I have short fingers & he convinced me that a wider neck is easier to play with short fingers & I spent 2 hrs there & ended up spending over a grand on a Martin that has the widest neck they make.

the martin pictured here, is NOT the unplugged martin you are thinking of. I haven't seen this 53' martin before but i guess its possible it was his based on that picture above. On unplugged, kurt used a Martin D-18E (electric-it had two mounted pickups w/ control pots and a selector switch all from factory) , which is an extremely rare guitar. it was one of the earliest acoustic/electrics made (1959), they only made 301 of them, all right handed.. good luck finding one.

actually after a closer look, it 'is' strung left handed, note the copper wound 'low E, A & D strings are farthest away and the treble strings in the forground.
he only smashed Japanese made jags and mustangs, he would hand over his U.S.A model for the last song so he could smash a Jap model instead. Never saw him smash an acoustic.
My eye sight can't make out how this one is strung, I'll take your word for it.

No this isn't the Unplugged guitar. This one is a regular D-18. Kurt Cobain used a D-18E that was modified with a custom supplementary pickup installed in the resonance cavity. His one wasn't nearly as worn down at the front either and finally it had non-original tuners I believe. I have no info on any other D-18 he might have owned/picked up for a photo shoot.
oh... he must have liked D-18's then, I really thought he only had one acoustic and sound hole pick ups are removable. Either way I'd love to spend a few hours playing it.
sorry, your right. the unplugged guitar had a bridge 'and' a neck pick up installed, no sound hole pick up. strange set up, ive have seen it done before, but its far from ideal to have pick ups outside the sound box on an acoustic.

My opinion on Kurt Cobain? He was a music legend. His voice has a gravelly rawness to it that many try to imitate but none really have what he had. Kurt Cobain played a late 50's RIGHT HANDED Martin D-18E acoustic flipped around to play left handed. The D-18E is extremely rare, less than 400 made. I doubt they could even find a D-18E to say it was Kurts. Plus Kurts was modifed with a Bartolini 3AV pickup that was added to the top.

My opinion on Kurt Cobain? He was a music legend. His voice has a gravelly rawness to it that many try to imitate but none really have what he had. He was incredibly creative and his lyrics are just tremendous. It was obvious he was a little "Fucked up" for lack of a better term, but it doesn't mean he is a loser. RIP Kurt.

It is right handed, but if you know Kurt, his Martin guitar was right handed but re-strung so it can be played Left Handed, take a look at Nirvana's Unplugged concert, Kurt plays a right handed guitar, but re-strung so he can play it.

Maybe this is the one he was once quoted in an interview as saying he kept in his bathroom. Maybe it's just a guitar he had lying around that was donated. Kurt Cobain played a late 50's RIGHT HANDED Martin D-18E acoustic flipped around to play left handed. The D-18E is extremely rare, less than 400 made. I doubt they could even find a D-18E to say it was Kurts. Plus Kurts was modifed with a Bartolini 3AV pickup that was added to the top.

the only martins documented he had was this one..Just a picture of him playing it. he ended up giving it to another musician. It was auctioned off twice. first time didn't meet the reserve than 2nd time i think it sold for 50-60K. A Martin d-18e he used on MTV unplugged in 93
