They were right about Darlene, she really was a talented young lady. I thought she sang better than Annette Funicello too.She was pretty in my opinion, but when she grew up, she became bitter about her time on here. I had a book about it, she was cursing and saying nasty remarks about all the producers and the other children. She despised Annette.
Let us face it--No matter how many times they modernize, revive, or fortify it in any form or fashion, there will be only one Mickey Mouse Club, and this is it.
Darlene was the overwhelming favorite the first season. However, Annette got the most fan mail & was the most popular - so Disney changed his focus in year 2.
I have read that Disney only got involved in recommending 3 people: Annette, Cubby & adult Roy. All others were picked by committees
In year 2, Cheryl was hired - and surprisingly got the most fan mail of anyone except Annette. So Cheryl was moved into more skits & brought back for Year 3 - which pushed Darlene further down the list.
I always thought Darlene was the most talented of the Mouseketeers, but she didn't have the cuddly-cuteness that Annette has. Annette is very talented, though--just in a different way.
IMHO, Darlene was by far more talented than Annette - she could sing, dance, and act better but for what ever reason, Disney pushed Annette over Darlene.
16 going on 17? I believe this skit was from the third season of the Mickey Mouse Club, and she was fourteen when she was originally hired for the show.
I remember Darlene as a kid. I especially enjoyed her in short episodes from the Mickey Mouse Club, titled "Corky and White Shadow". Darlene was Corkey, her dog was named White Shadow, and Buddy Epsen played the part of her father and sheriff. She was determined to help her father track down an outlaw by the name of the Durango Dude. This was my favorite.
Darlene started on the Mickey Mouse Club as a not-too-attractive girl, but by the third season (from which this video was taken)she grew into a quite pretty young lady. She probably had the most star potential of all the first-string Mouseketeers.
It's because, by this time, they wanted to make her more like the favored Annette, who was actually dull and kind of stupid looking. Darlene was charming. Somebody ought to do a follow up on her if she' s out of prison. She could make some mon on talk shows telling what none of the other Mouseketeers won't.
I well remember the show the first time around! I was seriously in love with Darlene, in a six year old kind of way, and could never understand why the other little guys liked Annette so. Darlene was easily the most talented of the original Mousketeers.
Bobby, Tommy and Lonnie are attractive to me, I wish that they were this age now, because right now theyre in their 60s... .lol

Her acting was always "hammy" - whereas Annette didn't try so hard (not to say Annette was a Class A actress!).

Actully who cares what happened to her. And it was a white collar crime with her husband.

Why don't you try looking for it on a soundtrack-perhaps on Amazon or EBay.

Poor Darlene. She was sent to prison twice. The last time was for fraud and conspiracy. I think she's still in there.

It's very sad. She was released already I believe. I wish her peace from now on-and happiness.

This was a production number seen at the beginning of the third season, in the fall of 1957. Note how everyone is more mature here!

I agree that Darlene was the most talented. It's sad it wasn't enough to carry her through to success in adulthood.

I used to see these shows on TV when I was a little kid in the 80s, and Darlene was a favorite. Thanks for posting!
