  • My favourite song of his.

  • Excellent entertainer, Mr. Rafferty, thank you for bringing us your music and RIP my friend, I felt I knew you through your music.

  • boy does this song bring back memories. Sitting in my first condo that I bought out of college, no furniture but a couch and a record player, playing this over and over. I remember the cover art for his albums was fantastic, unlike anything else out there. I remember being fascinated by the names of the musicians; very Scottish names like Liam Genocky, thats a name you do NOT hear in California! Thirty years on, that name sticks with me!

  • Thank you for giving us lots of joy through years of our life. RIP Gerry

  • Loved his voice, and this is my favorite song by him. It just soars.

May Gerry be home and dry.

  • Rest easy, Gerry! You brought us so much! Your music will live on. Right down the line!

  • What a soothing tranquil song this is! Just makes you feel like your 'e "soaring" then finding your way back home.Great driving tune. Thanks Gerry for this wonderful gift.

  • Love the way he hums with the right flat notes. Pure magic.

  • One of his best

  • One of the best pop artists produced by Scotland (or at least born there), without a doubt. Who's on that list? Lonnie Donegan, Jack Bruce, Donovan, Al Stewart, Ian Anderson, Brian Connolly, Bon Scott and Angus Young, Mark Knopfler, Annie Lennox, Jim Kerr, David Byrne...I'd throw in Rafferty's friend Billy Connolly, a legend in his own right.

  • love this song

  • I loved gerry's music for years. Me and a pilot friend of mine would refer to this song after a day or night of bad weather while flying. HOME AND DRY was a good thing!! RIP Gerry, the world will miss you my friend. In this age of pop rock and people singing songs they could not even begin to write, you were the real deal!!!!

  • gerry was my lifelong compagnon, too sad he died. good luck to gerry's family and friends. after kennedy, the dead of gerry has been most sad

  • I used to sit outside my sister's bedroom door listening to Gerry Rafferty a great artist and a beautiful song ....singing of wanting to be with a loved one, planes are good for connecting people but there's just too many needless flights! polluting the air :( ... and those death planes that spread chemtrails!!! nuff said!

  • I remember Gerry very well from my high school days - I graduated in '79. I lived in Alaska then and I remember hearing him on the radio all the time! I have this song on a 45 RPM! Thanks or posting!

  • Nice post Hodgepig007 ! I grew up listenin' to gerry and remember belting across the nullabor with the whole family in 1980, listen to gerry pour his hart out through the Clarions! I'll tell you, it etched into my brain at that point and hasn't yet left.

someone one'l probably down load it from my DNA in 1200 years from now!

    RIP gerry.

  • The centerpiece of the Byrne covered, 10-song LP C2C--the song that defines Gerry and exemplifies his goodness, his vice (alcohol) and his rock sensibility--is Home And Dry. "This silver bird takes me, cross the sky, just one more hour and I'll be, home and dry." Absolute power. Absolute purity. "Gotta see you. Gotta be with you." Home And Dry is a sparkling example of Gerry's forte: depth of lyric. The album's pinnacle track, Home And Dry, captures the essence of the man, Gerry Rafferty.

  • Great. - Erkele

  • Lovely chorus.

  • Ahh....lovely chorus.

  • I loved everything he did......gutted he's gone. A very talented man. RIP Gerry.....:(

  • Bet you there'll be a covers album by the great & good of current singer-songwriters to cash in on GR's passing: just to show what we lost when he drifted away

  • Forgot this song... until I heard a rerun of 1979's American Top 40 with Casey Kasem (MY MAN!!) Also forgot how tender, smooth and light it was. Thank you for posting and your kind words for Gerry's life on your intro... ;^)

  • @bumblebeebattv How funny, that's when I heard it too! I had to look it up.

  • God, he was brilliant, but terribly underrated.

  • His musis is timeless,it never gets old

  • another gem from the master

  • Slante mhath, Gerry - and thanks one more time for this magnificent song, as well as "Baker Street" - rest a spell now that you're home and dry.....

