Hah, BTBAM fan is trying to get at Atheist. The reality is, Atheist defined and perfected a style of music that BTBAM can't come close to even trying to imitate. BTBAM isn't a terrible band, but Atheist are one of the leaders in the Technical movement, and a song like this makes any random BTBAM song look bad. BTBAM is more towards the "generic" side. And plus, there are bands far more technical than BTBAM and Atheist, but BTBAM fans would complain that it's "too technical".

Im just going to come right out and say it and i know all the atheist fans with freak out but steve flynn has been overreaching his level of ability for years. Most of the live performances i have seen from atheist could be a lot better with a sick drummer. Not saying he's horrible or the band is cause they were mixing jazz and metal before pretty much everyone else. He severely pushes and pulls the beat to point of being off meter.His jazz and funk beats sound like a stiff rock guy immitating.

I always loved Atheist (and always do of course)... One of my favourite bands! But to be honest, I wasn't really impressed by this perfomance... perhaps my expectations are very high! Respect to the band, they're awesome musicians, but livewise, I don't think they perform really great, if I judge from this video... They look kinda bored and the vocals seem to have lost their power or even better their feeling? Just my humble opinion... missed their show in 2006 in Greece, was in the army then :/
I think they're either bored or so focused on playing that they can't make much of a stage show. It's a VERY hard song to play after all. Also, they (especially Tony) seem to be more of jazz musicians than metalheads and you don't see jazz players headbanging very often :)
As for the vocals, dude's getting old and so are his vocal cords. Not much he can do about it.

actually thumbs up, i respect your opinion, haha. here's what i like in the bass jam, maybe not so much as what I like but what i find objectively good: the fact that he did a spinal tap jazz solo at a metal show, the tapping, essentially his performing, but when the drums come in the groove is fresh, but the jam itself wasn't the best, i admit, i think it's more of the mythical aspect of his solo in the middle of a metal show

Not Choy's best..But this is still very solid..And for being out of the game for 13 years at the time of this video, these guys still fucking kick ass. Can't wait to see 'em in two weeks.
On the official site it says that Shaefer won't be doing the guitars on the new album either. That makes me want to cry, these substitutes are terrible.
Sucks about Shaefer's voice. Sometimes it sounds way cool (like at 1:05-1:16, wtf at how awesome those screams are) but most of the time you can tell he smoked it out. Can't say much about the other guys, they don't seem too far off of their game.
They're not really substitutes....They're members of the band now. I don't think they're god awful, but they're not amazing either. Still sounds like the Atheist I know and love, minus Shaefer's voice.
By this time their guitarist kelly had to switch to rhthym guitar because of a condition that made it harder for him to play, if this was a few years ago he woulda done it ez.

i don't know if anyone would agree, but those jazzy complex rhytms reminded me of Yes "Sound Chaser" a bit. anyways, those guys are superb musicians

the sickest drummer and bassist in metal EVER!!!! .. so creative and different .. no blasts just complete insanity .. and their really nice ppl too .. i saw them @ the sterling in allentown a few months ago... and flyn was nice enough to talk drum with me and not get an "i'm a rock god" attitude

The linear poetry of notes that spoke to you? The thematic drama portrayed in it, almost like a solo from an early King Diamond album? Dude's a good bassist, that solo SUCKED. actually thumbs up, i respect your opinion, haha. here's what i like in the bass jam, maybe not so much as what I like but what i find objectively good: the fact that he did a spinal tap jazz solo at a metal show, the tapping, essentially his performing, but when the drums come in the groove is fresh, but the jam itself wasn't the best, i admit, i think it's more of the mythical aspect of his solo in the middle of a metal show

On the official site it says that Shaefer won't be doing the guitars on the new album either. That makes me want to cry, these substitutes are terrible.
Sucks about Shaefer's voice. Sometimes it sounds way cool (like at 1:05-1:16, wtf at how awesome those screams are) but most of the time you can tell he smoked it out. Can't say much about the other guys, they don't seem too far off of their game.

They're not really substitutes....They're members of the band now. I don't think they're god awful, but they're not amazing either. Still sounds like the Atheist I know and love, minus Shaefer's voice.
