Hi! my name is Erin. I had this surgery almost a year ago:) I had a double curve one at 70 degrees and one a 63 degrees. I was just wondering what her curve was? T2-L1 is a lot! I had T2-L3. This is really inspiring:) How long did her surgery take? Mine was 9 hours but my friend who had it was only 6. I guess it all depends on how many vertebrae you have fused! Good Luck with her dance! Hope you reply! thanks!!!::)))
@ErinlovesUandnails Kendall also had a double curve - her surgery was 7 hours - She is doing amazing today and her dance continues to improve. In 2011, she won the title of Teen Miss Dance of Michigan. This summer she is training in LA. Good Luck to you!
Here's a hooray for no more ugly back brace or pain & a bravissima for Kendall's debut return. I hope she keeps dancing as it's apparent she was born to dance & her body was made for it.
I have scoliosis, and I'm 13. It's very hard to dance how many hours I do, and not have back pain :) Now I know there are other dancers that have the same problems as me :)
@S3Ddancer17 YOu probably think that because she is skinny, but there are many amazing dancers that don't have that body...im real thick and I can dance because I take dance and I work hard. Theres no such thing as a perfect dancer body. You should know considering the fact you must be a dancer
I dont have scoliosis but my cousin did and the process is rough! Glad to see u can still do what u love!!! How did u do at this competition? Can you post more videos? Id love to see the improvement!
@S3Ddancer17 I had a video that I tried to load this summer, but youtube blocked the sound. Hopefully they accept the music she is performing this year! Not too fun to watch a muted video
@gettsmcp I will not say that it is an easy road, but we are very lucky to have such great doctors today. Today, almost 2 years post-op - Kendall is a very happy, healthy teenager - still enjoying dance and no longer seeing Doctors. We are very grateful for her results and want others to know to never give up!
I've been dancing for a couple of years, and dancing is my dream! And I just had a spinal cord injury and I'm so upset that I had to quit dance, but after it's better I will be up and dancing again! Ur great(: keep following ur dreams
@winnerACE1109 Kendall was determined to dance - no matter what the limitations! What was surprising was that yes, there were things that she could not do - BUT, 90% of what she can do, she now does better than ever. One year later, she won Teen Miss Dance of Michigan and she continues to grow in the art!
i got scoliosis surgery but cant do any of this stuff. i think i might have gotten more fuesed or something. i had my whole back fused. how much did she have fused? she is amazing!
@ilovehershy same here i can't do this stuff...and i had my surgery two years ago and i had my whole spine fused...and i am a dancer...i've been dancing since i was 3
@The1qtpie Thank you so much for your concern - As you can imagine, this is a very difficult surgical procedure and condition and did effect Kendall's weight. She was braced 20 hours per day prior to surgery and the surgery was very difficult for her causing her to lose weight on an already thin body. This video was taken roughly 4 months post op - as of now, approx 18 months - Kendall has gained 30 pounds. Her doctors are extremely satisfied with her overall health today.
Loved this. Im 15, with really bad scoliosis and i go in oct to see if i have to have surgery but for right now im wearing a brace. And i want her to know she is an amazing dancer and she needs to stick with it! Ive been dancing since i was 2 and i never spend a day away from my studio lol dancing is everything to me and this gave me hope that i will return after surgery! :) So thanks for this video! Oh and VERY nice pirouettes and leaps!
I had a fusion of T6 to L3 and i know how hard it is to get back to sports after surgery. I Started back swimming after 2 1/2 weeks and went back into my first meet 3 weeks after. Despite not being able to really train, dive and do flip turns I only lost 5 sec and pushed on. I am now able to do dives and flip turns and am beating my old times. Great job Dancing!
aw, shes so inspiring, its 5 months after my surgery and i didnt think i could ever do dance again, i used to be so flexible and i cant barely put my own shoes on without a struggle now! I really want to get back into dancing, does anyone know what the best or the safest dance style would be?
also I'd to say, Kendall is an amazing dancer! shes so beautiful! Im so happy her surgery was a success and nothing held you back! well done :) xx
@szingette try remixing the song a little, add an echo, maybe change the pitch, etc. youtube should treat it as a remix and let you put it up bc it wont sound like the original song.