  • The hardest Gerry Rafferty cd to get hold of is Snakes and Ladders. There are plenty of L.Ps around but no cds. Night Owl is availible but pretty expensive.

  • Gerry is now home and dry. God rest you, Gerry with His musical angels.

  • Gerry, you will allway's live on... go for it....

  • I have downloaded all of his available music from iTunes, as soon as I came upon Stealer'sWheel video here. Gerry is a master at creating these silky harmonies and luminous arrangements. So sorry he had to die so early.

  • gerry rocks so unappreciated for so long. God rest his soul and lest we rock n rollers get it right next time. we love you gerry

  • This song is amazing....even better and more uplifting than Baker Street ! Thanks so much....why can't anybody make good music like that today ???

  • thank you Gerry, made my life better:)

  • R I P dear old friend . . . .

  • Thanks for the music "Gerry it will live for ever.

  • thanks for the music "Gerry.

  • You can buy it from amazon or any established music shop. If not in stock..they will order it for you

  • Heard this song one night on cable radio a few years back, and had to buy it right away. The guitar solo is transcendent--one of my favorites ever, and that's saying something. Thanks for posting!

  • I remember back in 78 I was 12. I heard Gerry's music for the first time. What memories! Thank you sir for the wonderful music you made! May the Lord welcome you home!

  • Thank you Hodgepig007 for these great posts.

Are there any other LIVE recordings that you know of?

    He was AMAZING!

  • @ConciergeCoaches The Live recording on youtube (the only one anywhere) is from the hodgepig personal collection as Gerry never released a live album - one concert was recorded & played on BBC radio Scotland in 93.

Hodgepig has 3 full perfomances from the last short tour

  • I had this 8 track when I was kid...this and Buck Owens Live at Carneige Hall....holy smokes I played them til they wouldn't play anymore then I bought them on CD. Rest in Peace Sir, you made a young teenager in NC feel alot better!

  • @Saygrace67 do yourself a favor and download this album. It could possibly be one of the best ever recorded, period devoid of genre.

  • More than sad, it's also so annoyingly stupid that geniuses of music have to die before becoming truly revered and appreciated. No disrespect intended to those other dead geniuses George and John, but Gerry should have been bigger than the Beatles.

  • Another amazing tune by one of the best...ever!

  • Veramente un Grande!

  • amazing song! amazing songwriter! after reading all these comments, I miss him even more! go check out a new version of "the Ark" someone posted. (a play on the old "Cosmos" series) Watch and listen and, try NOT to cry. it won't be easy. R.I.P. Gerry.

  • I'm fucking sad. R.I.P.

  • RIP Gerry.. Your legend will live on...

  • who can dispute his lyrics may be the most timely and well arranged songs for an era??

everything before and since pales. i feel the pain of his personal life. bless the fans!!

let's really hear an outpouring for our now missing genius! !! !!! rock this song all over youtube. til we are all HOME and DRY!! i hitchhiked around usa to gerry and lived my years after by his guidance. 1978 gerry. way to change my life!!

  • Timeless music this is period.

  • I was in 8th grade when this song came out ...i will always love his music...helped me through a lot of tough times.

  • @mondecello Same here.....brings back memories of Junior High School and all that entails. The whole CITY TO CITY album was great. Sad to hear of his passing.

  • I feel soo sad. One of the geatest has left us. But we´ll have his music and beauty of his voice forever. R.I.P ... As long as I´ve got your love, you know that I never leave ...

  • I'm sad, very sad. I remember the face of the chilld in "Can I have my money back" . Rest in peace, my friend.

  • Rest in peace Bro!!!

  • He Was The Best . His Words Were Insperational . F*** the Press Talking About His Booze Problem.

  • @mtmover amen with the press pressin the hard eight on our dear sweet Gerry, the very nerve!!!!

  • Gerry Rafferty - RIP.

