I have the new white unibody macbook. I have no fucking clue what people mean when they say the "glossy plastic" doesnt make any sense. It isnt bad.Its not sticky. The glossy plastic feels nicer than a lot of PC's Ive used.
i went into the apple shop to ask about the infrared port, and one of the workers there told me that you could use the remote app on the iphone 3g instead so i went home to try it out and it works!! ..great video!
OR... if you're a student in higher education, you'll pay ~£35 *LESS* for the entry-level MBP, than you'd pay for the MacBook at normal RRP!. Yeah that's right - you get about 15-16% off, if you're in higher education!. :-)
I think Apple should drop the plastic white Macbook and leave the Macbook Pros. They should take out the "pro", and voila, entirely new line of aluminum unibody Macbooks.
@RawfellCopta I disagree, it's good they have an entry-level macbook for students, otherwise I couldn't have paid for mine and would be stuck with a used mb or else...windows 7
If they do that they won't sell a lot of Macbooks unless they drop the price to $799. They should definitely drop the prices on their notebooks especially the 15 and 17 which is way too high.
I would do a MBA course before making video like this about prices. You still have a lot to learn in business... 100 pounds more meaning you are giving apple more profit, think about it
Replying to what you said about the plastic on the interior (palm rests). I think it's because the old model interior surface absorbed more dirt and this model would be easier to clean. Personally, I like it.
I recently got a 13" MacBook Pro, it is awesome, I didn't how ever get the entry level version. I wanted something small and I needed Firewire for my audio input device. So when Apple announced it was getting Firewire I was jumping around the room punching the air.
I think I may have dozed off during this video at some point, but it is also important to remember that product ranges over have cross over points. Cars is a classic example. Basically Apple know what they are doing.
The Pro has less GB room due to it is not focused on college users like you said but 250GB should be standard. I didn't like the Polycarbonate Macbook because it was plastic and the Pro was more solid. I don't really see the need for the Macbook air it has no superdrive you could get an external one but you will use up a USB port. The macbook and the pro 13' should stay in the line up it is always good to offer your customers variety.
Thanks for posting this. But everyone seems to be confused about the new Unibody MacBook Polycarbonate.
First, in the beginning of the video, you wonder why Apple made the palm rest area glossy and how it will heat up. But you don't know that it will heat up because ASFAK, you have not used one extensively yet. I am sure it won't heat up much at all, especially since plastic does not conduct heat like aluminum does.
But here is is:
THE MACBOOK IS MEANT FOR TEENS, OLDER PEOPLE AND EDUCATION
It has a different target market, and Apple is spot on with it. There is a reason it is glossy plastic, with a plastic screen instead of glass, with rubber on the bottom, etc. It will fair better around children and beginner computer users. Spills from drinks, knocks on the screen, rubber grip on the bottom so it does not slide off surfaces... all geared for non-pro users: for people who don't sit in front of it for 12 hours per day typing and editing for work.
I agree, Apple messed up on changing the aluminium unibody macbook into a macbook pro. Eventually I think there will be another aluminium macbook and they will ditch the polycarbonate.
Hey man, I am a little confused on how you are thinking, they just released 3 new computers, so give it a few more months and you will see the Mac Book Pros and Mac Pros will be updated. Have you thought of that?
One other difference is that the Macbook Pro has glass over the screen, which is extremely scratch resistant when compared to the ordinary Macbook. Great vid Adrian keep it up!
I think what apple should do do differentiate, is bump up the MBP specs, eg the 2.53GHz model should be the base model. Give it 4 GB RAM as standard, retain the £899 price tag.
At the same time, they should freeze the spec of the Macbook as it is now and lower the price, eg £699. That way there's a £200 price difference and a clear difference in specs.
We did see a price increase in the Macbook here in the uk, It was £749 previously i believe.
At today's exchange rate, and including VAT it should still be £749. Personally though, I would have liked to see the Macbook set for £699, as this would position it better for persuading buyers for xmas.
