Plus, You can't play Prototype without being Alex. Sure, there can be other people you can play as, but replacing Alex would not allow this game to make a cent. People you are looking at this all wrong here is one bug thing you are missing, at what point in the story does this game take place, think about it. At the end of the first game NYC was sorta saved, now it looks more fucked up than ever, until you know when the story takes place you won't know if Alex exactly dies or not.

Not sure what extent James' powers are superior to Alxe's, but you can tell Heller is stronger because Alex can only pick up a tank if it's partly destroyed. But Heller could pick up a completely unharmed tank with elongated arms and possibly Hammerfist hands to hold it and smash it to the ground killing enemies below. Mercer can't do that......