  • what awesome memories - thanks to you Gerry - you were too beautiful for this world and we never appreciated your talent enough

silver bird brings back great memories of my days flying for American Airlines

  • Rest in Peace Gerry. You really made some wonderful music.

  • Thank You Gerry for not only this great underrated song, but also for the songs, "Baker Street" & "Right Down The Line". You've made it home now, and I hope your dry!

  • RIP Gerry, your music will always be part of my childhood.

  • RIP Gerry, thanks for the memories.

  • Wow. "This silver bird takes me 'cross the sky..." takes me back to my high school days working @ American Airlines BTR '78... this song was one of few shaping my lifelong outlook about relationships... i.e., optimism & romantic aspiration instead of cynicism & suspicion (contrast this to Elvis' "Suspicious Minds"). Whatever. Nevermind my pontification! lol... Nonetheless, I HATE that we lose some of the greatest musicians to drugs & alcohol (losses skewed > general population).

  • RIP Gerry.....

  • God Bless Gerry my dear friend & musical lifelong companion - the world will not be the same for me now but your legacy will live forever - Peace Gerry,At last

  • @hodgepig007

City to City has been a mainstay in my life. When I came home today to find that Mr. Rafferty had passed away, it genuinely effected me. A rather dispassionate way of saying that I cried.

Luckily we will always have his music...

  • @hodgepig007 Yah man he was great,,when i was about 10yrs old i heard baker street,,and ever since been hooked,,man he was great,,R.I.P Gerry,,you were the best..PEACE......

  • @hodgepig007

I LOVED him from when I first heard his stuff-I was a little kid then (am 44 now) and he never lost his magic for me...you were lucky to know this awesome talented man. Bless him indeed!

  • @hodgepig007 Thanks so much for ALL your posts of Gerry's songs on youtube. I've loved re discovering all those songs- many of which I'd not heard in YEARS. Fantastic. So many memories.x

  • Baker Street is permanently on my favorites list, and he wrote many great songs. Such an underrated musician. RIP Gerry, you made the world a brighter place!

  • ...

Since you are then God's masterpiece, and so

    His factor for our loves, do as you do ;

Make your return home gracious, and bestow

This life on that ; so make one life of two.

For, so God help me, I would not miss you there,

For all the good which you can do me here.

    John Donne

  • Rest in Peace Gerry. You will be well missed.

  • may Gerry rest in Peace now.

  • R.I.P Mr Rafferty

  • RIP Gerry

We'll miss you and your wonderfull music

  • as always. lightyears ahead of most. Listen tot he fantastic lyrics and the amazingly cool music... then he combines the two, you get razzle dazzle.

  • The Master!

  • one of my favorites from that album. this is so cool! from the master, gerry rafferty! thank you! :0)

  • First heard the HUMBLEBUMS in the Burnside Hotel Rutherglen Glasgow - probably 1968 or 1969. Bloody hell "her father didn't like me anyway" "shoeshine boy" - c'mon what more do you want? OK you just got it "home and dry". Gerry Rafferty and Billy Connolly an implausible combinations, but two geniuses in their own right. Well done guys. Billy are you still playing the ROCKFIELD on Sunday nights in Paisley?

    All The Best

  • Definately my favorite Gerry Rafferty song. A very underrated performer. People forget that Stealers Wheel would be dull without his vocals on Stuck In The Middle With You and Star.

  • remeber this when I was a lone soldier in Korea in 1978. the song kept me going in so many ways.

  • @foneBro kind of coincidence I guess...but..hubby was in Korea ..70's...this song kept going thru my mind at the time. Ahhh...NOW...it kindda brings back my youth..lol

  • Love Gerry Rafferty's music, brilliant musician, awesome voice. So sad to read that Gerry has not had the best of health recently. Get well soon...

  • Heard this song on a classic rock station today, and had completely forgotten about it! EXCELLENT SONG!!!! Much better than todays garbage!

  • A great musician ,song writter.

