saw them twice at Carnegie Hall. wine skin oj/acid and finger lickin cocoa/psilo. Scot Muny introed them and this they played first. Terry--so good. Saw all 20 of Danny's sticks in spotlight solo. Loved the guy who did the Ed Sullivan impersonation during interm (both concerts). and the girl who yelled out "Jiiimmmmyyyy" which is on live album.
Putting aside the incredible quality of the music itself, it's a shame that their followup sound quality sounds so crappy in comparison to this one. I wonder why?
Peter Cetera is one of the great underrated bassists of rock. 3:00 to 4:00 is as much of a bass solo as a trumpet solo...really shows off his talent as a melodic player.
I saw them warm up for Hendrix in Houston. They did the entire CTA album..I learned later, B,S and T were sitting in the row in front of us to check out Columbia's new Jazz/Rock fusion group. They had played the same venue the night before..near Hermann Park. I felt a tad sorry for them (Blood, Sweat and Tears..not to take anything away from them) but CTA..that was once in a lifetime as was Jimi.
When I purchased Chicago Transit Authority LP back in the mid-1970s, I had no idea at that time that I was purchasing a super classic piece of work! At that point of time, I only knew of "Feeling Stronger Everyday," "Just You and Me" and "Wishing You Were Here"!
"Introduction" was definitely a very strong start to Chicago's early days and its first album! The first one is definitely my favorite among Chicago's albums.
Amazing album. I grew up on Zep. Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Grand Funk. Massive walls of impressive sound. But Chicago, with all their horns (horns?) just blew me away within my heavy metal reverie. This was my sister's album (thank heavens for big sis's album collection) and I don't know how many times I listened to it. I was so happy when chromium di-oxide tapes came out. They were better at handling my abuse. Amazing album.
This is TRUE Jazz Rock!! THe Best Chicago tune of all time because it takes you through every aspect of what they represented musically........thier best album by far also....Their music died when Terry died. RIP Terry Kath a true original
@Faithwitness Your comment is so true. So much of music today is so bland and way overproduced. Too many talentless groups on the charts today. This music sounds sooo much better that much of todays sad excuse for music. Don't get me started on rap and hip-hop.
@somedkram I don't TOTALLY agree with that: they DID shift around a few times, but they found their second wind in the early to mid 1980's again, THEN they went on asteady decline, beginning with the departure of Peter Cetera
One of Chicago's greatest songs. While the whole band is working well here, it's Terry Kath's immense talent (composer, singer, guitarist) and the fantastic brass section that stand out the most.
the arrangement is out of this world are u fukkin kiddin me? this is the shit. ive played violin in the sixth grade, trumpet in the seventh, drums eighth thru first year in college and the guitfiddle(guitar) for the last twenty.I know music very well and this is the shit
@TheSteven8r I don't know if you pro or con with" this is the shit." I am a woodwind player and have covered many of their early songs.with several bands. It is very challenging and satisfiying to learn and perform their music. To this day I point out to especially the young how complex and deep their music and how shallow and repetitive most of the popular new music is. Now it's all about attitude and posing versus the substance of a group like Chicago.
@MiGrm9 Wow; quoting a Shakespearean sonnet to describe Terry Kath. I'm impressed. Here's some more: "Thou art more lovely and more temperate. Rough winds do shake the elevators in the Sears Tower, and summer's lease hath all too short a date. Sometimes too hot the eye of heaven shines... " [with a bit of Weird Al thrown in for good measure.]
The first song on their first album.... the best self-INTRODUCTION of a band into rock business EVER !! ("We're a little nervous and so far from home" - cool !)
@funch357 Striking evidence of their creativity and the complexity of their musical ideas, the way they veered off like that and incorporates so many elements. A bravura declaration of purpose
@MusicWriter1965 Yup. That's the g-spot, LOL! What's also fascinating about this piece is its more jazz-like musical structure that also contains structural elements of a classical suite. I'm no musician, so perhaps I'm using inaccurate terms.
I got to meet Terry & Walter shortly before Terry's death. I was a kid & a gal who worked for my pop took me to see Chicago. I was asked if I'd like to see what it looks like from on the stage. Up there this big dude & another guy walked up & said hello to my host (a friend of the band). I was in 8th grade & they were shocked I was a fan. Walter gave me five & told me to keep the faith. Terry shook my hand & told me how cool it was guys "my age" were still listening & thanked me for coming!
@redfishradical That's a great story. Keep the faith indeed. I'm a bit older than you -- I was 14 when the first album came out in '69, and was a big fan from the beginning. That was a sad sad day when he died. Obviously, they were never the same band after that, but they left us some great albums -- those first five were classics
@redfishradical Wow........that is mind blowing to think you experienced that.......when this record came out it was college age material so you probably fired them up at your age......
Got this one on a whim...something about it 'cause had never heard of them...and I was in for a wonderful treat. Thanks pal, great days are here still...
Saw your post on "Introduction" by Chicago. Terry Kath wrote this tune and sings lead vocals and guitars. He tragically killed himself in 1978 as an accidental victim of a self inflicted gunshot wound. ANYWAY, he was awesome to see live in performance and always played excellently. Check out my Chicago videos on my channel and you can see him in action. I saw him and Chicago perform several times; 9 or 10 in the '70's in Michigan. Have a great day listening to Chicago! Rock on. TK still jams!
@lynnybradford Terry Kath wrote this.........sang it and played that unreal guitar solo......he is one of the most overlooked talents in music...........Jimi Hendrix said he was a better guitar player than him and so impressed was Hendrix that he was instrumental in helping get this band signed to a label when he heard them at the Wiskey A Go Go in LA back in the day....
@lynnybradford Terry Kath along with Blood, Sweat & Tears' David Clayton Thomas were both "blue-eyed soul" guys who modeled their singing styles after the great RAY CHARLES. I really liked Kath's & Thomas' voices back in the day (still do), but when I found out they weren't the originals--that Ray Charles was--I fell down & worshipped @ the altar of RAY CHARLES.
