I saw this movie because I love and respect Bryan Singer - talented director. "Valkyrie" was ok but I didn't feel the atmosphere of that period in our history. "Enemy at the Gates" (2001) and "Black Book" (2006) were much better films. I actually enjoyed Tom Cruise's performance but he did not take the lead as strongly as he should have. His non-German accent was not an issue it was the strength that he displayed in his performance that was disappointing to many. The supporting cast was superb
This is a great movie and a wonderful and true tale. The best part is it really happened this way. Imagine the courage. I have known of this man and the others for more than forty years and the story of their honor and bravery cannot be told enough. If I get to Heaven, I for one want to shake their hands. Men ... thanks for at least trying. Your sacrifice is appreciated by some of us.

@bbender1986 actually the Treaty of Versailles caused the rise of Hitler which caused World War II. It took a wheelbarrow full of money in Germany to afford a loaf of bread for a German family. The treaty of Versailles crippled the Germans at the knees and was the true cause of WWII. That should be mentioned in history books, but it isn't, just that Germany had to pay war reparations after WWI. So you are saying the actual cause of WWII shouldn't be taught to American students?

What history books have you been reading? All the Australian ones have a fairly detailed section on the origins of the second world war, including the great depression and the treaty. This is usually after a section on WW1. Admittedly focusing on the Australian involvement, but still.

The tech behind those weapons have actually been put to very good uses though.

@ILuvOmarionG The movie is about the july 20 1944 plot,leaded by claus vons tauffenbaurg who states the war is lost and adolf hitler germany has to finish,so he starts leading a military coup agaisnt hitler called operation valkyrie,were he makes an explosion a on a hitlers meeting,thinking he was dead ,he managed to manipulate information sayin the ss tried to take germny,so they started arresting ss to bring down the nazis and negotiate peace with the allies,but the operation failed.

I think it's because the British accent seems more neutral to US audiences, more plausible somehow.
Also Branagh, Stamp, Nigh, Wilkinson are all fantastic actors.
They should've got the guys from Untergang to play the Nazis though, anyone else is a letdown after that.

Stauffenberg war auch kein Heiliger, noch die Gruppe um ihn. Hätte das Attentat geklappt, gab es von der Gruppe schon Pläne für die künftige Regierung und diese Pläne waren ebenfalls alles andere als friedlich, gerecht oder tolerant gegenüber Juden. Hitler was really after gaining the part of Germany that was lost during WWI. He had an idea I'd imagine to combine all of Europe together and creating the Third Reich. Hitler also knew that the USSR would eventually try to push into Europe and take it over...Commies were already trying to get elected during the 30s. So what does that tell you?

The tech behind those weapons have actually been put to very good uses though.
Jets now ferry people across the planet in the span of a day. Rockets have put men on the moon and communication satellites into orbit. Hell, even the computer has its roots in WW2, simply because both sides needed a way to calculate artillery trajectories in a hurry.
