Hey Brian, even though I've been watching your videos for a few years now, it's great to go back and watch your early videos! You can hear the passion you have for the profession in everyone one of your words. Thanks to you and Johnathon, I was inspired to make videos of my own (as simple as they may be). Thanks for helping to raise the bar by motivating others to improve!
Hey Brian!!!! You and Jonathan have done more for DJing than Paul Oakenfold, Sasha, John Digweed, Tiesto, Paul van Dyk, and Armin van Buuren combined. Why? Those Djs entertain, you and Jonathan inspire!!!!!
the way i see it is iff you charge $300. a gig and you have one every fri & Sat, thats only $600 a week you cant live off that. i make $600 a week at my day job, and i cant afford to buy food for my family. I charge at average $250 per gig. Iv'e noticed that you are able to afford to do a lot of traveling so how are you so successful? I would realy like some input
Sorry bro, I've been busy with other projects and haven't been able to answer emails/ comments as of late.
I can tell you that $300 a gig is LOW! That's even low for the school market. Of course you can't make a living at it @ $300 a gig.
I do mobiles at least once a week, sometimes I do up to 3 a week. On top of this, I also do the club a few nights a week which brings in about as much collectivaly as a Mobile gig does.. at considerably more than $300 a gig.....
... As far as HOW to get to the point where I have gotten, well, you have to WANT IT! You have to want it in a BIG way and be willing to take a knock here & there.
The best advise I have for someone who would like to go full time would be to make as many friends out there in the business that you can. Become the guy who people go to in a jam and be the person who can sort it out. Work with multi-opps, agencys, banquet facilities, etc....
.... When I use to do this part time, I was in the same boat as you. Then I made the plunge and went full time. Once I did that, I found that when you dedicate ALL of your time to DJing, things really start to happen. I always answer my phone & can be reached just about anytime. I don't have any conflicts with a day job when it comes to gigs. So, I can take thoes during-the-week gigs that many part time DJ's can't.....
... Full time DJing isn't for everyone. However, it's working very well for me money wise and spiritually as well. I'm a happy guy doing what I love to do for a living, but I'm VERY busy and don't get much down-time.
Maybe you should start talking to the banquet halls you work at? When you are doing a GREAT show, make sure you give a card to catering, photographers, & banquet managers! Get thier cards as well and recomend them when someone asks for services.
hey i got some serious q's i just started dj'ing this year (i used to do it in the past before computers were around)Iv'e only had 5 gigs this year and so far all customers have been very very happy with me, yet they dont take any of my cards that i have at my booth, and im net getting enough gigs, can somebody give advice on advertising?
also im very curious you mentioned before that you dont have any other job just dj'ing how much do you charge to make a living on it alone.
whats good brain? i know alot about equipment. but i know more about the business, than equipment. i been doing this sense i was 17 when i started making cds and tapes. yea i said tapes but love the vids man keep up the good work.
Good speech Brian. Even tho you don't work in the area I'm interested I still love to watch your vids and of course new gear etc presentations are great. I should still get that video done about the switches and binary, it is coming... some day.
Many Thanks to You Brian & Johnathan and to all those who add to this great cause. If it wasn't for stumbling onto Johnathan's vids I would have had the jump start I needed and have saved me from lots of trouble & embarrassment but not completely, how you gunna learn? I now have a video camera and will be logging my progress, so you guys can see what a help you've been and inspiration. Thanks a Million!!!
Brian, you really should consider putting Zack in that import section. He's got a solid knowledge of Karaoke, more so than anyone here I know of, and would be a good edition on that basis alone. Just a thought :)
Brian, Hearing this very honest chat to everybody backs up the for real videos of gigs and equipment problems that you have faced and told it just as it happened. You did not cover it up and that says a lot of you as a person and a good DJ. You have started something that is reaching the world.
It has become quite amazing, as you know i seen you over a year ago and stated this myself, i carnt beleave how big this thing has gotten. When i first seen you on youtube, pretty much the only other guy i seen was johnathen and now i think its one of the biggest community bassed thing on youtube (incedable).
I remember that I started watching your mobile DJ gig logs simply because I had no clue what you guys did. My personal feelings at first were the mobile DJs were guys who couldn't really DJ because of several parties where the music sucked so bad and the dance floor was empty. Watching your videos... I understand where those people failed and I have a much stronger and better appreciation of mobile DJs. To me, mobile DJs are the MCs/music guru's of any private party.
