the actions of this pilot is called "being a professional..." that is having a total understanding of your craft and the circumstances that will influence your decisions executing your craft.
shouldn't the ATC the one that should give them the assistance where to land the safest. i mean.. they lost both trust on both engines.. dont the ATC guy know they could not make the turn??
@crumcon he can give assistance however when an emergancy mayday type call is given especially of this severity the pilot is perfectly within his rights to disregard any atc comand and/or faa/caa regulation he deems nessary
Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger deserves all the praise, and recognition, that he has received, and will receive in the future, for his incredible feat of life-saving, piloting skill. I, also, believe that this guy deserves the highest possible award that can be bestowed upon him, for his actions in preventing an horrendous disaster. I feel that it's also worth mentioning the impressive speed, efficiency and professionalism, with which the air traffic controller dealt with the situation!
Funny coincidence? Cactus was the callsign of Marine fighters on Guadalcanal after the Navy bailed out and left them on their own on Henderson Field in 1942.
Id prefer that plane doesnt be back up in the sky. I dont feel comfertable with my pilot saying "hey folks, just thought id let you know your in the plane that landed in the hudson river!" haha
this is amazing he most definitely was calm and collected and did not freak out im proud we have awesome people out there like him :) if im on an airplane i want him as a pilot
1) Your grammar is way off, 2) Pilots do not train to land on the water! The process is called ditching. A commercial airliner is not designed to land on the water. Therefore, there cannot be training for it. Think before speaking you ignoramus!
1) my grammar is equal 2) I mean that they train emergency´s in a Simulator, and I have my PPLA flight license I know whereof I speak, I think i know more about these things as you, so don´t get on my nerves...
ive listened to this a number of times, and im in awe every time. that was crazy. the pilot and crew of that plane were absolutely amazing. "great job" doesnt begin to describe it....
As Sully has said in his interviews "it was a team effort" these behind the scenes audio tapes, make us aware that many people contributed to the success of the landing and rescue
I give it to you that they certainly did have luck as those types of airliners do tend to go nose first due to the drag the engines produce once they touch the water. The part that gets me from your comment is the fact you call the passengers "American bastards" since that was rude and extremely un-called for.
Wow dude. Wtf is wrong with you. "It didnt nosdive and kill all those American bastards". Way to show your colors. Even if you dont like the country a person is a person. No one deserves to die for no reason.
Much props to the pilot on how he handled the situation. It was so amazing hearing how calm he was despite of he stuation. they should do something about those birds being around that area. God is good. have a blessed day!
simpsonstewie, you just called a terrifying,ice-in-the-guts,life-or-death maneuver that all pilot's pray never to need to employ, "doing a video game in real life."
YOU are a FUCKING FOOL. Or simply eleven years old.
Man, these guys must be incredibly trained to remain that calm during so dire an emergency. I mean, loss of both engines right after take-off? This must be near worst case scenario. Hat's off to the pilot and the tower for showing us how it's done.
I thought those jet engines were designed to tear through birds. I once saw an old video of some testing and the engine was tearing up through some big chunks of hail.
I think they can do it in moderation, like one or two birds, but if they hit an entire flock of birds like I think they did, then they have some trouble... not sure though.
A water ditch is considered one of the hardest maneuvers to perform. It's considered "near impossible" and "practically suicidal" by many seasoned pilots, so the fact that he performed a perfect water ditch is nothing short of incredible.
Teterboro airport is so close to the Hudson river, I have no idea why he didn't just landed it there savely instead without risking the lives of so many people. He had enough flight time probably, even on engine failure. This whole story is very weird to hear.
Probably because he couldn't be for sure if he would make it there and crashing in the city would be a whole lot worse than dumping it in the water. Most of the airports in NYC and Newark are right next to the river, but the pilots obviously didn't think they could make it to one. Why is that so hard to believe?
Sully needs to be awarded a medal, and it should be presented by Wesley Autrey, (NYC's last totally awesome hero-he's the man who jumped in front of the subway to save the man having the seizure) I LOVE NEW YORK!!!! I'm claiming Sully as an honorary New Yorker.
pilot definitely deserved to be called a hero...but did anyone else notice that both the pilot and the air traffic controller were referring to the wrong plane? the plane Cactus 1549...the pilot said cactus 1539...and the air traffic controller several times said cactus 1529...interesting...
Team work... They all get a BIG FAT A-PLUS with a GOLD STAR on their report cards. Cool headed pilot who knew what he was doing. And controllers who were showing their stuff when it comes to "SITUATIONAL AWARENESS"... SNAP SNAP SNAP TOP NOTCH DECISION MAKING!!!
Thanks to a well trained pilot.. And the controllers CLEARING the heck out of every runway in the area to give him room to land if he did make it. I think you're just trying to push someones buttons is all.
In case you didn't know. No one has EVER successfully ditched a commercial airliner before. It is the first time in history, and the fact that not one died or suffered serious injuries is a miracle and testament to the pilots skills.
Are You really an idiot or don't watch the news much?

The first ever successful ditching of a commercial airliner. Not to mention the fact it occurred just after takeoff, and with both engines out, so even less time for the pilot to position himself. And everyone survived.
