My parents own a car which would be a boy racers dream where I live. No modifiations, totally standard...well its an exec, but a 1.9 tdi 306. It's out ran chavs on the way to the shops, it out handles them on the back roads which we use alot. It's alittle demon.. and its a family car. used for shopping trips, dropping me and my brother to school and generally a work car taking heavy loads for my dad when he doesn't use his van. 306's arnt just for chavs, They're still good family cars.

@hunghuge12 I dont know, after looking around it would seem that neither option is cheap. If you had no car and you bought a V6 306 fine, but to take the engine out and replace it yourself seems silly to me. Besides, strip a GTI6 and give it an extra 10 hp it and it would probably be quicker.

I despise the "modding" scene, lots of plastic, lots of chrome, lots of electronics and lots of big headedness.

That car has not (besides the obvious engine swap) been built to go fast, its a show off

@XwnXJedi Well you can buy a 406 V6 for about £600. Les sif it's had a bump. Sell bits off it, weigh the shell and the engine only owes you a couple of hundrd quid. Fitting it isn't very difficult and there's not a lot more cost involved. You could probably get the lot done for under £1k. To get that from a GTi-6 motor you're looking at cams, throttle bodies, management, rod bolts and a lot of set up time. Getting 180-185 is pretty easy but after that it gets harder to get more.

@XwnXJedi Oh and while I think of it - I wouldn't be surprised if a stock GTi-6 was quicker. It's got less weight to move, stop and turn and less torque to fight traction with. In a straight line the V6 may have an edge (a small one) but most places I would put money on the stock 2.0

@XwnXJedi Well if you start tuning them they can obviously make more power. When they're standard though they're a lazy engine so you get a great whack of torque then run out of revs. I used to convert corsas to 2.0's and a standard c20xe in a corsa was a dead match for a mates 306 V6 in a straight line but miles faster everywhere else. I wouldn't think a GTI-6 would be a lot different. It's roughly 150kg heavier but 17hp up on the corsa and a GTi-6 chassis is superb.

But if you ad in all the time it took to mod the car to go that fast, and then all the time it took to make it able to comfortably drive home again... That was a really dumb race.

It's not all about engine power, good handling makes the Healey much more fun to drive.

I'm 19 but much prefer the Healey, you won't catch me in a 306 with a massive sub. The Sprite is my dream car.

The Sprite is so good looking and you don't have to pay tax.

Modern cars are nice but why dismiss classic cars, using classic cars is more environmentally responsible too.

I have a friend who drives a Beamer, I prefer classics and he prefers more modern stuff, what matters is the love of cars really.

I've got a 1967 Wolseley Hornet that belonged to my parents in the garage that I hope to get running this summer.

It's a mini with a bigger boot and luxury trim.

It's cheap because I don't have to pay tax, it's economical to run and if I fit a killswitch and keep it in the garage the insurance will be cheaper than a modern Fiat punto or Ford fiesta.

It is reliable, I'll also be maintaining it myself and using high quality oil.

Should be reasonably reliable when it works though, as long as I take care of it.

I'd be heartbroken if a thief totaled it, insurers don't take into account the rarity of the car when paying out so you get next to nothing and probably won't be able to find another in reasonable condition.
