The high note is great BUT the entire piece flows from him with utter ease and eveness which not all other great tenors could command so consistently.
Perhaps he was human after all?! That is not a high C he sings! After high C, comes Cflat. Then High D. Then high Dflat. It's a high Dflat, for christ sake, how many singers - apart from Kraus - can attack this so instantly?
Jussi Bjorling is a case of intervention from on high--way high. Even when you listen to him sing as a young child in his family quartet you can hear that magnificent lead voice probably asking: "Is this what you want?" Bet no one knew anything "special" about voice and opera singing so they must have just sat there enthralled by his eagerness to finish every song they requested. I personally don't believe he was from this planet. Or there would be thousands like him.A thousand Jussi's?
This is one of my favorites songs by Björling. The composer is Carl Millöcker, (Vienna, 1842. Baden bei Wien, 1900) and it is taken from an opera called Der Bettelstudent (El estudiante mendigo, The Beggar Student). In german, the aria is named: Ich hab' kein Geld (No tengo plata, I have no money). Thhis opera was so successful, that allowed Millöcker, who had composed many others with no such success, to retire from his job.
i only wish we (sweden) still had a singer with 1/1000th of his talent still around, this is an AMAZING vocalist, his nessun dorma is the best ever, only paralelled by pavarotti in his prime.
Jussi had such solid musicality and schooling, even the "trumpet blast" high C# is delivered effortlessly and tastefully. What more to say when perfection is accomplished?
Like this if you are swedish =)

@zgopify Ehm, after c comes d flat (or c sharp if you like), you're thinking of d sharp...
pianofan007 1 year ago
@zgopify D-flat is lower than D actually. Flat means lowered.

You're right! That's the most effortless - and prettiest - high C# I ever heard.
But notice the sonorous sound of the
deep notes too!

Delightful! He has a "smile" in his voice as he sings - and I'm smiling as I listen to him,

Humble and wonderful alll the same... Jussi was his name. I doubt there will ever be another singer to his like.

I've never heard before this song, but it's great. Let me recommend you a song of Luis Mariano:Rossignol. That's one of my favourites.

All over Jussi's recordings you here instant attack on high notes. Some vocal preparation here for that last note! Perhaps he was human after all
