It's not really an insult, just a faster way of saying somthing went to shit. It's used in different ways. Say for example, you're at a club and are too sloppy, the bartender might "eighty-six" you (refuse service).Or say,the cops sweep a drug operation in a certain club,you could say the cops "eighty-sixed the joint".It's not just gay language. Why would it just be for gays?lol.

It's common across the US, as it originated in the wild west, when drunks would get 86 proof booze.
