Thank you for the review, I found it very helpful. You answered all the questions I had in your review. I have a 18-105 lens but will change it for the 18-200, thanks again.
How would you say this compares with the sigma 18-200mm? I understand that the sigma has some vignetting but for just about half the price of the nikon, how do the optics stand?
hi, I am an amateur photographer, and also looking to make videos on YouTube. What microphone set up do you use for your videos? The audio in these reviews is top-notch!
I was wondering if you ever do tripod and lens reviews? I just picked up a Gitzo GT1542T and it's a dream! Thought a lot of others might benefit from knowing more about this model...
@stormbytes I do lots of lens reviews at my site cameralabs . com! I've also reviewed several manfrotto tripods there too. As for the 1542, I actually own a 1541T! Great tripod - go to the reviews tab at cameralabs and check out my Alaska bear article, as I discussed it all there! Basically everything I do is at cameralabs . com - I only put a few things here on YT.
I don't understand the effect when you focus closer to a subject with the camera at 200mm and it appears to be zoomed out more than at infinity focus. Can you explainthis further? And thanks for another great review.
i have a question about the clicking sound on my 18-200mm vr II. every time my VR engages i would hear a clicking sound. unlike my other VR lens 18-105mm and 18-50mm they dont creat a clicking sound every time the VR engages. just wanted to know if theres something wrong with my 18-200mm vr II lens
@cameralabs Great review! I am new to DSLR photography. Do you think one Nikkor DX 18-200mm lens could effectively replace Nikkor DX 18-55mm and Nikkor DX 55-300mm lenses?
@SDV0307 It could replace them and be more convenient, but obviuously you'd be lacking the 200-300 range, so it depends whether you're willing to trade that extra reac for the convenience of a single lens...
@lemonontoast Sure thing! The 2006 Paul Smith short-sleeved flowery shirt is an excellent choice for Youtube presenters wanting a stylish edge over rivals!
@cameralabs Great stuff! Its a truly great shirt, still looks like new! Thanks for the really great reviews, your site is my first port of call for new camera gear. keep up the great work!
After i watched this review and went to Costco store and got my D7000 with 18-200mm lense very things work great i'm very happy for my D7000 and the lense.
For Nikon D3100, aside from the 55-200 and the 55-300mm lenses, which is better? 18-200, 18-105 or 18-135mm? :) What lens is good for traveling, portraits, those kind of stuff? :) I'm using a Nikon D3100 with 18-55mm lens kit. :D And I'm also kind of into a budget also. :) I wanna upgrade a little. :)
@toyotacelica111 Get the Nikon 35mm 1.8g prime lens. Affordable and highly rated. However, good luck finding one on MSRP price because it is generally sold out everywhere due to its popularity.
I own this lens and have paired it with a d7000 the image quality is excellent in bright light the zoom is amazing as it equates to a 38- 320 given the 1.6 crop factor, that being said it suffers in low light given it's f/3.5-5.6 focal ratio I find I have to compensate heavily with higher ISO and slower shutter speed that is when motion blur becomes significant. I am saving up for the 70-200. f/2.8 VR II THEN EVENTUALLY adding the 14-24. f/2.8 and the 24-70 f/2.8 but first I will have to sell s
Hey Gordon I have read some reviews about the lens and now I wonder if the lens will be sharp anoff on my Nikon D7000 cause in the reviews I read there is said at 10Mp sharpness is ok but at 12Mp the sharpness is edgy. But as you know the D7000 is 16 Mp. So will this lens be sharp anoff?
hello there Gordon ! i would like to ask you any suggestions on what lense would fit my Nikon D5000 ? does this lense can be used on my cam ? if no then what would you recommend ? i will prefer something cheap but good . what would it be ?? thank you in advance !!!
@tomsaunders123 Because most viewers at YT weren't supporting me. This is my full time job and I have to pay the bills and sadly the videos weren't doing that. BUT there will be a new video on the D7000 in the next few days, although you'll need to visit cameralabs . com to see it.
@cameralabs Sorry to hear that. But to be honest, I would have never known you if you were not on youtube :) ... and youtube at times makes me visit cameralabs as well.
Hello Gordon, I purchased a Tamron AF70-300mm lens for my Nikon D60 but I am having problems attached to my camera. Maybe I purchased the wrong lens? Can you help me?
Hi Gordon, Thanks for uploading this video. It's very informative, especially for someone like me who's relatively new in photography. I'm looking at getting either the VR or VRII 18-200mm lens by Nikon. I've read on a few sites that the build quality for the VR II is not as good as it was for the original. Is this true? I'm thinking of getting an original VR if that is true. I don't really do anything special with my photography and just want a do-it-all lens. Would you recommend one, please?
i know that your talking about the lens .. but just want your expert opinion regarding on what to get for my " first dlsr".. im choosing between the canon 60d or the nikon d7000. tnx!
