This is so great! It can be very difficult to understand how to perform a sign from a book (although some describe visually the signs very well), so this will be much easier! I was just talking to an interpreter at my tech college the other day- she said that she mostly learned directly from deaf people, that if you went to any deaf clubs or gatherings hoping to learn, they'd be really helpful. :) Then again, this is Madison, WI, and we're all pretty polite here.
@AshleyMichele07 Everytime I sign and my wrist is part of the action it cracks! I never broke my wris or my arm, it started to crack when I was learning ASL. How can I stop it and is it normal?? Im really nervous my wrist bone is gonna grow larger since its always cracking. Please help and answer!!
Everytime I sign and my wrist is some part of the action it cracks! I never had a broken wrist arm and it started to crack when i'm learning how to sign. Help?? How do I stop making it crack!?? Please answer!!
Thank you for posting these videos! I learned the alphabet in ASL years ago for a church program. i always wanted to learn more, but never got around to it. Now I'm starting to:) I don't personally know anyone who is deaf or hard of hearing, I just find ASL fascinating and really am excited to learn it! :)
my aim is to learn 5 languages by the time i m 30. I m already fluent in 3. And i have learnt sanskrit for 5 years, so i can say, i know 3 and half. I was planning to learn chinese soon.. then i thought of learning sign language to increase my friend circle beyond i could have imagined. (chinese people can learn english and talk with me... :P),, This seems like a very good place to start.
Thank you do much for uploading I do have one suggestion tho maybe subtitling I can't keep up, I don't want to be rude but it's a little hard for me to understand
Thank you so much for teaching my sign language. I have a deaf Half cousin and I felt really bad and I tryed to avoid her beacuse I couldnt do sign language but thanks to you I have now learnt it!! I also think it is amazing with the amount of courage and guts you have to do this video when you are actually deaf yourself. I really adimire you for showing something like this to us! :) :)
I'd like to get back into learning sign language again. When I was taking sign language classes, I was like the big fish in a small pond. I would also go to Deaf socials twice a month and when I was trying to communicate with Deaf people, I was a little fish in a big pond.
This is great! You speak so well. I desperately want to learn sign. You mentioned that you went to a normal public school and had an interpreter. I would love to be an interpreter for deaf children. I wish I could find a formal class for learning sign because it is hard. Thank you for sharing your videos and teaching us sign language.
Great video. I appreciate you for having the courage to post a video being yourself and teaching sign language very well. You could always be a sign language instructor for school! You have taught me so much. I have people in my family who are deaf and have always wanted to learn sign language to better communicate! Thank you!
Ashley I think its great that you are doing these videos...i hope they will help bridge the gap between hearing an non. I have been looking for lessons, but I cant afford any that i have found. I know a little sign and these will help me learn more. I have a friends son who isnt deaf but has a hard time with speech, this will be great for him.
Thank you Ashley for making these videos! I'm going to be taking some sign language classes soon and wanted to get a head start. I'm a police officer and being able to sign will be a great thing. btw, I think you are very pretty.
@AshleyMichele07 im just kidding im trolling the internets. I actually came to your video to learn sign language because i get so many guests at olive garden that are deaf and im always wishing i could communicate better. Thanks for responding though! that's kinda the response i was looking for. :)
Thank you so much! I'm a beginner in learning ASL and I can't wait to learn it! It looks like such a beautiful language, and I'm very excited to start learning! Your videos help me a lot!
And you speak very well!!!! Thank you so much for these videos, i've been trying to get my friend to teach me what she knows because ASL was her first language (her grandparents were deaf) but it's been hard since she moved so far away, these videos are really helping me remember everything :) And a weird tidbit, Thank you so much for fingerspelling in your videos, it's good practice for me since that's my biggest problem :)
thank you for taking the time to do these videos, my aunt and uncle are deaf and it was always hard for me to communicate with them when they visit because they live in California, ive always wanted to learn but had a hard time learning from books. I read above that you never went to a deaf school so how did you learn to sign?
@mobius1521 I went to mainstream school my whole life that there have a interpreters there for deaf who goes there for public school not for deaf school. I first started to learn sign language in my former elementary school when I transfered there when I was 7 in the fall school 1st day of school.
I find her difficult to understand but after I watch the video a few times I can understand her much better. It's similar to when I meet people with accents I'm unfamiliar with. In the beginning it's difficult for me to make it out but after a few minutes or so my brain just seems to process it better and we're good to go. Some people find it the same way from there end, when it comes to me. Especially considering I'm from LA and now live in NY
im gonna be 16 soon, nd im having hearing loss. it is most likely that i will fully lose my hearing before im even 18, so thx for posting these videos! i get a head start! lol :D
I watch Switched at Birth. it's one of my favorite TV shows. And it's inspired me to want to learn sign language. Thank you for doing this, it's helpful to people who want to learn to sign a little. And your speaking is really good! Good job overall!!!
@MusicalKay28 lol cool. That show actually inspired me to take up learning sign language too. So far I"ve only got the alphabet done but it's turning out to be really fun
I started learning for the same reason! I watched Switched at Birth and was interested in learning. This is a great video and helped me a lot with the basics!