Re: Hard drive, the MB has just been updated but the MBP has not seen an update since the summer. I agree it's silly, they should bump the MBP specs before xmas
If you read my comment correctly it says I would choose the MBP WHEN it has a LARGER hard drive than the MB, which it doesn't have right now (as you have shown).
the only reason it's glossy is because of the dirt on palm rest showing up (i think). I'm not saying it's good or bad, I dislike the macbook. The university I go 2 uses PC which is a dam shame. For the macbook issue i think they call it a pro because it has the pro features but at a smaller screen size hence it being a little more than the white macbook. But, they should've changed the macbook like they did and have the 15 and 17 unibody macbook pro to sep them. so it's weird apple did that.
I see the only solution to be increasing the specs of the MBP line. Noticed that the iMac's specs START at 3.06GHz and thats the absolute max for MBP'S? juts give apple a couple of months
Actually, the marks on the palm rest were a lot more visible when it was matte. The fact that it's glossy now means you can just wipe away the finger prints and grime... not like the old one... :|
i disagree about the aluminum macbook to macbook pro title! it was a great idea! a lot of pro users didnt want the 15" screen and wanted it to be cheaper, but wanted the power of a pro and the aluminum enclosure. there's more options for the consumers now this way by creating the macbook pro family.
i think its def worth paying 100 pounds more.. unless u dont care about the advantages, but there's ALOT of advantages for such a small amount more of money.
I'll tell you exactly why the palm rests are glossy plastic. I owned an white macbook for about a year and took it around with me on trips. Within 8 months, I had rubbed 2 permanent dirt stains where I rested my hands. MANY people I know had this problem and I assume the gloss is there to prevent the problem.
when Apple said they don't offer stripped down products they forgot the macbook for $995 u.s dollars its still very unattractive to me, its looked the same since 2001 since the ibook g3 and no firewire anyone who thinks this looks good needs eyeglasses lol
Firewire is a dieing breed. Most consumer cameras have USB 2.0 and the average consumer who buys a Macbook won't know what firewire is or care about the advantages. It by no means stripped down.
FOR a few bucks more get a pro version if you don't care bout being a pro and don't want the extra bells and whistles get the white macbook good vid 5 stars
I've been wanting to buy a mac for sooo long now, but I can get a computer with more than or equal to the 13" macbook and MBP. I'm a student in high school, I dont wanna be stuck sitting on a desktop (which would be the mac I would have to buy now) forever. I am going to end up buying a 17" core i7 250gb 4gb of ram, and even if I do spend more than 1199, its still gonna be worth the value compared to a macbook.
i think the hdd is only bigger because the macbook is meant fir stupid people that walk into best buy to find a "Cool" cheap laptop with a big hard drive.
To add to the debate, someone I know bought a Mac before the refresh and the real deciding factor was the screen size, I think Apple should just ditch the 13" MacBook Pro, keep the 13" MacBook and the 15" and 17" MacBook Pro's, this would leave a bigger seperation.
To be honest, price and spec wise I would go for the MacBook, but I love the Aluminium body of the MacBook Pro, so that's what I would buy. I do think the MacBook Pro base model should decrease in price, but Apple will never do it, because the price is what seperates the pro line from the rest.
I definitely think that Apple should lower the price of the MacBook. In the US, our MacBook is $200 cheaper at $999, but I think it would be a smarter move for Apple to lower the price at least $100.
Hey I thought you do marketing? If so, you should know their strategy. The 100pounds gap makes huge difference for Apple. If you realize you paid quite a lot for the white macbook and now you are paying 100 pounds more just for a little upgrades which in total don't worth 100 pounds. You are giving Apple bigger profits at the end.
Is like if you are getting the highest end of the new iMac you are giving Apple the biggest profit. Do the calculations yourself. :)
Check out engadgets review of the new MB. After using it for a few hours the plastic around the jacks had dents in them, and the bottom plate had black 'scratches'.
to me these are all obvious updates and you're wrong about a couple of things.
first of all, you talk about the macbook and the baseline macbook pro and that there is a price gap of only 100 pounds. in the Netherlands that price gap is 250 euros, so that is 230 pounds. then it makes a lot more sense to buy a regular macbook.