@cameralabs i dont know which lens to get nikkor 16-85 or nikkor18-200,i heard the imagine quality is pretty much the same,i dont mind the extra wieght, anyway i was wondering which one has the better built quality?
You are awesome, Gordon!!!! cant wait to see more from you..Ive seen all your vids!!
Would you recommend OPT#1 18-200mm VRII ($850), compare to OPT#2 18-55mm ($200) + 55-200mm ($250) ---total difference: $400 assuming I am not bothered too much with changing lens often?
or better yet, OPT#3 with less than $850, I could also get 18-105mm VR ($400) + 55-300mm VR II ($400)...
Thanks a lot. I ll make sure I buy from your links together with D7000...
nice I've been a forum member of c'labs for a while now, and I really like the reviews, but that red box you include in the review to show what you can capture with various focal lengths is really helpfull, It'd be great if you could do that with all of the reviews for people who, like me like taking good snaps, but can't visualise what 200 or 85mm or whatever looks like in practice.
@kaosvr426 Thanks. I wish I could do more, but they just don't pay the bills. Not enough viewers support me through the ads, so there will be very few more videos.
@fallenembers08 No, it does cost me money to make them. If I spend, say, five days making a video, then it has to earn one week's wage. Simple as that. Remember this is my full time job, and the fact is the written reviews pay the bills, whereas the videos don't.
i'm abit confuse about the wide angle aspect of this lense. i am using a D3000 with the starter lense but now i want to buy a wde angle lense to take better photos. but wen i saw this review i though having a zoom and wide angle would be great but i'm just confused if this lense is any wider than the 18-55 that i have now.
Excellent video as usual. One thing I am very curious about is if you have done or would be willing to do a review of the Canon EF 70-200L lenses, most importantly the new f/2.8 IS II model. It would be nice to see a comparison of the four lenses in your well presented and easy to understand style.
Great clip as usual, however, I wonder how the Nikon stands up against the Sigma 18-200 fex? I have a Nikon D70s and use my DSLR mostly when on holiday and when at home, otherwise I just use a compact from Sony that does the job of everyday photography just about as good, but I'm looking for a wide-range zoom for the Nikon, and these two lenses (Nikon and Sigma) are the ones I'm thinking about.
as usual....grt Crisp review. But unfortunately NIKON didnt add much to this version II lense. i have 18-200 VR, which i purchased based on your earlier reviews.
@MrNullifier You're welcome! Don't forget you can support me by ordering through the partner stores page at cameralabs . com... PS - I had a great holiday in the Faroes a few years back!
I have the 35mm prime lens, the kit 18-55 and the 55-200 vr... I really wish I could afford this 18-200mm VR I or II. I usually use the prime right now but I would love to try that lens out on my D40.
Hey Gordon great review! I always like your detailed review, but can you please review the nikkor 17-55mm f2.8 and the nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 because there's no good reviews out there thanks
@fxE20170 Thanks, you're very welcome! PS - be sure to check out the written review which goes with it at cameralabs . com for all my results. And if you're ever shopping online, please consider going through my partner stores page to support me! Thanks!
curiosity here Will the lens lock work on any focal length other than 18 say I want to do a portrait shoot at 100 mm can I lock it there? might be a good selling point
This is a very good review. Thanks Gordon. I am not sure what the point exactly of the zoom lock is. Since it only works at 18mm anyway and zoom creep isn't an issue at that range it would seem to be somewhat superfluous surely?
@cameralabs Hi Gordon, thanks for the reply. I agree for transportation it is better to have it than not. But it doesn't solve the problem of zoom creep at all. Still this is a very nice lens.
I first found out about the focal length difference when watching a video on youtube comparing the Nikon 70-200 with the Canon 70-200. I was still scratching my head after watching that video trying to grasp how that could be. Great job Gordon on explaining this concept to all of us with examples. I have the version I of this lens and it is a very versatile and fun lens.
gordon, would you happen to know when nikon plans on releasing a new line of slr's, i would like to know about their future releases and some info on if there will be a camera that'll replace the d90.
Hello Gordon, I'm loving your reviews. I was wondering whether you've tested the AF-S 35mm 1.8 Lens for the Nikon Body, was curious to understand more about 'Bokeh' since thats an effect I like when seeing pictures that take advantage of it.
for some reason my 18-200mm wont auto focus anymore which is a pain when setting the viewfinder to my eye focus on the d7000. has anyone else had this problem? i can still use other lenses with AF. im so sad TT_TT

