  • wow she's pretty hot... idk why but women from that era just have this appeal to them

  • Can't believe I am just now hearing about this show, it's funny as hell!

  • I miss this show SO freaking much it makes me wanna cry! I wish I'd lived that period, the 70s... I wish I had seen this live.

  • She was 33 when this episode aired, but could pass for 30. When the series ended, she was 40, but I think she looked older. Job stress, personal life stress, health issues? Don't know. But the show was wonderful and she was great in it (and in the DVD show).

  • @bus114 You try dealing with Lou and Ted for 7 years, and see how old YOU look.

  • They just don't make sitcoms like this anymore...

  • She should have stuck with that wig. She looked 10 years older once she stopped wearing it :/

  • Such a great show, there will never be a show like it again. If it were produced today, every episode would be filled with Mary whoring around, fucking and sucking off every guy AND girl in the office...tv is so fucked up nowadays! There's not one show on tv today with an ounce of class or that can't get its laughs from constant filth...it takes no talent to write that garbage today!

  • Somewhere between 1970 and 2011 Mary began hating spunk herself.

  • 1 person has no 'spunk' and we still love them! -:)

  • The job is associate producer....

  • Mary was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 33. She has lost most of her vision. She was also a heavy smoker and drinker for years.

  • just lovely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • mary was a hottie

  • 2:29 FOR SOME SPUNK

  • It's strange...but that outfit she's wearing is actually back in style!!

  • Classic.

  • Who the frack clicked 'dislike'?

  • @Candiditty Someone dyslectic, I presume.

  • I love how they did this on Hot in Cleveland :D

  • you got spunk..... in your hair...

  • OMG - I was just quoting this the other day and no one knew what the hell the I was talking about!!

  • Classic!!!!!!!

  • Happy Birthday, Ed!

  • Happy 40th Anniversary to the Mary Tyler Moore show! Forty years ago today...Sept 19th, 1970. WOW!!!!

  • Back when alcoholism on sitcoms was hilarious!

  • What a great show, what a great team Mary and Ed...that was an excellent scene...

  • I was born in 1957, which means I was treated to many of the social breakthroughs that have happened over the last fifty-odd years. The Mary Tyler Moore show was surely one of them; it seemed like every intelligent person in TV was trying to push the envelope. Being at the right age at the time was truly a privilege.

  • Spunk where I come from means sperm ...LOL...

  • My old boss, a very sexy, very married Greek woman, kept a bottle of Ouzo in her desk drawer. After a long day she would break it out and pour us both a shot before we went home. I miss that. Thanks fir the classic clip. I miss the old Lou Grant show, too. Did that even make it a full season?

  • you know what?! you got spunk !

    =))

  • HAHAHAHAHA! Still funny even now! That's what makes it a classic!

  • What a well written and well written show.

  • Brilliant! I actually Lol watching this XD

  • wkwkwk first time she got a job with crazy & funny boss. wiuh....high pressure & so nervous. this scene so rare. I love it X))

  • ....and she gets hired on the FIRST interview...and starts TOMORROW...not like now when you have to go through a progression of four meetings to get considered for a second look at contemplating the outside possibility of hiring you. Why do even basic jobs now have such an overwrought vetting process?

That, and Lou unashamedly brings out the bottle and offers to share it not just another guy but Mary! think of a supervisor at any level nowadays who would think of trying to get away with that.

  • @tucsonia Simple, if a big corp. hires a worthless lemon of an employee they can't just fire him/her as in the old days without risking a long expensive legal action, especially if the hiree is a minority.

  • @logancody05 Kind of beside the point I was making. I was talking about the modern hiring process, the front end as opposed to the backend (firing) process, but okay.

  • @tucsonia Perhaps I don't understand your question. I thought you were wondering why the hiring process today is so long and involved. What I'm trying to say is large corps. put in a many layered filtration process to more closely assure they're hiring the right employee. They do this becuse the firing process can be a long and expensive undertaking. I'm thick headed, so I might be missing your point again. Forgive me if that's the case.

  • Could someone explain that Brandy Alexander joke to me?

  • A Brandy Alexander is quite a bit more complicated than just accepting a belt from the bottle Mr. Grant keeps under his desk. It's like pulling out a box of crackers, asking if someone's hungry, and them asking for pot roast.

  • Ah, that explains it. Thanks

  • @backstagebear what is in a brandy alexander?

  • Thanks for posting this one ... I just love her ... and him too! How many reasons can there be? 65! lol

  • Oh man, those boots! So French Connection.

  • Mary looked kind of sexy in that outfit. Nice short sleeve sweater, short skirt and nice white gogo boots. She was kind of sexy during that time in my opinion.

  • from capri pants to the boots she's my dream girl she is BADDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!

  • the Brandy Alexander line still makes me laugh whenever I think of it

  • I modeled myself after Lou. Every time I hire someone, I tell them, "I'll try you out for two weeks. If I don't like you.. I'll fire you! If you don't like me... I'll fire you!"

  • @ukkfayooyay Thats Hillarious!!!! Keeps them back on there heels I'm sure.

  • What happened to all the real men on tv? Lou Grant, Barney Miller, James Evans (the dad on Good Times)... They were hot--and definitely NOT in any way Paris Hilton & co. would see!!!

  • I remember reading about (or hearing on the commentary) that this scene just didn't fall into place during the first go around, and that is was re-shot later to the get the tone just right. Great piece of television. Flawless writing, timing and execution. Completely holds up today. Thanks for the post!

  • Can someone post up the whole episode please?

  • go to hulu it goes up to season 3

  • lol I love this.

    Lou- You got spunk.

    Mary- Oh.

    Lou- I HATE SPUNK!

    lol favorite episode

  • @MsJohannaRoseBarker I HATE SPUNK! one of the best lines on TV of all-time.

  • I can't get over how good she looked when she was young.

  • @OneEyedJack1970

My dad, now 85 years old, *still* watches MTM and DVD reruns just to drool over Mary. When he sees her on something filmed much later, like a Lifetime movie, he gripes "She looks terrible! What happened? She used to be so cute on the Dick Van Dyke Show!" I have to remind him that that was 40 years ago and we're all getting older...

  • @MarnieReeves She did age really fast in the 1980s.

  • SPUNK....BAH HUMBUG

  • All-time classic.......gotta love it!

  • Great clip.

I read a comment from Ed Asner that he knew he had the character of Lou Grant nailed when he uttered that line.

  • This is classic!! Funny even as a stand alone bit. I've been quoting I HATE SPUNK since I first saw this episode. Thank you very much.

  • Haha, i love this! thank you for posting!

  • Love it! You Got Spunk. . . I hate Spunk!

Thank-you for posting. Nice and clear.
