Richard Kiley created this role and I appreciate all the comments but my 2 cents worth still puts Kiley at the top on this. Thank you all for your comments, and as a ballad singer, I still miss Vic Damone. I think he has been ignored too long.
I believe that T.H.White wrote of his Arthurian epic "The Once and Future King" ..."this is not how it was, but how it should have been". Kismet is the same, Oh how I wish it was so, especially as I get older.
Yet, today, Westgerners think the world is overpopulated, and every part of it has been charted!
Brother, there are the great majority of this Planet, I wouldn't dare step foot on, even with a rifle, such as Eurasia /Central Asia. . And there are parts that were seemingly brought forwrd in evolution, but have now fallen back...like the quiet war, Civil War, in the Congo, Africa. A Tragedy.
His voice left Vic Damone's in the film version for dead.
But Vic was under contract and had a big music following in that era.....stretching over some decades.
And the film is great fun.Listen to the double entendres. Adorable Ann Blyth, along with Howard Keel Delores Gray and Sebastian Cabot,and yes, Vic Damone, left us with a slant on life in old Baghdad.
I tell you what folks - I am not a big musical show fan but I love Borodin's works. And this arrangement and score is sensational. Believe me, really brilliant.
Beautifully crafted Broadway song that is sensual and sweet. "Songs of delight and delicious desire" .... until you get to the part where he talks about the peacocks and monkeys --- cant understand why there are animals near the bridal chamber during the night of my nights ?
Original music sheet from Dr. Alexander Borodin (1833 Russian).
You are very welcome. Being a Broadway musical, of course there was music and dancing before the singing starts. The peacocks and monkeys are part of the exotic setting, I would guess and the lyrics work. And Richard Kiley could sing about pigs and camels and still sound wonderful to me. Thanks for the comment. Funny! Although some folks don't mind the creatures around. These are in purple adornings no less and just showing the way to the bridal chamber in all innocence.

The world is a mystery. An Illusion. A Dream

Beaituful music.
Borodin wrote for a fantasy- w world tht never existed in the Arabia East or Persia.
Problem is, Westerners think it does.

@GeneralFuhao
I don't believe ALL Westerners think it did; maybe a handful or so know differently.

If you think Richard Kiley can sing, you should check out Gilbert Price's version of this song. It's great!!!!!!!!!!
