I agree that the judges and the audiences can be (and often are) unnecessarily or preemptively harsh, but we should remember that this is not a competition judging how nice and what lovely souls people are, but a serious TALENT competition. If a person is untalented or unable to perform before an audience (with potential negative feedback; all professionals get it, but have to carry on gracefully) -- however sweet the person is -- he/she has no place on the stage.
