July/2011. Happy Birthday to the man that started it all. Many happy returns of the day Bill Haley. "Shake Rattle and Roll", became the first international rock and roll hit in 1954 reached #7 on Billboard.
STAGE SHOW" featured the Dorsey Brothers {Tommy & Jimmy}, their orchestra, and guest stars. It was produced by Jackie Gleason, who used the show as a "companion" with his filmed version of "THE HONEYMOONERS" on Saturday nights during the 1955-'56 season. Because "THE PERRY COMO SHOW" was getting better ratings opposite them on NBC, Gleason tried to book a "unique" singer for "STAGE SHOW"- he found him in Elvis. When "The $99,000 Answer" aired on "THE HONEYMOONERS", this was on before it.
Both Bill Haley and Joe Turner´s versions are best than this one. Elvis is the "King of Cover Versions". That´s why Elvis doesn´t deserve to be called "The King".
Look at that shit, as simple as it gets, yet he blows every rock band, every performer that ever existed out of the water. Just pure raw talent, stripped down, exposing all it's purity like a diamond in the dirt. Nothing will ever beat talent no matter how much money is thrown around a performer. Lady Ga Ga, Kanye, Madonna, they can spend all the money they want on their videos, their live shows, but in the end it doesn't hide the fact that they're a bunch of talentless overrated fucks.
@JamesTKirkCobain heyy..You are soo right. This is what I saw on tv in Canada...I was 13 years old. Am still a fan to this day and so are many of my friends. And I have made sure that all 7 of my grandsons know about Elvis. Right on....
The 1950s Elvis was the original and the best. Raw, pure, everything parents hated, kids loved, and the Beatles wanted to be. His voice was so much better when he was younger too. The 1970s Elvis could have been confused at times with Vegas lounge singer Deney Tormele lol!
You know every new singer or performer or musician that comes out today, I just know without a doubt they are going to suck. It never fails. They either sound like someone else, or they sing like everyone else, or their songs are ordinary sounding. But can you imagine to see Elvis for the first time back THEN? It must have been just beyond the beyond in mind blowing when you consider the fact that rock and roll was as new as he was.
It's interesting that this TV appearance was on Jan. 28/56. Elvis was signed to RCA Victor but no record was out yet. Only Elvis' regional Sun records were released. 'Heartbreak Hotel' was released in Feb.56 and his first album wasn't until Apr.56. 'Don't Be Cruel' and 'Hound Dog' weren't out until July56. Elvis was becoming renouned for his southern stage performances. This is a taste of what they were like only restricted for television.
Absolutely Electrifying! These stageshows show Elvis with real and unaltered emotions with catch the viever/listener immediately! (look at the face movements and listen to the crunchy and slurring vibrato sound of his voice!!) Goose bumps EVERY time I watch this. An UNREACHABLE performer of the 50s that noone dares to imitate, unless its been done a thousand times with the late 70s Elvis when he has been a shadow of himself.
I was just 13 in '56 and, as someone posted earlier, it was a wild time in the U.S., what with Elvis and his gyrations and this brand new kind of music. Frankly, it all scared many adults and excited millions of teens with its raw sexuality and freedom. But, while other producers were scrambling to find their own "Elvis," Col. Parker was realizing he had to tone down his boy to keep their 2 careers alive. The after-Army Elvis and his songs were that "cleaned-up," more acceptable act.
You're probably correct ... but what makes you say that? The more "pop"-sounding, tamer songs, or tv's refusal to show him below the waist, or what? Just curious. Thanks.
He was able to rock like very few, he proved that on shows like this. But many of his so-called rock & roll hits were cleaned up. Songs like 'Heartbreak Hotel', 'Teddy Bear', 'Don't Be Cruel', 'All Shook Up' can hardly be labelled as rock & roll, when compared to r&r stuff by the likes of Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis. Let alone the ballads. So, on record, the 'cleaning up' had started way before his army period.
What a difference between 1950's Elvis and the later 1970's Jump suit Elvis. Immitators always act out the Elvis of the 1970's because they know no one could ever match 1950's Elvis!
@osallent actually i know plenty of young elvis tribute artists that do the 50's such as: me(Carli Love), Kavan, Cody Slaughter, Nick Guiterrez, Alex Swindle, Drake Jennings, Victor Trevino Jr, and many many more. look up all of these guys i promise you won't be disappointed.
Elvis 1956! Before he even began singing he looked dangerous...Can't even imagine what adults were thinking when they saw this for the first time? One of the earliest and greatest Rock and Roll moments ever!

If your a true Elvis fan you also love him here and in the 1970's!

The fifties Elvis was fantastic. But don't forget the 1968-1972 Elvis.

I also prefer Elvis from '50s :) His rock'n'roll hits were better back then than his slow love songs from '70s.

I agree with many of you, the PRE Army Elvis was the most raw and natural talent period of his life.
I grew up in that time, and the effect of Elvis, was like a blast of TNT to the world.
My parents were up in arms, NO Elvis RECORDS and NO watching Elvis on TV shows.
We would buy an Elvis 45 record and sneak it to someones home to listen to. We were in shock, nobody was like him.
Elvis,Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard were wild singers on those 1950's records.

the army did this to him. they turned him into something he wasn't- John lennon stated Elvis died in the army is damned true.
The song yesterday is probaly about him and to him the beatles loved him. Elvis was a confused man when his mother was taken away.
The forces of darkness got him I guess.
