Sure, if you have a tuning fork that's A or D that's fine. But, it's smarter to tune from the G down because you can more accurately Tune the G by ear than low E. It's not that big of a deal, but I find it annoying that everyone starts on the E string.

you can also tune it by using harmonics, i find it easier...... use the harmonit in the 5th fret of the e string and the harmonic of the 7th fret in the a string, it should sound the same, do the same on the rest of the strings
