  • Metheny is playing his Roland guitar (GR303, I guess).

  • what guitar is Metheny using here?

  • Pat's in thrall to his big brother.

  • Metheny is one of the few guitarist willing to make the guitar note sound like the sax note, esp when they are playing the head together. Brecker is (was) all of monster

  • Why is it that the the better the jazz musician you are the uglier the shirt you have to wear?

  • @jsaxx123 That rule is clearly stated in page 17 of the Real Book, right after JoySpring. ;)

  • @jsaxx123 oh my god you are genius! I think that it wouldnt be fair to regular people that some human beings have this kind of talent and also intelligence for fashion!

  • @jsaxx123 I'm sure you were wearing cool shirts in 1996...

  • nice piano work...i love how he built that solo.

  • He's not draining anything, he's just playing closer to the end of the beat, making it sound more relaxed. The rhythm stays solid and consistent and he floats over it.

  • Take your kids to hear jazz live, take yourself, even if you have to pay for tickets with the grocery money. This is past fantastic, don't know what tha word is.

  • this is genius!!!!

  • Geniall!!

  • 手が付けられぬメンバー、マイケル・ブレッカーの爆裂必殺ソロが満開するも当たり前~神がさずけた音だ!メセニーも追従! #jazzm

  • goosebumps, brecker you MFer!!!! what an inspiration.

  • michael brecker you are missed, what a f'n display of might this is

  • Metheny still can't play in time. sloppy mess!

  • @ivanwhodunit what the heck? metheny CANT play in time? dude, he mastered the guitar as a player, hes so good he could easily play in time. i noticed the fact that he often plays a bit later than expected by myself, but hes not out of time, its imho just more interesting and lively the way he plays it.

  • @JeffJefferson95 whats lively about NOT playing in the groove? it negates what the rythmn section is doing. liking draining the rhythmic energy from the track.

  • @ivanwhodunit i think brecker and metheny have a different approach to the piece, pat plays it more laid back and michael more straight ahead - maybe youre right ad they dont fit toghether perfectly in this piece, but to me pat is not "out of time"..

  • @ivanwhodunit Metheny cant play in time? wtf are you talking about? thanks for pointing out to the rest of us how much of a moron you are...

  • Brecker is playing like he did on "Two Folk Songs" on the 80/81 album.

  • I am not from bilbao, but still this Michael and Pat combination is awesome.

  • great song, I'm from Bilbao :-) but i din't see him if he came here

  • From another world man!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Mike and Pat together-doesn't get much better than that.

  • killer stuff!!!!

  • Brecker plays one of the great Tenor solos of all time!

  • Michael Brecker is the fuckin' best sax player ever since Coltrane... That's so true

  • in fact Jack is playing 4 A sections between the two B's during his solo, in stead of 3 A's... it's kinda confusing...

  • hahahahahhahahahahahaaa, what the fuck is Brecker playing??? Just incredible XD

  • Brecker OmG freaking awsome sh¡TTT

  • 8:57, Pat misses beat One.

  • man dejohnette's got just the right feel for this

  • Anyone know what happened at the top of the outchorus? (8:58) I won't pretend a drummer has never lost me before, but I was with Jack here, no problem. Pat's definitely early. Maybe that threw Brecker or maybe he thought Jack was going to take another chorus but, whatever it was, he missed the first bar. You can see he's grinning through his embouchure and Dave's laughing about it. :P

  • @dangerbooboo yeah im with you on that, i thought i was totally with jack then pat comes out of no where, and i became thoroughly confused haha

  • lol @jazzzphannn I know, right? Brecker was just unreal. I've played many gigs with a certain tenor giant who occasionally left me musically "speechless" while comping for him, just completely awestruck at what I was hearing. That said, I think I would have just let Pat comp for a chorus while I laughed at how TOTALLY FUCKING SICK Brecker's first chorus was. Clearly, you're onto something. :P This is superhuman.

  • Another of my favorite recordings......

  • All playing their best here.

  • trumpet guitar.. awesome

  • That was just sick....What further proof do you need...Tis sorcery....Off with their heads.