Bang on brother! Your videos are excellent as are jonathans. The realness and the sincerity behind both are what make them so good and helpful. Thanks and keep up good work
The thing that makes you and Johnathan so cool to watch is that you guys are REAL. You guys stay true to the things you do and the things you say. We can all see that you guys really want to help without anything in return and that what makes this whole community so special.
I have been watching you guys for over a year now and have seen this thing blow up. You guys are doing something good for the dj world. I respect that. Plus it is entertaining and I get to see what you are doing in life not just how to dj but more the life of a working dj. So thank you for taking the time to do this.
Great vid brian, couldn't agree more you and johnathan have been so much help to me and other djs on here. I gave up being a battle dj, because you guys inspired me to try new ideas and took me to a new level of djing, through helpful advice, comments and videos. If still wanna learn turntablism, give us a shout, willing to teach you anyday dude. Much respect and thanks to you and johnathan, for all your hard work :-)
hey bri! great video! i never really thought of it as u put it there but its special to be part of something like this, every one is helping each other! ive ask other people on youtube questions before and gotten better ansers than i did from the companies that make the gear!
What a great way to start a monday morning, watching this video. As jearley2424 pointed out, its may be time for relection. A lot if not all what you and J have stated about mobile deejaying is oh so true. We are all fortunate and blessed to have youtube and the DJ Tutor community helping each other out from the novice to the seasoned deejay. Its all great.
2 Thumbs Up and Respect to Brian and Johnathan !!!
This community also allows specific personalized questions to be answered and discussed. When I started, I bought (and still own) many of those "how to" videos. For me, they had to much fluff and not enough useful content. I found this community and learned a few tips and decided I needed to "pay it forward".
Sort of similar story in my regards. Saw J's vids wen he was first making them. Made a video response to a video he made asking if people who knew about PC mixing would make videos. Eventually got an importz page when there were only a handful of importz.
I know that all I get from mixes and tutorials are the occasional comments saying "Great Job" or "Good mix, I downloaded the MP3". Can't get that from free kit.
brian your awesome i always take at least one good tip from each of your vids and apply it to my djing. im all about trying to explain to people who ask what it is i do, exactly how i did this or that or what track is that. you and johnathon deffinitly deserve a page in dj history for showin so many people the art of djing.
To tell you the truth I just watch you guys because I think you're informative but more so for the entertainment. I find myself caring about what happens to you guys on your gigs.
PS: I picked your name up fro BigMilan maybe 4 months ago. Another guy who I find just astonishingly creative and entertaining.
I agree with everything you and Jonathan have done and are doind for the DJ community. I'm only 16 and its helped me advance so much in DJing that I don't even know if I would be a DJ still without you both and all the other unknown DJ tutors. Thank you guys...Practice & Enjoy.
I'm currently shopping for a camera - I cannot wait to start making videos! I'm going to approach all aspects of DJing like you and J do - but I'm also going to hopefully introduce aspects of a performing musician as well (I have a band). I would love to do videos on BOTH aspects of working. I'm hoping to get started soon. Practise & N Joy, indeed!
That was cool, I get a feeling its time for reflection and thinking about he future, its helped me a lot, and forget the DJ bit if we can for a minute,,, talked and met some nice guys...so if nothing else its been a pleasure.long may it continue...nice to be along for the ride!
What happened? Silenced by "The Man"! Don't let 'em get you Bri!
But seriously, I want to endorse everything you say here. Like you, I'm a 20 year veteran in the game, but the videos from you, J and in fact everyone else I've watched have taught me things I didn't know and made me want to be better at that thing I'm lucky enough to do for a living.
I mean, I get to DJ for a freakin' living! As far as I'm concerned that's an honor not something to take for granted.
Very nice video Brian. I started using practice and enjoy after J made a video explaining his meaning on it. He gave it such a broad meaning basically saying it is a saying for life. He said all the way through life you are practicing and you should also be enjoying it also. Well thats what I'm doing so why not share what I am learning and enjoy everyone elses input they give. Practice and Enjoy!
After listening to this I may take the plunge and start doing some gig logs. I'd be interested in people's feedback on gigs and especially my specific set up.
Problem is I don't have a videocam yet. Out of interest, what model videocam do you use?
