i think the only reason they scraped the big boys is because they derailed and because it was so long ago they had nothin to lift them with so they scraped them
wow i double headed big boy, christ that would of had some puff in it, if only they ran a big boy today. i no all it is is a big slab of metal but she had some history in it and they should keep them running. i get upset because they dont run these.
bigboys had a powered stoker to feed the firebox.. no man could feed the firebox as fast as the engine burned coal...as impressive as this video is...steve lee who is in charge of the union pacific steam program...never expects to see a bigboy run again...too much expense...and logistics problems...the videos will have to do...
Thank you very much for the nice collection. I think the people from schenectedy who built these would be amazed that here in this future we still marvel at these.
The image at 3:38 is astonoshing to me. Is that one of the Frank Delano pics? I'd really love it in my office!
Gorgeous monsters of forged steel! My dad used to work on the Pennsy railroad, later Penn central and then, Amtrak.

The Big Boys were not the largest locomotives manufactured in the United States - the Allegheny class steam locomotives outclass the Big Boys in weight, width, and horsepower. The only dimension the Big Boy's surpassed them on was length.
Big Boy 6000 horse power double header 12000 Hp I can't believe the disels now pull more cars?If they do i don't want to be told about Big Boy is my king and going to stay the king of rails...
Awesome!!!!! I've always been a fan of steamers. But look at that thick, black cloud of smoke, it makes a shadow darker than night itself. Than a large electrical storm overhead. Pollution is a big thing now, and still I would like to see one of those babies in real life.
Awesome!!!!! I've always been a fan of steamers. But look at that thick, black smoke. It makes a shadow darker than night itself, steamers were very pollutive. But still I'de love to see one in real life...
I don't know much about this but i have a passion for all steam engines ect. Is this 'big boy' still around? if so where is it? how old is it? reply back, thanks.
Este tren llamado Big Boy parece tener vida cuando sus ruedas se mueven y su vapor llena el ambiente. Me imagino cuán bueno, capaz y fuerte pudo ser y cuantas toneladas acarreó.
All I can say is WOW.I have loved the trains all my life. One of my favs is the SP 4449, now I have to add the Big Boys to my list.I live just outside of Chattanooga Tn and ride the TVRM every year.I wish we had one of these BIG BOYS here.
Amazing machine, lots of history, i think that some countries - elsepcially those one where electrification of rails is complicated and expensive (usa, russia, china, india) would use steam locomotives again
Never gonna happen !! Russia went Diesel & electric years ago , India & China are in the process of. Steam is just way inefficient , 4-6% !! Just too expensive in both fuel and labour intensity.
There is a front cab model Big Boy in the museum in Sac. Calif. The info placard says the front cab model was made for the runs that had long tunnels. The cab and crew had to be in front to keep from being overcome by fumes. It also stated the western engines were oil fired due to a lac of coal out west. There is also a big boy in a park in Cheyenne Wyoming.
what a great video!!i took my daughter down to the tracks this morning to watch #844??U.P.she is three and thought it was awsome.i have never seen one run.we chased it for 20 miles.can you still see a big boy run,or are they all in moth balls.i would go anywhere in the country to see one.
From a cold start (no steam in the bioler whatsoever) it can, and should take about a whole day (and night!!) to properly bring a big engine's bioler up to operating pressure.
Wonder how many drawbars got pulled out and knuckles broken... seems silly to place so much horsepower in one place- better two locomotives, one at the front and one in the middle.
They didn't have Multiple Unit Control or radio communication between locos in the days of Steam Locomotives. If you were running two locos you stuck them at the head of the train unless the second loco was banking and needed to be cutoff the train. The Big Boy was effectively two locos sharing the same articulated chasis...surely more cost effective than running two locomotives with two crews.
I like the big boy, but it looks so mean. I am sure in person its better looking, beside, it was not ment to look pretty, it was ment haul massive amounts of freight. Anyone know how much coal it took to fire up those giants?
the 611 is not rusting away..it is preserved very well...along with 1218...there maybe a time when either or both of these locomotives will run again...just wait and hope...i visit the museum every year...the engines are kept in great shape...
You know, I had no idea the 611 and the 1218 weren't still actively running until I checked that out! I rode behind the 1218 when I was a kid in the 80's. I'm sure they'll run them again, it's only a matter of time and available funds.
UP won the publicity battle for "Biggest Locomotive" but the Virginian Railway ran a fleet of 10 mighty 2-10-10-2's from 1918 until the 1940's. These brutes had a boiler almost 10' in diameter and low pressure cylinders 4' in diameter. Tractive effort, working simple, was 176,600 pounds. And don't forget the experimental 2-8-8-8-4 and the Erie's three 2-8-8-8-2's
The Big Boy is arguably NOT the largest reciprocating steam locomotive... It's the longest, but it's not the heaviest, or the most powerful. The heaviest is another articulated, the C&O / Virginian Allegheny type 2-6-6-6. You can see one in the middle of a mall in Virginia. It is also awesome.
There are only 2 left in the world, 1 in the B&O museum in Baltimore, It was moved inside a few years ago and the other in in the Ford museum in MI, That is the best preserverd,. it was opertated to the museum shut- down pulled inside and been there ever since. I think there are Approx 10 of the Big Boys still on display which is neat since they only built 25
I had a thing for trains all me life. I moved here about the time they stopped the yearly run of the old 611. Now it sits at the transportation museum rusting with the other trains. Our cooked city will donate 3 million dollars to a art museum but won't give the struggling transportation museum one dime. They have a very small staff and couldn't even afford to fix their heat this winter.
Let's not worry about efficiency- leave that to the Bunny-Huggers and rejoice that there was someone crazy enough to design and build the beast- there was a war on.
May sound crazy but Union Pacific has to bring one back and put it on excersion duty like the Challenger. That would be GREAT to see one at a grade crossing going past at speed!!
This was my first fave on youtube. I love it! Also i know the first picture is challenger 3985, but what is the one at 4:54? Is it a mallet? Or an allegheny?
Too bad the old Great Northern etal electrification wasn't retained. No romance whatever to electrics but they're by far the most efficient, reliable and cost effective (once the horrendous electrification 1st cost is paid back) way to run a railroad.
They were something. I have a video (old movie actually, formatted to video) of a Big Boy(s?) running, and specifically showing the articulation of the engines as they negotiate a crossover switch. I'll have to see if I can find it and figure out how to post it.
Those old steamers were beautiful. But the maintenance! And the lousy efficiency. They were fuel hogs.
Like I say, I'll have to find it when I get back. I work on ships and am usually gone for a few months at a time. I think I bought the video from a 'Trains' ad or some such, quite awhile ago.

I wonder how long a full head of steam pressure would take from a cold firebox?
TECHKLEC 4 years ago
An average size locomotive took 3 or 4 hours to steam up. So, A BigBoy, should take approximativly between 5 and 7 hours.
It was probably a huge task to build the coal fire into a 150 square feets firebox !
I Wonder if the were starting the fire with a conventionnal wood fire ?

actually until very recently, three or four diesels were needed to pull a train that could have been pulled by a single Big boy
they were designed to pull 5 mile trains up the Wasatch mountains in Utah
but they did require alot of maintance and frequent water stops
but if the 3985 manages, someone with some money should step forward and at least take steps to preserve a bigboy
