miracle you haven't crashed yet.

nobody can ever say that music is not the way it used to be or not as good as it used to be because people like Cass McCombs keep poping up
Its just getting more difficult to discover great artists,Some people never look beyond Candy mind pop stations like MTV
