Actyally the very first service was conducted by the late Chaplain Robert S. Marcus on the Siegfried Line on Thanksgiving Day i 1944. A picture was taken and it is on the net and the Yahoo! group Remember_The_Holocaust. . I survived in hiding as a teenager in Belgium.

This broadcast comments on freedom for all and preservation of life. It is a memorial to those who were deliberately sought out for extermination and murder. It is an appeal to what is best in human nature. The posts about this historically meaningful and beautiful moment are reeking of hatred. Can we remember that life is sacred and that hatred is destructive?

The destruction of Dresden etc, the killing of thousands of women and children in the "total war", declared by Goebbels, happened as war casualties. There is a difference if I destroy a synagogue in plain peace time (1938) of loyal Jewish German citizens and tax-payers and if I bomb a city without knowing where the bombs explode. There is a difference if I drive children into the gas-chambers or if I throw bombs on them. The effect is the same or worse! But think about, there is a difference!

Here on YouTube, many people, not only Germans, lament and whine about the destruction of Churches (Example. Frauenkirche in Dresden etc.) by allied airforces. Without mentioning the churches in Guernica, Rotterdam, Warsaw etc. destroyed by the nazi barbarians in WAR TIME, I remember the 10th of November of 1938. I was 6 years old. I was living in Heidelberg, Germany. I saw with my eyes the Jewish synagogue of Heidelberg burning. There was no war. The Jews of Heidelberg were loyal citizens!

One such patriotic Jew had won the Iron Cross for his bravery & wore his medal when the nazis broke into his home to 'arrest' him. What did those racist plunderers do? They tore off his medal, threw it on the floor, stamped on it, punched him & marched him & his terrified wife off to their deaths. Other German Jewish WW1 heroes committed suicide wearing their medals!

Peter Rentschler Aikman, stop lying about Dresden! 25,000 people died as a result of the bombings and that is considerably less than the 6,000,000 Jews murdered by your 'heroes'.
I see that you now wish to see an entire people (Israeli/Palestinian Christians and Jews) placed under Shar'ia Law (Hamas would enforce this in a Palestinian State with Israel being liquidated) even though they have never chosen nor lived under such a legal system at any stage in their history.

It would seem to Peter that it is ok for 'Paletinian Christians and Jews to be subjected to Shar'ia Law but not German Jews and Christians.
He frequently complains about the Islamization of Germany and yet would like to see Islamization of Israel thus placing Israeli and Paletinian Christians and Jews under Hamas control and hence Shar'ia Law.

@ElbeRiuer dresden lost over 60000 people in the last carpet bomb raid of WW2, many consider a warcrime due to it's lack of military value.
on the same note, new evidence has come to light that the figure of 6 million jews is being questioned as some of the nazi documentation showing figures under scrutiny has been found to be fake or tampered with.....
the other question now being asked is what happened to 12 million axis soldiers captured by allied soldiers and never seen again?