and that the macbook has a bigger harddrive, of course! this is an update, in the next update of the macbook pro it will probably start with a 250Gb or 320Gb harddrive.
Thanks Adrian, i really love your videos! You are one of the few tech youtubers that really talks in depth about tech stuff and you also put your opinion in.
in the US the price didn't change and the macbook pro is $200 more then the macbook. But I think that theres going to be an update to the macbook pros that way its theres a bigger difference and to update the processor for the more expensive models.
They still make this model because there's still a market for it. It's simple economics. More people will buy this than the Pro dispite the reasonably small price gap. Plus, people love the white model. It's funny reading comments before this happened with people saying they'd be stupid to get rid of it because it's such an iconic model, then when they refresh it they said it's stupid of them to keep it. They can't win, it's Catch 22. If it fails it fails, at least they tried. Let's see eh?
I believe that the screen on the polycarbonate is not as good as on the Pro model.
Here's my take on the price difference. They seem to be applying the same strategy they use with the iPods. For example... the price difference between 8 gb & 16 gb iPod Nano is so small that people think. "I might as well get the 16 gb model".
So the same goes for the MB/MBP. That's my thoughts.
I have a Macbook Pro 13" but refer to it as a MacBook. Apple should've done away with the white one and just kept the MacBook Pro 13" a MacBook in name.
There really is no point in getting the White model! Btw, the trackpad only supports scrolling as a gesture... the Aluminium Macbook's from 2008 supported multi-touch... I'm glad I bought the 13" MacBook (Pro).
The MacBook Pro has 160GB because they were updated back in June when prices for the drives would have been higher than now. That and there's a much bigger variation of models in the Pro line so they need more to distinguish them methinks.
I wonder when the MacBook Pro's are going to be updated and how...I really want to sell my 2.4 Ghz unibody MacBook for a 15 inch but I don't want to be pissed because they add a new feature next year. The current laptop line up is a little weird and that means Apple is going to update them.
macbook should be 700 dollars. Just look at the Dell XPS laptops. Same processor, same memory, plastic body and a real graphics card. I dont see why the macbooks are more money?
I agree entirely with the shift in branding towards the base line MBP. It was better before with the white and black and then a separate line for the pro's. Made sense before.
I think Apple should kill the 13 inch MacBook Pro and have it how it used to be. What used to be good about the MacBook Pro was that the lowest grade model had a good graphics card. Now the 13 inch has rubbish Nvidia graphics. Great video and great to see you back DRBUK!!
a couple of things that you forgot about the new Macbook are, there is no infer-ref port so you can not use the new apple remote with it, and , there is no external battery charge indicator! these are what makes apple, apple ! hope this helps
ahh thanks for the info ! at least on the old macbooks the battery indicator was on the bottom of the macbook...so now it has nothing ? lol bit stupid, all the more support for my view that apple messed up the ideas of the macbook and macbook pro 13" models.
guess what Im gonna do... Im gonna whip my hair back and forth, I whip my hair back and forth

I don't see it really as worth it, but i would not buy a base line macbook pro, i would opt for more ram and a bigger hd

Its funny, a year ago the macbook was aluminum now its crappy plastic again.

I bet this happened because Steve Jobs was away. They probably let there ideas slip.

I think Apple should kill the 13 inch MacBook Pro and have it how it used to be. What used to be good about the MacBook Pro was that the lowest grade model had a good graphics card. Now the 13 inch has rubbish Nvidia graphics. Great video and great to see you back DRBUK!!

was there a keynote by jobs on this?

a couple of things that you forgot about the new Macbook are, there is no infer-ref port so you can not use the new apple remote with it, and , there is no external battery charge indicator! these are what makes apple, apple ! hope this helps
Macintoshblogger 2 years ago
ahh thanks for the info ! at least on the old macbooks the battery indicator was on the bottom of the macbook...so now it has nothing ? lol bit stupid, all the more support for my view that apple messed up the ideas of the macbook and macbook pro 13" models.
