Ulrich looks like he's doing less than 85 rpm at the start.. I think my legs would ache at that effort if I didn't downshift (mind you on full body exercise bikes as an experiment I've cranked out 275 watts for an hour at 70rpm going up to 350 at 80rpm for a short time at the end. Using my arms to help has a similar effect as raising cadence.)

My theory is that their pedaling action has a lot to do with their athletic past: Armstrong was a triathlete, and triathletes push higher cadence/ lower gear than cyclists to keep their legs fresh for running. Ullrich, on the other hand, was a bunch sprinter as an amateur, and sprinters push huge gears. Two different styles- two great time trialists.

And it's not completely implausible to think that his triathlon days may have helped his abilities as triathlon and time trial bikes are similar: rigid geometry, extended handlebars for aerodynamic positioning, no drafting, etc...
@hellsadore How do I explain it? The individual time trial is one of the most difficult skills to master in cycling, and Indurain was the best time trialist in the world. When exactly did he lose six minutes? A better comparison would be the Olympic games in 1996- Indurain won, Armstrong was in 6th, about 2 minutes behind (also 12th in the road race). With some more adjustment over the years he would get better, but doubting his blatantly obvious talent is just stupid.

The findings are not surprising when we know that Lance worked with a famous doping doctor and has Carmichael, who doped the junior US team, as coach.

Ullrich and Armstrong in top shape vs Schleck and Contador in top shape? No contest. Ullrich and Armstrong would own them. The two most talented riders since Indurain, and probably more so. Armstrong was already a beast as a teenager, kicking ass in triathlons, then winning 1993 Worlds in Oslo as a 21 yr old! Ullrich won the U23 or Junior Worlds (not sure which) that year in Oslo and they would go on to do amazing things! Ullrich definitely underachieved though, pity.

Lance was unable to complete his 2 first TDF, being dropped on mountain stages and just able to keep tempo of gruppeto.
He finished his 3rd TDF with a 1H30 delay.

Ulrich looks like he's doing less than 85 rpm at the start.. I think my legs would ache at that effort if I didn't downshift (mind you on full body exercise bikes as an experiment I've cranked out 275 watts for an hour at 70rpm going up to 350 at 80rpm for a short time at the end. Using my arms to help has a similar effect as raising cadence.)

@TimpBizkit No, I don't think there's anything wrong with Ullrich's cadence- if it works for the man (most of the time), why change? My theory is that their pedaling action has a lot to do with their athletic past: Armstrong was a triathlete, and triathletes push higher cadence/ lower gear than cyclists to keep their legs fresh for running. Ullrich, on the other hand, was a bunch sprinter as an amateur, and sprinters push huge gears. Two different styles- two great time trialists.

And it's not completely implausible to think that his triathlon days may have helped his abilities as triathlon and time trial bikes are similar: rigid geometry, extended handlebars for aerodynamic positioning, no drafting, etc...

@hellsadore How do I explain it? The individual time trial is one of the most difficult skills to master in cycling, and Indurain was the best time trialist in the world. When exactly did he lose six minutes? A better comparison would be the Olympic games in 1996- Indurain won, Armstrong was in 6th, about 2 minutes behind (also 12th in the road race). With some more adjustment over the years he would get better, but doubting his blatantly obvious talent is just stupid.

@purexcrayons The 1999 samples were tested for EPO in 2003 or 2004, 6 samples of Lance Arsmtrong had enough EPO for a positive drug testing, 2 others showed EPO too.
If at the first time some scientists like Ayotte were sruprised that EPO were detectable after a such period, they later agreed that it was true.
The findings are not surprising when we know that Lance worked with a famous doping doctor and has Carmichael, who doped the junior US team, as coach.

After the revelation of EPO found in Lance's 1999, most scientists believed it was not possible to find EPO in old urines, then they verified the experimentation, did the same experience and concluded that was possible. @tom0r0 I'm curious to see the limit of doping and performance enhancements. I want to see what power to weight ratios, VO2 max and other things you can get! It's like tuning up a car. As far as fair racing goes though....... :(. Although I want to see a drag race between a clean and doped athlete of the same former ability.

look guys, everyone at that level uses some sort of performance enhancing drugs. The trick is to keep it on the down low. It's sort of like posted speed limits. The sign might say 40mph, but everyone does 45.
it doesn't take away how difficult the sport is, or diminish how great Lance was (or is).
However, I do find it unfair when a finger is pointed at any *one* person. That's why people like Hamilton, Landis, and Contador claim innocence. It's wrong to blame a single person.

Pro cycling is a joke. All of the top riders these days are doped up for all of the big events. Then, everyone associated with pro cycling bitches and moans about Armstrong. I would love for anyone to name a rider in past 10 years who has won a grand tour GC title and has not admitted or been caught for using PED! My solution is they allow all exogenous drugs/hormones to be legal, & make for great races. Then they die earlier too, so I dont have to listen to them for very long either. Win, Win!

for me he's still a hero, every one is doped in the tour. But one thing if he took along others in its doping network and that is, however, not so good. but his teammates could decide not to participate if they didn't like dope

The reporter is right; Lance DOPEstrong is the cancer of cycling. He would have never won the tour without doping. There are mountains of evidence suggesting his guilt. He should be required to relinquish all of his money and property and sent to prison for being a fraud. It’s really sad that so many thought of him as some kind of hero only to find out that he’s one big lie.

I dont understand why Jan Ullrich have so low cadence, when he should know at that level he competes at that higher cadence resulting in less lactate accumulation..

@Stianlolz The man won a silver medal at the Olympics (ahead of Armstrong) as well as several time trials in his highly accomplished career. I don't think he needs a lesson on Time Trialing.

@YiftertheShifter1 , in general , higher cadence results in greater results.. if you watch both Armstrong and Cancellara (four world time trial champion) they have higher cadence than others... I think that if you are able to do this it will be to your own benefit =)

Ullrich and Armstrong in top shape vs Schleck and Contador in top shape? No contest. Ullrich and Armstrong would own them. The two most talented riders since Indurain, and probably more so. Armstrong was already a beast as a teenager, kicking ass in triathlons, then winning 1993 Worlds in Oslo as a 21 yr old! Ullrich won the U23 or Junior Worlds (not sure which) that year in Oslo and they would go on to do amazing things! Ullrich definitely underachieved though, pity.

@davd1986 There is no way that Armstrong, Ullrich and Indurain would have done a such career without EPO or blood doping, they would have died on mountain stages.
Blood doping is magic for the heaviest riders.
BTW Lance won WC in Oslo because it was a tactical finish, not because he was the strongest rider. But that is cycling (escape from the strongest and let them take responsability, if no one chase they lose) and it was well done