Thank you, I cried, but good crying, I have to convince my horse riding mad son to have the surgery but he is sure he will never ride again, or at least for a year, if you can dance like an angel after 4 months my son may have hope for his future, XX
@Anome100 Being afraid is expected, but I posted this video to show girls like yourself that this surgery will not stop you from doing what you love (:
hi im 14 years old and have scoliosis too i was petrified i would never be able to dance again because i have been dancing since i was six , i did not have a brace either i had the op when i was about 10 i think my curvature was quite bad to . but around 4- 6 months after the op i was straight back to dance . i also do trapee and acrobatics too , im still worried if i will be acepted into a dance college though ?
@missdancingstar4life No one will judge you based on if you have the surgery or not. I know plenty of girls who have had the surgery who are attending college for dance. Like said in previous comments, this may limit you, but you can work through it!
Oh my goodness I am so happy for Kendall!! I can not believe that she is only 4 months post-op! This seems amazingly surreal to me but it's very inspirational!!! I truly hope that she will always continue to dance and that it does not cause her to be in pain. Thank you so much for posting, this is fabulous!!! :)
@ScolioGirl13 Thank you very much! The next performance that I will perform I will be posting another video to show even more progression. The surgery is a life changer, in so many positive ways!
hi i also had scoliosis surgery (fused in upper lumbar and lower thorasic 6 vertebrae) done in january of 2009 - i'm from new zealand and my surgeon got me from 80+degrees down to 15degrees lumbar and 50degrees to 25 degrees thorasic. I wore a back brace for 3 years which slowed it down until i was ready to face surgery. i hope others read all these positive comments and find the confidence to love who they are, unique spines and all. Thank you for posting this as inspiration for everyone.
@blahblahblahblahbl91 Well, obviously I can't bend metal, but I can work the lumbar region of my back pretty well if I lay flat on my stomach and push my chest up. It hurts a little at first but you will slowly see improvement. As for the back bends.. I'm working on it, it's a goal for me to maybe achieve one day
I also had the scoliosis surgery and i am now dancing more than ever before. Thankyou for posting this and to help others realize that nothing is impossible. thats one of my goals in life now is to inspire others and help them overcome negativity or any doubts.
@xxGretchy17xx Yes! I am also dancing more, and I want those who are going into the surgery to know that they will dance again, and maybe better then they did before.
this made me come to tears. i suffer from moderet scoliosis and can not affored surgery it makes my life as an aspiring dancer so much harder! its great to know that people can suceed as dancers with such a hard handicapped in dancing
I'm a dancer and I just found out I had scoliosis today. After reading countless articles about how dancing would not be an option, my hope was lost. Then I saw this video, and my faith has returned. After seeing how great Kendall has done through her struggles, I refuse to ever stop dancing. Hope will never leave my heart as long as people like you and Kendall are alive. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart.
@mrRicepanda I believe that Scoliosis should never stop a person from dancing.. Many parts of my dancing actually have improved now that my core is aligned. I am much stronger now then when this video was created. Surgery is a rough path, but in the end it was worth it. Best of luck to you!
wow, good on you! I never thought after having surgery that you would be able to dance as well as you did! do you feel like things have improved your dancing, for example has your posture got better etc.? x
@natbagz I do feel like my dancing has gotten better. I feel like before my surgery I was just at a plateau in my dancing and that I wasn't getting anywhere but now I think I am getting better with every class. Now, my posture. I've always had naturally good posture but I feel like it will always remain good now (:
This video was posted to offer inspiration to those families (and children) facing scoliosis surgery. Every parent must find a surgeon in which to place their trust for a successful outcome. Kendall's surgeon, after 3 years of bracing, felt that surgery was the best option. We are very fortunate to live in an era where this procedure has advanced to a point where children can lead normal lives so quickly. My advice to other familes is to research your medical provider.
this is really inspiring. I've had scoliosis my whole life and have had two surgeries. One at 13 and one at 15. I'm 19 now. I was at almost a 90 degree before my first surgery and I'm now at a 60 or 70. They fused my whole spine durring the 2nd one. I've always wanted to learn to dance and I've been doing exercises to help teach myself, but I've always doubted I could because of my back. Thank you so much for giving me hope. =]
