See, this is what makes the original Star Wars great. George Lucas isn't given total control of the movie, so an actor, Harrison Ford, improvised a line that fit his character much better than George Lucas's original line.
The curious thing about this scene is that what Han solo says was not written in the script, it was a sentence that Harrison Ford improvised, and was unexpected. It fix so well that Lucas left it like that. What an amazing scene.

And then all the more in 'Return' when Luke and him have there father son chat on Endor......maybe the most underated moment in the original trilogy.

It's a minor thing to the mood of the overall scene, but Han closing his eyes and lifting his head up to the sky as the steam starts popping up was pretty epic. Kershner has slightly misremembered the original line; it was "Just remember that, Leia, because I'll be back"; Lawrence Kasdan, the main writer on the script, was LIVID that so many lines had been changed during shooting (including an entire scene between Han and Leia), but Kershner didn't feel the line worked, so.. "I know."
I remeber being ten and shedding a *few* tears in the theatre after this scene. I'm so glad Lucas re-released these movies and I got to expireince this in the theatre. (with the exception of the "Greedo Shoots First" conspiracy)

@mmmmmvodka He was supposed to say "I love you too." Apparently they tried it and every take it didnt seem right, then Harrison Ford suggested thinking in character that hed say "I know". And voila, one of the best scenes in all of Star Wars. Well thats how I heard it, cant remember where, but it was on a documentary somewhere.

@mmmmmvodka Originally, Han was going to say "I love you" back to Leia, but Harrison Ford and Kershner thought it didn't suit Han's character, so Harrison Ford ad-libbed the line "I know" and they all loved it so much they kept it in.

Kershner has slightly misremembered the original line; it was "Just remember that, Leia, because I'll be back"; Lawrence Kasdan, the main writer on the script, was LIVID that so many lines had been changed during shooting (including an entire scene between Han and Leia), but Kershner didn't feel the line worked, so.. "I know."

I remeber being ten and shedding a *few* tears in the theatre after this scene. I'm so glad Lucas re-released these movies and I got to expireince this in the theatre. (with the exception of the "Greedo Shoots First" conspiracy)
