Jussi Bjorling is a case of intervention from on high--way high. Even when you listen to him sing as a young child in his family quartet you can hear that magnificent lead voice probably asking: "Is this what you want?" Bet no one knew anything "special" about voice and opera singing so they must have just sat there enthralled by his eagerness to finish every song they requested. I personally don't believe he was from this planet. Or there would be thousands like him.A thousand Jussi's?

This is one of my favorites songs by Björling. The composer is Carl Millöcker, (Vienna, 1842. Baden bei Wien, 1900) and it is taken from an opera called Der Bettelstudent (El estudiante mendigo, The Beggar Student). In german, the aria is named: Ich hab' kein Geld (No tengo plata, I have no money). Thhis opera was so successful, that allowed Millöcker, who had composed many others with no such success, to retire from his job.
