  • might be my favorite Joanna song ever, and I love everything she's ever done. Also, not exactly what I had envisioned as a music video, but the pictures are really nice.

  • I wish this song were longer.

  • she's bluebeard's wife.

  • just amazing...!

  • I mean... Wow...

  • Who in the heck is the dislike?

  • Holy shit. Collapse in relief. This song...catharsis...all the right places...

  • "when you leave me alone in this old castle of mine."

    this line is so sad.

  • @madkaye "When you leave me alone in this old palace of yours"

Indeed it is very sad, like she is trapped inside his lonely world and can't get out

  • I'm dying to hear a live version of this one

  • Simply gorgeous.

  • wow, great video! i'm very impressed :D

  • Someone on songmeanings pointed out the three Bonnie Prince Billy references in the final verse of this song and it blows my mind. What a perfect subject to wrap this beautiful song around!

  • hum, I think it is just about the concept Joanna wanted the album to be. It wouldn't matter if there were 2 discs with 9 songs each, or 6 discs with 3 songs each. It is the narrative concept that helps Joanna to tell her story.

  • Please check out my new video for "Kingfisher" on YouTube. It is the companion piece to this collection of images. I think I captured the essence of the song very well. It's really just an extension of this video, but I wasn't constrained by the use of animal pairs like I was in this one. I got to use a lot more of my favorite photos in "Kingfisher."

  • this is gorgeous! great pics

  • It's called a record, guys. It's three CDs long because it fits on three records, even though it would fit on two CDs. I would think somebody else would've given estebaneeezy this very simple answer instead of barking in his face like one of Newsom's watch dogs. The 666 argument holds up; it's just an intentional decision for structural continuity across the compact disc and record formats.

  • Haha. Thanks a lot man. You know, I don't recall saying anything that could offend a normal, sensible person. It blows my mind that there a people that can speak to others like that over something so small. It's disgusting and immature, mostly because it's over YouTube.

    Anyways, let's enjoy the music.

  • @estebaneeezy

i'm sorry i even did it in jest.

  • Yeah, don't worry about it. =)

  • And I'm still being ridiculous, I'd love to figure out what these songs mean. But I'm sure the meaning anyone would discover would be either boring, or intensely personal.

  • Thank you timmy :)

  • I'm sure she has commented in this in a few interviews, but I suspect that it is her way of getting people to take their time with the music. I respectfully disagree with your 666 assessment. This album is pretty heavenly.

  • I agree with ardent. This is a sonic triptych..I think the way you interpret poetry really exposes who you are.

Because really, if you sat down and read the lyrics and figured out her references, you wouldn't find anything to worry about.

Do you know what a triptych is?

  • if there's any significance of 3 discs, six songs each, it's because each group of 6 songs were linked like chapters in a book or 3 acts of a play. The harp has long been associated with heaven for a good reason... it sounds heavenly...I can't imagine anybody making a connection with 666

  • @estebaneeezy Seriously? Just breathe, estabaneeezy. It will be okay.

  • That's right up there with all the,"if you play the album backwords it says ...... " ,talk from the seventies. What kind of a sign are you looking for from Joanna Newsome? If it were done intentionally what would it mean to you? Do you think that maybe she's the devil? I think I read somewhere he comes playin a piano and a harp, singing beautiful songs and you will worship him. hehehehehehehe wow! Unbelievable. thx for the humor I guess.

  • @estebaneeezy

Newsom's music is chock full of references to occult and pagan symbols. I wouldn't think this one is intentional. also fukk you chrischin fagit hail satan

  • please tell me that you are being intentionally ridiculous.

  • *in reference to timmy

  • @angievigilante

yes. Yes I am being ridiculous. And not trying to offend anyone, as well, so apologies all around if self-identified Christians or christian haters are offended.

I prefer to enjoy the beauty of poetry, myhts, and religion, without worrying about picking sides or penultimate "meanings".

  • trying to think of a way "penultimate" is correctly used here, got nothing

  • @StanWorship

irregardless my point is probably clear.

  • @timmythetoolshed

irregardless isn't a word. I'm sorry, but English isn't my first language and even I know that.

  • @monkeywwee

    I could care less!

  • @estebaneeezy

This album contains amazing poetry, metaphors, and even references to heaven, and what do people focus on? The number used in a book to identify Nero Claudius Caesar, a number that varies depending on biblical translation. Let's dig a little deeper... into our understandings of religion and Joanna.

  • @estebaneeezy i thought the same thing the other day, lol...but maybe she jus wasn't looking into it in that aspect..and i doubt 8th graders really know who the hell Joanna Nwsom is.. their to busy with Paramore and such lol

  • @90sbaby92

My sister is in middle school. I'm glad she's smarter than most kids. Anyway, about that whole 666 thing...whatever. I think she just had 18 tracks and thought, "I have 18 tracks that could fit on 2 CDs...but I think I'll put them on 3 discs to screw with poeple." Whatever man. Have One On Me is a neat album. haha. And "Go Long" is beautiful.

  • @90sbaby92 Well, I'm just out of 8th grade, and I love Joanna's music. Especially kingfisher. great video, by the way. I really like the pictures.

  • @Allycat101010 you tell em :)

  • @estebaneeezy If she put it on to 2 discs it wouldn't have had the same flow - it would have been too much music in one go. Each disc begins with the sort of song that would start an album (or in this case what I like to call a chapter) and ends with the sort of song that would end an album/chapter. I've never listened to the album from start to finish in one go and I don't think it's really designed for that, anyway.

  • @estebaneeezy The songs are all pretty long. So they'd take up a fair bit of disk space. Having 3 seperate disks breaks down the "Listen to the first half of a CD in the car and never reach the end" syndrome.

And it just makes sense that if you have 18 on 3 disks, you WOULD split them 666. And "Satanic" references are pretty obviously coincidential at best.

  • Beautiful photos! I think Joanna would approve. I find it better than pictures of her, though she IS gorgeous. I think people appreciate her TALENT more if they don't get distracted by the image. It makes you REALLY listen to the music; this BEAUTIFUL music. Tears in my eyes. Thank you.

  • Thank you for your kind words. I tried to pay homage to the African influence in the song and Joanna's passion for nature. I hope you are right about her approval. It is my pleasure to share these images.

  • This is possibly the most beautiful song I've ever heard.

  • agreed

  • Well, hello there Ducky ;)

  • Hellbender, I know!! (love, Ducky)

  • Dude...how did you get the animals to pose for you!?! Seriously, though, great pics. And good choice of music. Thanks for posting :-)
