  • Only a loony left, PC nutter (there are a lot of them about these days sadly) would see this as racist. People like them won't be happy until we're all praying at the local mosque five times a day. Our traditions are being destroyed a little at a time thanks to traitors like Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

  • If this is racist, then my great-uncle Idris was being a racist every time he came up out of the coal mines covered in black dust. I'm glad to see people maintaining a great British tradition in spite of those who would force change due to a misinterpretation.

  • I think people just think "coco-nut & blacked face" and get the wrong Idea. This is not racist. You want to see racist... that is still accepted, go to Cape Town and watch a 'Coon' show. We all shout racist, when the locals don't care less.

  • At 'fightmma' - if you would care to learn about this fine coutnrys traditions the faces are blacked because of the miners.

dont display your ignorance in public so vividly

  • What's with the racist faces?

  • @fightermma try looking it up on wikipedia....

  • @Nolansykinsley I know what they claim they are doing, it's pretty obvious coal faces etc but it's still racist.

  • @fightermma OMFG dude, have you ever seen a coal miner come out of a coal mine? they looked like that!! They were the original makers of this dance! But no, people like you are the true racists, "it's a white guy in black makeup so it has to be racist". This dance was started in 1857 by COAL MINERS, it has NOTHING TO DO WITH RACE. If they where white guys imitating black people then yes, it would be racist. Coal miners at the end of a hard days work were covered in coal, GET IT NOW??

  • @Nolansykinsley I think you'll find that I mentioned the dance was about coal miners. I said it's racist because I white man purposlly covering his face with black paint would offend black people. These people are grown up and probablly know this yet carry on doing it. Why not just do the dance? Heck even use pick axes as props if you want but not the face paint. Rcist comedians use to cover there faces like this when imitating racial stereotypes of black people. Thats why this is racist.

  • Dude to come out of the coal mines after a hard days work covered in black was a badge of honor, to show that you put in a hard days work to provide for your family. This dance dates to 1857, do you really expect them to change so much tradition just because a few people cannot see the TRUE meaning of the performance and MIGHT be offended? To say "It is a white guy in black makeup so it must be racist" Is true racism. LOOK BEYOND THE COLOR.

  • Its a question of consideration for your fellow man.

  • @fightermma Consideration?? That they can't see the true meaning? This dance has a long history, it would be inconsiderate to expect them to change it just because someone couldn't see the heritage behind this dance.

  • anyone know the actual names of the dancers in this?

  • @WeWereTheEggmen

Pugh, Pugh, Barney Mcgrew, Cuthbert, Dibble an Grub an Cpt. Slack!

  • Thumbs up if Iain Lee sent you here ;)

  • Dad was born and breed in Bacup but left for University (and a big thank you to Bacup Grammer for fighting his corner and getting his scholarship for that) when he was18 and never returned except for family visits - I think the Rossendale valley's own weather system of seemingly rain 24/7 did for him. Visiting Grandma as a child was like entering another world.

  • fer those for'in types; Bacup is pronounced Back-up...... NOT Bay-Cup.nossir, never Bay-Cup, ooh! Local types ave bin known to murder strangers to their lands.... an they dont av webbed feet!

  • @OurnameisLegion66 got any decent chippys in "back-up" cos me and my mate are planning a trip up(ooop) there this easter

  • I went to watch them 30 years ago and this tune has never left my head as I must have heard it about 200 times on the day from pub to pub. If you haven't been to see them I'd recommend that you go at least once in your lifetime, it's a great day with lots of folk music going on in the pubs in Bacup. It's a good place to buy your clogs.

  • I'm from the south east but the NW dances are just great.

  • I know ken harvy who is 1 of da coco nutters

  • i know all the coconutters as im in the band haha

  • Has nobody caught onto the fact that these guys are blacked up?!!

  • Keep in mind the "Nutters" are derived from traditions going back centuries, so it's not always clear what's at the root. Their Web site does note that the dances may have originated with Moorish pirates (hence the costumes), but also says the tradition of blackened faces could refer to the coal mining that has been a staple of the region, and/or pagan and medieval times when dancers disguised themselves to "hide from evil spirits."
