They actually took this idea from a guy that took a toothbrush head, and a vibrating motor from a cell phone to make the first little bug thing. I saw the video on youtube like a few years before these things made their ways into the stores.

This could have been so much more with some simple variations in the shell for each color. Number and angle of legs would change speed and movement pattern, pitch on the motor mount or size of counterweight. Different heights on the peak on the back, different shaped head for "reacting" to obstacles differently... At this scale, even tiny differences would have huge effects.

Maybe the next sets will show more variety.

While this bug does use some of the principles of a "bristlebot", I challenge anyone to create one that exhibits nearly the same characteristics such as it's speed and self-righting capabilities. Or to create your own at the same cost. Most people don't just have spare pager motors lying around.

Not to mention it's overall coolness. There's not much that's cool about a toothbrush head with a battery and motor taped to its back.