  • please help.can any one tell me where i can buy the album snakes and ladders

  • @millraxx- try Amazon or Ebay - they come up quite often but some are hard to get such as Sleepwalking & Nightowel, or download from itunes (if poss)

  • @millraxx

snakes and ladders ,great album !

  • Still fresh!

  • @ george59renz I've been listening to Gerry since day one. City to City was not his first material. It was good, but look back to 1972, this guy has been good from way one. I love "Stealers Wheel" much more than his solo work, although, all of his material is as good as the next. An amazing artist.

  • Just love those chord changes!

  • hey youre right--someone introduced me to Gerry's music recently, Ive been listening to his songs on here and he really is great, thanks for posting :-)

  • "City to City" to this day remains one of my favorite albums of all time :)

  • Classic ..

Gerry. Happy St Pat's to ya.

  • My favorite Gerry song. I used to sneak a listen to this album when my dad wasn't home (being 6, I wasn't allowed to touch the hi-fi).

  • TUNE!

  • I was affectionado of the baker street album. Stil remains un-olded true and fresh.ANYWAY...WHO wants to force LIFE is doomed to hell anyway..NOW...comes a time..SO WHAT?!

  • Not forgotten by me! Thanks for sharing this song

  • He's not forgotten by me, hodgepig. Baker Street is one of the greatest songs of the rock era. And I love this song. It's marvelous. Thanks for posting.

  • I didn't miss his talent hodgepig007 but sure wish I could find more songs by him. A old girlfriend turned me on to him way back in 1977 with city to city and i've craved him ever since. Thanks for the post and by the way I agree everybody else missed him. God blees Gerry Rafferty

  • he got it right.he transforms whats in his head and produces a unique sound all his own that translates feelings that make one want to listen over and over.just all the right elements have come together, never before and never again.lets appreciate how special this really is.

  • I had always thought he was saying "Warm and Dry" yet I stand corrected since 2008.

  • I was probably remembering the years 1978 through 1980 and afterward when I heard Gerry's songs on the radio the most.

  • I also want to dedicate this song to my girlfriend Ursula, and also the song Blue Monday to her.

  • I wish to dedicate this song to my late friend Scott, 43, a D.J./business owner (The Sound Connection, City Lights Night Club) here in Cheyenne, Wyoming, who we lost suddenly on January 22 to an unknown cause of death. He was a great guy. Scott, this is the song I was talking about. And thanks for playing all of those other requests too, like Blue Monday!!!

  • This is my favorite Gerry Rafferty song!!! I heard it during the hot summers of 1978 and 1979 visiting my Dad in my native Denver, Colorado. It reminds me of the warm dry Colorado sun shining and sparkling off of car windows and the clear blue skies of those summers.

  • does this guy not have any live performances caught on tape?

  • search under Baker St Live and you'll find a version recorded in Hamburg in 1993 that I've posted..........

  • this yank has always feen a GR fan!

  • Ironic for me when I heard this for the first time I had come in from being out in the snow. Wet jeans shoes and socks. Got dried out and changed-Home And Dry.

This was in 8th grade in Millington, Tenn. 30 years, where have they gone, sheesh.

  • cool story!!! ;) i remember this song well! i was also in 8th grade! :)

  • NOR ME!! :-(

  • He isn't forgotten by me! And never will be!

This man's music is the very epitome of atmosphere! It's not only good to listen to, it's good to relax to! He's a musician, songwriter, poet, and artist all rolled into one! One of the most talented individuals in the business! Superb!

  • What a voice! He will always be one of my alltime favorites! May he live long & continue to prosper!

  • This was my favorite song by Gerry Rafferty 1979....Was 18 and in my last year of High school, Apple Valley,Minnesota.

Thank you Gerry for the great song that brings back so many memories.

    Chris Eagan,Minnesota

  • I really love the cymbles throughout the song....

  • I always imagined a tornado touching down and moving accross the landscape when i would here this song. In the beginning its as if the tornado touches down and gains momentum....and as the song goes on, its moving accross the land reeking havock!!