@abrooke0011 Me too! (Watching Switched at Birth).... it looked like such a fascinating language to learn! It's on my bucket list to learn it... i'm a beginner :)
I am left handed so i use my left hand to sign. does this affect the word and make it wrong or a different pronounciation? How did you find out you were deaf and when you went to school did you go to a public school or a school for the deaf? Also, i like your shirt your very pretty. :)
@lilmissymusicfan I have a friends who is left handed and does sign too. Whenever you comforable with it. :) I really dont remember how I became deaf because I was really young at age 2 years old. My parents found out when I was deaf. I feel like I'm normal. I went to mainstream school (went public school) my whole life & no deaf school.
Thank you so much you are so amazing for taking time to do this. My best friend is deaf and i really want to make it easier for her. i watch your video often and i practise in the mirror. i'm looked online, and there really isn't much thats helpful. I cannot thank you enough. I'm curious, why is it that some deaf people are comfortable speaking vocally, whereas other prefer not to. Is it because its hard on your throat or are they just not comfortable speaking?
@lilmissymusicfan I've been speaking my whole life. Been take speech therphy since at age 3 until I stopped at age 17 after end of my junior year at high school.....15 years. There is nothing wrong with my throat. There is nothing wrong with me. My voice is just fine. Its just normal. You know sometimes deaf or hard of hearing not comforable to speech or talking. I am comforable with talking. That what I'm proud of. If they have hard time understand me or others. I would write it down a paper.
You are amazing! Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos! I have been searching local community classes, and they all treat it like a 'hobby' in which I would have to take ASL Course 1, then Course 2, etc... I dont know why I didnt think to search YouTube before! LOL! Thanks again for doing this! I am going to try and learn from you! Keep up the great work!
Oh, and I can understand you just fine, you speak very well actually! :)
Amazing. I've been wanting too learn Sign language for a while now. I just never had the chance too do it. I understand you perfectly. My boyfriend is learning sign language he only knows a few, but he is hard of hearing and he had a hard time understanding, even though he reads lips really well. So I'm learing as well, so him and i can talk more. You are brave and should be proud of yourself for speaking and being deaf most people are afraid too do so. But you should be proud :) God Bless!
You are very brave to put this up. My best friend is deaf and she doesn't really talk out loud to other people besides close family and friends. I'm trying to learn sign so we can be out in public and we not have to text for me to know whats she trying to say. She won't talk in front of large groups of her family so she texts me what she wants to say for every one who don't sign. This video has tough me the, what i think are the most important signs. Thank you so much for your bravery.
Thank you for posting this. I've been trying to learn sign language for about a year now but I can sign. I'm 14 years old and I have hearing problems, I have to get hearing tubes put in my ears, and thats another reason why i'm trying to learn sign, just in case I wake up one morning and I can't hearing anything, and my voice is starting to sound a little weird to me when I talk. Thanks for posting this, it really helped me:)
Edit.. I forgot to ask, does it matter on which way is the palm of hand facing? Or thumb? For example, if I make O can I have thumb facing towards me?
I am just learning sign language and your videos are super helpful! Thanks! I was wondering if it matters which hand to use to sign. I noticed you are using your right hand, but when I follow you I mirror you and I am using my left hand, will that make any difference?
@missrandomgirl1 Thanks. Depend if your hands comforable with signing. If you are right or left hand. I'm right hand. Mirror is really helpful to practice yourself. I do that all the times because I do that for habits lol.
thank you for this video :) i've always wanted to learn because i know someone who is deaf and i hate not being able to communicate with him :) this has helped so much!!
if anyone would like to skype and learn more signing i would love to i am teaching myself the best i can and would love to have people to sign with...message me on here!! and we can skype!
To any one who dislike this video: How dare you?! This Amazing lady took time to make this video to help people learn SL even though she can't talk well. I understood the words just fine & she's spelling the words out for you. The least you can do is thank her for posting the video.
'To Ashley Michele: Thanks so much for posting this. My cousin found out she's going deaf, so she's learning SL too. I didn't know where to go so I came to youtube & found your video. Thank you. P.S. your beautiful
@PiggyManXD yeah there have alot differnet language like BSL (British Sign Language) ASL (American Sign Language) SEE (Signing Exact English) ESL (English Sign Language) Japansee, China..etc. There are many language in different country.
ive had a wonderful man in my life for the last year who has menares disease and is slowly going deaf. as a result he studied sign language and is fluent. he doesn't want to burden me with learning, but now i can study in my spare time and suprise him!! this has inspired me to order some books and begin to absorb everything i can! maybe i'll even take a class... THANKS!!! you are awesome - best of luck to you :)
You have no idea how much this video has helped me :D I've always really wanted to learn sign language but they never put me in the asl class at my school so I've been trying to learn online. Please keep putting up videos!
Thank you SOOOO much for making this video. I have been wanting to learn ASL for the longest time, and you do it beautifully. You should be proud. I feel that words are only clouds of sound. But to be able to sign, that is a gift. You understand emotion better than most with signing.... I am so thankful that you took your time to make this video. :)
Just wondering if there was a certain speed that you have to do the signs. Like if doing a sign faster or slower makes it a different word I guess. Thanks so much for putting this up!
