timo1595, You are uninformed. USA has huge forests and most are dense. Huertgen Forest is similar in that it is dense and covers low mountainous terrain. Difficult terrain. Deep valleys, very steep slopes and cliffs. Good defensive terrain. Much fog and rain. You have never seen the area nor been there nor fought there. Ardennes is similar etc.
U are right....I was in the forrest...it´s a death forrest...even today u see the foxholes and even ammunition in the woods....huertgen was the biggest mistake....45.000 GI dead ore wounded...oh boy...
@bleushift yes, the battle was intense in many places, but the Schumann Eck/Crossroads, Battle of Wiltz, and the bloody battles that took place at "Wilde Sau" or Wild Hog (i think)...which was a HUGE minefield setup by the German 353 Infanterie Division who were soon replaced by the 275 I.D.
Very stupid attitude. Finns and russians very often used tactic by hitting from forests to defence of enemy. But looks like germans and troops of especially western allies were too scary to go forests. Even today we finns have noticed how much western people are afraid of going to deep forest.
What major war has Finland been involved in? I would not say Finland has a military force of high distinction. Finns spend most of their time trying to stay out of wars and hoping others will fight them for them.
Well Finland has fought in Winter, Continuation and Lapland wars. We also had our civil war. Before our independence we fought for other nations militaries. A long tradition of guerrilla warfare in forests is a staple of the Finnish military to this day.
