@liEder89 well....i stand sometimes next to Kaufmann and although Giacomini is simply the One for me, Jonas is maybe "most near" to him from current tenors. But that is thing of personal taste or more development than taste. But i would be happy to experience live someone as good as Giacomini, blessed who saw him :o)
Yes, it would have been very believable for Stanislavsky...I think that's why he reminds me of Chaliapin a bit. Giacomini was a formidable actor and musician. He considered the theater as something like a holy temple.
Yes, Giacomini is sui generis, no doubt about it. He can sound like Leonard Warren singing high notes sometimes:) Placido Domingo said he was the greatest dramatic tenor of the 20th century, but that kind of thinking stirs unnecessary arguments. Domingo is great, and so is Del Monaco. None of it is necessary. Any singer whose name is well known deserves praise for his or her accomplishment. Period, imho.
@LordMgls That's crazy talk! Kaufmann isn't even a dramatic tenor. He's a lyric who overdarkens with the root of the tongue. And his small voice requires amplification frequently, the effects of which you can hear if you know what to listen for.
Giacomini needed no amplification.
So by Edmund's rule above, Kaufmann deserves praise for his accomplishment. So I praise him for getting such recognition in this strange opera world of today. But that's all.
About that strange modern opera world, these are my ideas
. Voices keep evoluting through times. Aoprani get more full sound (still considering unfaithful old recordings) and tenors more 'fragile', let's say :-P
. Good Opera is modern and completely actual music. Therefore, it mustn't be ecstactic. Keep adapting the voices to old modern repertoire. Thank Domingo for that.
I've been having a lovely discussion of this with VinylToVideo.
@LordMgls My voice is anything but fragile ;P although I'm not fully trained yet, and at 34 my chances of "making it" are tiny. Especially in this strange modern opera world.
I don't quite know what you mean in your second point (send me a message, maybe?)
Wish I could discuss with V2V but I made the tiniest criticism of Tucker on one video (with praises on others) and that was that. =/
But I'd be happy to discuss this with you! =D
There are good teachers training the old way, btw.

Brilliant! Very expressive singing. Stanislavsky would have said "Верю!" about this performance.

Who is the conductor and when, please? Studio recording, I presume?
Thanks a lot for posting :-)

Recorded in 1996. Symphonia Perusina, conducted by Guido Maria Guida.

Such a dark sound. He travels his own road. Beautifully sung.

Exactly. It confers to this the statute of very probable best rendition. 20/20
I am curious about how Kauffmann will do this years later. I believe him to be Giacomini's modern correspondent.