Wow. I have been looking EVERYWHERE for a sign language video to be taught how to sign, and after looking at at least 5, I came across your lovely video. This is amazing, and so are you:) Thank you so much. I watch your videos as much as I can because I want to learn sign language so badly, and your videos are the only ones i`ve seen that actually teach me well ! You go through the actions repeatedly and slowly, which i appreciate. Anyway, I`m so glad I found your videos :) Thank you so much !
I am glad I found your video on here. I was learning asl from my step family so I could sign to my step sister and step brother but they moved to Florida before I learned enough. I still want to learn for when they visit. I feel so stupid next to them. lol! Thank you for your videos. They are helping me and your speech is extremely good. :)
Hi Ashley, GREAT JOB with this videos!!!!!!, I have no idea how many do you have but I'm gonna work with your videos until the very end. I need to ask you something, I learnt some sign language in my country (venezuela) and I'm wondering if the signs you are teaching here could work in all north america, now I'm leaving in Canada!!. Thanks!!
took me 30 minutes... but i learned the alphabet.. :) i didnt know a thing!! thnk u soo much... u teach vry well tomorrow ill continue with the rest....
When I was younger I had something called Glue Ear, which meant the tubes in my ears did not grow properly, so from the age of 3 to around 11 I was partially deaf. I'm 15 now and no longer have hearing problems, but sign language still fascinates me, thank you for this guide. Also, you speak very well, I can understand you and I know some viewers might not, but it's amazing that you can and do so well. :)
@AshleyMichael you are very brave and don't worry about not being able to understand u. Many deaf people are afraid to speak and ur not! I am proud of you. And you should be proud of urself
@sugaluv4141 Thank you for that comment. BTW you misspell wrong my middle name its Michele. LOL. Its okay. As a child I have hard time speaking little bit but went to speech therphy my whole life since when I was like 2 half or 3 years old until I stopped at age 17 just after end of junior year High School. I used to be afraid when I was kid but it keep me going talking and talking more with my family. Now I'm proud to be myself. :)
@CelebrianoLorien I'm sorry if you cant understand. =/ But it took forever to make to put subtitles, Sorry I couldn't do that. but by the way there is a words in desp box...
@CelebrianoLorien you know that is very mean and you should not talk like that to her i think she is very understandable and she did great! very good job!
@burnfireblaze2271 If I wanted to be mean, I would have worded it differently. She is very kind to do this for us. I was just expressing my own difficulties in understanding.
@AshleyMichele07 omg you are very pretty btw and im glad you posted this video =] my ex gf was deaf and she broke up with me because she didn't think hearing people nd deaf peple could get long id still like to learn anyway thnx =]
I have a lot of deaf friends so I really want to learn sign language. You're sooooo pretty, and you're a really good teacher! I can understand you just fine. Thank you for such a great tutorial :)
Im going to watch this everyday until I learn it. I really want to learn sign lanuage. I was surprised to knw that i actually knew over half of the alphabets
My boyfriend was born deaf and i only know a few basic words so i cant really talk to him that much. These videos are really going to help me out though! Thanks for posting these! :)
I know that I really want to say that I cmae here for a passion for Sign Language, but really, my mother was watching a show on ABC called Switched at Birth and I realised I could, in a way, relate to that because I am 'Hard of Hearing' in my left ear, born that way. I've known since I was five years old but my parents just found out and their going crazy looking for Aids and sites. I don't need all that. I'd rather just watch you Ashly!
you r amazing .. Im not deaf but I juss really wanna learn sign language!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) U MAKE IT LOOK EASY!!!!!!!! IM SRRY FOR UR HEARING LOSS IS EVERYTHING ALRIGHT?????
I think u r a beautiful young lady and Don't let These people with stupid comments bring u down...Keep up the great work and I luv your video's..People can b very ignorant and have nothing going for them so they decide to go and make dumb remarks on people's video's..GREAT JOB
Your video was recommended on another youtube area :). "Who" and "what" in here, are very different than what I've learned elsewhere, but I understand its different in different regions. Thanks for sharing.
I found it quite difficult to understand you, but the words in the comments helped :) I'd consider learning sign language but it seems awfully difficult and daunting since I've never even taken a glance at it before!
I don't have any trouble hearing you at all but I am watching this because my ASL teacher told me to check you out and he is Deaf. This was great review for my test thank you. :)
Thank you very much your an awesome teacher of sign language, I intend to learn more :)

Tyris1013 1 month ago
I am just learning sign language and your videos are super helpful! Thanks! I was wondering if it matters which hand to use to sign. I noticed you are using your right hand, but when I follow you I mirror you and I am using my left hand, will that make any difference?
missrandomgirl1 1 month ago
@missrandomgirl1 Thanks. Depend if your hands comforable with signing. If you are right or left hand. I'm right hand. Mirror is really helpful to practice yourself. I do that all the times because I do that for habits lol.
