I disagree with your comment about lion dancing getting uglier and uglier. I found Hok Seng's emotions absolutely beautiful. Definitely one of my favorite teams to watch.
u're correct that this isn't anything new, because pre-jongs competitions were mostly like this..it is the recent changes in china competitions rulings towards making lion dancing more of an acrobatic sport that prompted the organizers to come up with this again
your examples though, show that u're getting the wrong idea of what the competition is about. the examples that u've given are just jongs performances with other props..It's not about using props other than jongs, it is more about performing a traditional title together with a jongs performance
and i get your point that the board is a cheap alternative..but thats exactly just it i guess..this is a small competition in conjunction with a team's anniversary..i doubt many teams put in serious thought into the competition..so y waste so much in the looks department?
the board is only an avenue for teams to show off their traditional prowesses.y limit it to being a bridge if other teams can use it as a cave, etc?
i agree wholeheartedly with u on this 1..but then again, lets be honest with ourselves..how many ppl who 'dont know anything about lion dancing' actually gives a shit about what we do as lion dancers?
these people u speak of also have no clue what jongs are,y 2 men are snuggling under a cloth, y oranges are used instead of apples, y the lion doesnt eat meat instead, u get the drift...
most of them i've come across think its uncool and should be left as,just as u've said, a dying tradition..
Muar Always got the best lion dance ..XD

what with the pole?
why is there a board at the end of the jongs?
that look so retarded and cheesy....
desenutz18 2 years ago
u probably wouldn't have come across as such a retard urself if u had taken time to read the video info...
this isn't a jongs competition...the board is supposed to be a traditional bridge
liondoncefreak 2 years ago
i did read it
why not use a real bridge instead?
why use a bord on top of the jongs?
you know how TACKY this looks?
use a bamboo ladder, or something else to cross the jong
or even a table would look better
but a board on top of the jongs?
desenutz18 2 years ago
and not like this is anything new
back than in the 1990 competitions
there been mixture of props along with jongs already
look at the hk team i know for sure, they had benches and pots and jongs on there
i know in another competition some team had a ladder in between their two set of jongs

represent a cave..represent a bridge...
if someone does not know anything about lion dancing, they will not have a clue that the board is to represent a bridge or a cave....
lion dance tradition is dieing.....gets uglier and uglier every year in my opinion