    Chris

  • I agree with the other textmessager that said it esentially doesn't matter the ethnic background, Gerry is bar-none one of the greatest singer-songwriter of all times. This is a kind-of "forgotten" work of his- but it is definately one of his best. Thank you Gerry and "Hedgehog" for posting his work on Youtube. Mike in Fresno, Ca.

  • Gerry is an excellent writer and he had one hell of a band to help convey his songs.

Any time I hear one of his tunes it puts me right back at 19 years old.

  • this is a very good song as well, this is as good has baker street or if not better

  • This first time I heard this I actually thought it was Tom Petty. Great to finally identify the real artist.

  • This song reminds me the days of walking in the "grove" in the late 70s, when attending U of Miami. What a great tune by Gerry Rafferty!

  • This reminds me of High School.

    Sooo 70s and Soooooooo cool!

  • I saw him in New Brighton fishing last sunday, never caught owt

  • man i am envious. i have always wanted to shake his hand, and thank him for all these good songs.

  • Don't know where you get the Irish bit from.He was born and bred in Paisley.

  • Comment removed

  • Wiki says his mum was Scottish and dad Irish. Does it matter? Both Celts anyway. Great 'combination' in my opinion. That's where his 'soul' come from surely.

  • exactly, it does not matter. its not like being a scott or part irish made him a better song writer/performer. that came up from within his own personage. and before you hate me for that comment, i'm a blonde californian of viking blood. i don't really care where gerry came from heritage wise. in my book he's in the all time top 10 song writers of all times. and taht's all that matters (the musical gift he gave us all).

  • We all have a little Gerry Rafferty in all of us. Thats is.... if you Irish.

  • 1st time i heard this. Great song. Loved it thanks for posting it.

  • Have all his stuff and love every minute of it. This song brings back such happy and sad memories of my late teens.

  • is old video but is this cool?

    medium

    BUTTT

    i love english music!!

  • cheers for uploading. yeah, I wore out my vinyl of CITY TO CITY in 1979-80. A pure album treasure for my younger days.

  • His stuff is so good I actually listen to the whole song before going to another.

  • Remember the Humblebums - Tam Harvey, Billy Connelly and later Gerry. As a Dundonian I agree with your "Another little piece of genius from the unheralded Gerry Rafferty"

  • This is without a classic and a masterpiece by Gerry Rafferty.I have fond memories of this song when I first decided to travel out of state to visit school friends.A masterpiece indeed from that decade.

  • without a doubt, the best cut from the "city to city" album.

  • grea song thanks 4 posting

  • Yes. Gerry Rafferty February 1979.

I remember this song playing during the last Total Solar Eclipse in the U.S. on February 26th,1979 until August 21st,2017.

  • A very underrated song from the 70's. My personal Gerry Rafferty favorite. Thank you for posting this great song.

  • Gerry Rafferty isnt forgotten - and never will be!

  • @robcmoseley

May he RIP finally delivered from his personal demons

  • A great pictorial compilation of the track! A great song by a GREAT Artist. Thank you for posting this!

  • One of the best cuts from City to City.

    Thanks for posting this!

    vch

  • Excellence, without a doubt. Much gratitude for posting this. :)

  • My favorite Gerry Rafferty tune

  • GREAT TRACK!!!

  • One of my Top 100 all-time favorite songs and a worthy follow-up to the mighty "Baker Street" (well, once "Right Down The Line" charted); I love how the bluegrass guitar is sooooo understated - would argue that another Scot contemporary of Gerry's who enjoyed his greatest success at about the same time, Al Stewart, is right up there, too - to say nothing of Ian Anderson (and, being a Marillion fan, Derek Dick:)

  • riffraffion. Gerry's been quietly recording up to just a couple years ago. Have you heard Another World? It's a great collection. Get it if you can. Try e-Bay.

    Hodgepiggy...good video! Raffey.

  • Thanks for adding this. i have been searching for so long. What has happened to gerry rafferty? i haven't heard of him in years.
