I love Portnoy's beefy drum sound on this record. Mangini's drums sound great on the new record, but they make me miss Portnoy's in-your-face style a little bit. Of course it did come at the expense of Myung being a bit buried. Mixing is a very delicate art.

At audition he had no trouble playing exactly Portnoy s parts, too easy for a drummer of his status. Sorry but, DT does this so fucking much. They're extremely talented, but there are countless songs where the intro is fucking great here, but then it gets cheesy/ruined... like when the vocals came in.

Dream Theater's that gateway band you listen to once you've already discovered Rush or Zeplin. While some fans continue to be close minded and listen exclusively to DT, many more move on to the various subgenres of metal. It's like a house, with Rush being the front porch, DT being the landing, the dining room, kitchen, backporch and living room being the various other metal bands that follow.
