Hull was nearly as worse. They got bombed from 1940 to 1945 with 95% of the buildings destroyed or damaged and nearly 200,000 civilians from hull made homeless. It was also the last british town to be bombed by manned aircraft.

My mother, and my grandparents, lived through this. My mother dodged gunfire from a Luftwaffe fighter while returning from school; schoolfriends down the road were killed in an air air-raid when their house was incendiary-bombed.

And, yes, there was unimaginable suffering on both sides. Germans did not choose to be Germans, let alone choose to be Nazis, just as we in Britain had no choice but to be British. Ordinary Dresdeners and Berliners also suffered greatly in a senseless and brutal war

As early as April 1937, the German nazis bombed the Spanish town of Guernica. Germany was not even in war with Spain!

On May 10, 1940, the German airforce bombed the German city of Freiburg, in order to have a pretence for bombing Rotterdam. I can send you the URL.

Its a myth that Londoners went to the Underground during the Blitz....its now part of the British psyche but its not that true.

I am afraid there is a lot of evidence that says otherwise including film footage and interviews with people who did take shelter on the underground.

Im not denying that on occasion small numbers used the Underground. But dont be fooled into thinking that the Tube was used by the majority, frequently, just on the basis of a few film reels. It was good for propaganda at the time (for numerous reasons) and is now so much part of the national culture a lot of the legend is ambiguous to say the least.

Historians like Noakes, Connelly and Calder are good to read if you are looking for a more accurate depiction of 'the Blitz'.

My grandfather used to live in London during WWII he would always expect his house to explode from a bomb. His father was fighting in North Africa during that time so aint so good. It gets worse he was sent up NOrth into the countryside because he was a kid. They did that to keep future generations alive.