I need a DSLR that comes with a lens and under about $1,200. The size doesn't quite matter that much, what I need in order is:
1) Great picture quality, like D90
2) Great video quality, like T2i
3) Great auto focus, fast auto focus?
4) Fast speed, for pictures and following subject in video
Cameras I currently have in mind are Canon EOS Rebel T2i, Canon EOS 60D, Nikon D90, and Sony Alpha DSLR-A580

@quity919 The wide angle on this lens is the same as your 18-55mm. It just zooms much closer at the other end.

Hi Gordon.
Excellent video as usual. One thing I am very curious about is if you have done or would be willing to do a review of the Canon EF 70-200L lenses, most importantly the new f/2.8 IS II model. It would be nice to see a comparison of the four lenses in your well presented and easy to understand style.
sidearm613 1 year ago
@sidearm613 Yeah, that would make a brilliant video. I am looking at the 70-200mm F4L because of it's price.
MrCoolManTim 1 year ago
Great clip as usual, however, I wonder how the Nikon stands up against the Sigma 18-200 fex? I have a Nikon D70s and use my DSLR mostly when on holiday and when at home, otherwise I just use a compact from Sony that does the job of everyday photography just about as good, but I'm looking for a wide-range zoom for the Nikon, and these two lenses (Nikon and Sigma) are the ones I'm thinking about.

NikonNewb 1 year ago
Great review.
I just purchased a D90, Nikkor DX 18-200mm VRII and Nikkor 50mm Ai AF F1.4D.
I was able to make the choice after looking at the great video reviews and the written comparisons and reviews posted on cameralabs . com
I would have liked to buy from cameralabs, but it's much cheaper buying in japan so I ended up ordering it to japan :P
Great reviews Gordon. Keep it up!

Hey Gorden
curiosity here Will the lens lock work on any focal length other than 18 say I want to do a portrait shoot at 100 mm can I lock it there? might be a good selling point
onlysirdave 1 year ago
@onlysirdave Sadly not. The lock is only at 18mm.
cameralabs 1 year ago
This is a very good review. Thanks Gordon. I am not sure what the point exactly of the zoom lock is. Since it only works at 18mm anyway and zoom creep isn't an issue at that range it would seem to be somewhat superfluous surely?
kdum8 1 year ago
@kdum8 I agree, but it could loosen over time, so it's still good to have the lock for transportation.
cameralabs 1 year ago
@cameralabs Hi Gordon, thanks for the reply. I agree for transportation it is better to have it than not. But it doesn't solve the problem of zoom creep at all. Still this is a very nice lens.
kdum8 1 year ago
@kdum8 It's more for when you put it in a bag I think. Just to make sure it all stays put.
TheStig000 1 year ago
@TheStig000 OK thanks.

Is it really worth it to upgrade from a 18-105mm? I also have the old version of the 70-300mm (non VR)
mykatamari 1 year ago
I first found out about the focal length difference when watching a video on youtube comparing the Nikon 70-200 with the Canon 70-200. I was still scratching my head after watching that video trying to grasp how that could be. Great job Gordon on explaining this concept to all of us with examples. I have the version I of this lens and it is a very versatile and fun lens.
Maxfli82 1 year ago
gordon, would you happen to know when nikon plans on releasing a new line of slr's, i would like to know about their future releases and some info on if there will be a camera that'll replace the d90.

Hello Gordon, I'm loving your reviews. I was wondering whether you've tested the AF-S 35mm 1.8 Lens for the Nikon Body, was curious to understand more about 'Bokeh' since thats an effect I like when seeing pictures that take advantage of it.
