As someone said below, unsurpassable. No-one comes close... that voice... the guitar... nearly 30 years for me now & still gives me the shivers... no musician has brought me to tears of joy but this man.
I've loved this song by Dick for years and years. Never thought of the Vincent theory, but now that you have mentioned it, the reference is there. Attended a Thompson concert at Portsmouth recently and he did a tremendous version of Vincent Black Lightening (and dog eat dog in denmark hahahha)- what a show!
This song opened up the world to me as a 10 year old rural midwestern kid. I can trace everything that has happened since back to 1989 and Bob Blackman's show on our local public radio station. Thanks Dick, for speaking and playing the truth and thanks to@76AMD for posting a great tune.
One of the great Celtic singers, He seems to be a bit of a rebel,[not a bad thing to be]Almost all he sings about seems to give a message, good stuff.
The daughter refuses to marry the man her father wishes her to marry because she is already in love with another, and takes to her sick-bed to die rather than fulfill her faither's wishes!
Pure class, old songs given new life by new versions now gettin' old themselves, but they'lll live forever....I like the Vincent Black Lighting theory (brilliant as well) — but I doubt it!
You may well be onto something there. Have you listened to Jim Malcolm's version of this? He does it with a strangely engaging, sort of cantering rhythym. It sounds almost "courtly" for want of a better desciption. Maybe a "Highland/Hieland" as we call it here?
Just wondering if you could identify or knew it, or what you make of it? It's here on Ytube
This man is so amazing! One of my all time heroes! Great song!

@pekoe67, I don't think it;s a crackpot theory at all, the songs are cut from the same cloth. Next time I see Dick I will ask him.

Not original, but classic nonetheless!

@DonegalRaymie201 ....and not only that, she and her priest emotionally blackmail the guy into wanting to marry her!

My crackpot theory: 'Vincent Black Lightning' is Richard's Thompson's response to this

mightn't be wrong actually...

Christ, I finally get what you mean! Like this was Thompson's inspiration, in both the ballad story & guitar technique style?
Thompson must have been a fan of Gaughan it seems!

@pekoe67 I Don't think this is such crazy idea; there's a certain odd similarity, a little hard to put one's finger on.

@pekoe67 Don't forget that Dick actually recorded Vincent Black Lightning on Sail On!
