I keep different portfolios for different things. I have one for design work. One for illlustrations and artworks..other media and one for writing which I'm starting.
i've heard of people having a 'sketchbook portfolio' and a separate regular portfolio... both presented in a professional manner of course. like... scanning in a printing out your sketches, or something like that.
I've watched four of these portfolio videos. Two thoughts came to mind. 1.Welcome to the world of self editing!It truly can be a nightmare. 2. As someone who's made a living as a photographer since 1986, you remind me of the people that I've worked for who ran their design firms. I mean that in a good way, in the sense that you have what seems like unlimited creative energy, as well as having a firm sense of what you want to do and why. Good luck with the editing!
I knew you wouldn't get away with this one without at least someone making a joke about a beaver. That cider thing was amazing. I can't get my brain around how you would begin to draw something like that.
The moustaches on those tape cassettes are reminiscent of the ones pencilled on you and your brother in that Vincent Price 'Porkchops' video. (How's that for a cross-reference?)
It is very difficult to comment here for me. Probably art must be "physically" reachable, only seeing it on screen may not be the best. But, as much as I could see you did used a lot of different techniques for the creations in your portfolio. This may be typical for a student.
I know I am not really qualified to talk about art, but I should tell you my impression I had when watching your art. the motive or themes seem not only to show modern art, they are evolved through. no artist can claim to be really without any influence.
eg if you were living on tibets plateaus for several years, i guess your creations would be very different in motive and theme, though you still would be the same person. this is a very extreme and simple example, but it shows probably best what my impression is. sometimes you have to discover things from a new perspective.
not the best comment, but i tried. :D english, as every language, can be such an obstacle if you arent experiened enough, for both, the reader and the writer. just begging for appreciation here.
Walking us through everything is probably helping you hear your own understanding of it all. I hope. Seems to me, you have the right instincts. I've interviewed hundreds of designers and I'd hire you. Mostly 'cause you are a paper whore ...like me. (;
you are really good at illustrations, like the blob thing, they really stand out and are unique. You would have to involve them in your portfolio someway!
Lots of cute stuff. If illustration is not your main focus, I'd narrow it down to illustrations done for a concept or specific purpose. Manifesto cards, electronic family/character shots, upside-down card are keepers. Love the beaver and chihuahua. Turn them into cards or logos or something. If you fold this work into the design work you will look more 'well-rounded" than confused. Best of all they do show your humour and charm.
Cool illustrations. After watching all your portfolio vids I can see why you have put off getting it all organized for so long...it's a lot of work. Hopefully by making these vids it will motivate you to finish it. : D
How much time do potential employers spend looking at portfolios? Your folio is very different from others where it's more ideas then images. Perhaps in today's world a video folio would work better. A short video on CD, since most people don't have a DVD drive at work, describing each idea in two minutes or less. The CD could also have your CV and each idea described in more detail if they're interested. You'd have to make sure the interviewer has a PC or you could bring a laptop with you.
that idea is really cool! at the same time i'd also enjoy having samples of the art right in front of me but then again this is a business not an art show...some of the personal-ness of it is lost though. but just imagine what a nice presentation that could be..a dvd would be very cool. it could be funky too bad it is true that most business computers only have cd drives.
This is my favorite segment of the portfolio show. I like to draw too. Nice stuff.

I believe they are called palindromic images.
Just kidding. But I have to say your style of illustration is very agreeable. You can't help but feel better just looking at them.