  • @jazzzphannn LMFAO!@#$% indeed - sorcery. they will all answer for their sins!

  • Michael's sound lives! Jack is amazing.

  • soung fouo buill-bwao

  • 3:35-3:38 sounds like a bird call

  • how michael's sax blend with pat's guitar synth is just beautiful.

  • A master class by classy masters. Thanks for the music, Mike.

  • Joey is always tasty.

  • Dave Holland! So killin with all types of drummers, I'd love to play a tune with that dude.

  • @Jordainio I agree, but his chemistry with DeJohnette is historic in my opoinion.

  • Monsters!!!

  • Michael come back!

  • Fantastic! Awesome tune and incredible musicianship!

  • Pat's technique is unique, weird some would say incorrect...but yet he stills sounds heavenly...sorry for mu bad english

  • ha! they come back in all messed up after Dejohnettes solo.

  • Jack the ripper!! Frickin' ripping on the drums!

  • <3 awesome!!!!

    Metheney....... not!!! haha

  • How does Pat get the "trumpet/flugelhorn" sound? I've been trying to find a way to get a piano sound. I haven't seen any pedals for it.

  • @MrSerraangel, he uses an old Roland synth guitar, you can find the information online.

  • @MrSerraangel Pat uses the synclavier to get his sound here. Not sure if its just a single pedal though. I think its a an entire rack, but i'm not sure.

  • Whoa a dream setup! Calderazzo is one of the finest pianists ever. (Don't like the synth sound of Pat M. anymore. this band should be 100% acoustic!)

  • @astroforumnl i love this sound

  • What a great version of this tune!!! Brecker makes me sick in the best of ways!

  • I've seen this vid a thousand times. Always concentrating my attention on Brecker. But hear Holland and Calderazzo! What a great team they make! Sensational!

  • in higher notes, like a violin

  • God, the effect sudenly seems like a trumpet! great video

  • I don't mean this in a bad way, but pat metheny's solo is like comic relief after my musical mind was enslaved by brecker's demolition of this song.

  • @i8yokity you know pat wrote this tune right

  • @i8yokity didja know pat wrote this tune?

  • @fabekuso I did not know. Still, brecker owns metheny on this occasion.

  • The cool in this clip is so massive, it makes my head assplode

  • What's that effect on Metheny's guitar?

  • why is the audio so crappy, there is another version of this much better, Michael would not approve

  • Cortenla. Extraordinarios músicos para un gran tema de Pat. Gracias por el video.

  • can some one tell me what brecker is doin at 4.00 ??

  • @Jour0n he's using alternate fingerings to play the same notes twice in a row. the lick is "GGAABBCCDB" in succession.

  • @Jour0n sounds like hes playing notes in the over tone series as a scale if that makes sense?

  • music of the most high...supreme

  • Wow! Pat Metheny has really BIG hair!!!

  • @bananabeam yeah, almost like Mike Brecker :D

  • Guauuuuuuuuuuuuuu. Cita de gigantes, con un temazo de Pat.

  • Pat metheny gets crazy tone on this tune. His guitar sounds way close to a horn.

  • I've seen Calderazzo play at a festival right after he'd released his first cd...."To Know One"....I still think that was his best effort

  • Amazing Brecker. He will live forever on you tube's etc. Enjoy his playing, ideas and virtuosity.

  • fantastic!

  • Don't think Joey is trying to be McCoy Tyner.. Jeez, must we be so analytical??

  • When was this filmed?

  • Didn't believe id live to see metheny loose the "one".. at the head out :-)

  • lul that made me laugh so much!! cheers for pointing out otherwise probably wouldn't have been listening for it!

  • its because he doesnt have a striped shirt jajaja

  • God they mesh so well

You can hear quite a bit of Coltrane during Brecker's solo

  • great to see this - although, despite the fact that his right hand had diminished a bit by the time of the record, McCoy Tyner brought a power and majesty to the studio version that Joey Calderazzo, as good as he is, can't match... wow, Brecker sounds amazing!
