  • Perfect music for whom I consider the greatest Quaterback in my lifetime. He was class, elegance and tough all in one package. I miss those days.....Great job and thanks.

  • 1:56 Did he actually CATCH that?

  • 2:58 Best play ever.

  • I was a Cowboy fan as kid back in the 70s. I got to meet Tony Dorsett, Ed "too tall" Jones, they were great guys.....memories.

  • Great angle of the "Hail Mary Pass" . I loved the Vikings back then, but have to give Staubauch and Pearson all the credit here. There was NO foul. If anyone wants to see where the Vikings mistake was. Freeze it and instant past 1:57. Nate Wright is lost!! Here he takes his eyes off the ball and THAT'S why he was'nt able to make the same adjustment on the underthrown ball Pearson did.

  • @ 0:14 . Listen to what Staubach says here. Today, you have players who can't waite for the end of the game so they can give their opponent a big hug and an attaboy !! Staubach statements corresponds to the mindset of a true competitor.

The hanshaking and buddy buddy stuff is left for after retirement. THEN, you go fishing together.

  • roger the dodger, randy white and bill bates my favorite cowboys of all time

  • The Cowboys of today need to sit and watch the Cowboys of old.

  • @22steve5150 hahaha...eagle fans are definitely the most butt hurt Cowboy haters.

  • Great video i'm a cowboys fan

  • One of my alltime favorite football play envolves Staubach. He is at his 20, drops back to pass, flushes right and at about the 50 yd line he holds up his hand and jogs like, "hey man, don't hit me i'm going out of bounds" then he stiffarms the db and runs the rest of the field for a touchdown. Wish i could find it on here.

  • I go to the same high school he went to PURCELL MARIAN!

  • Great song for the tribute, really matched the highlights shown.

  • Those were the real cowboys Americas. Team

  • I love the ref at 3:25. It's like he was so excited that he had to turn and share in the fans' reaction. I almost expected him to run over and high-five someone.

  • Staubach was the ultimate QB - quick release, strong arm, accurate. Good in the pocket and out of the pocket. And he could run very well. Most of all, he was tough as nails!

  • Comment removed

  • In his video of the top 100, said that every father wanted his son to be like staubach, well, i'm not even american and i dream my sons to be just like him!!

  • I am just blown away watching this! For you youngins, this is from a time when ppl held their own water instead of worrying about the contract, or what one think's they are entitled to. Watching this competitor fly into the end zone "head 1st" just reminds me of an America that we probably will never see again. Unfortunately!

  • One of the greats.....

  • cool vid

  • 2 dislikes? either we got 2 retards who dont know how to work a keyboard or a couple of scumbags visited here.....probably eagles fans or something...

  • Three greatest quarterbacks ever: 1. Roger Staubach....2. Troy Aikman....3. Danny White

  • God...what a difference in the leadership skills of players like Stubach vs players today,,,,if athletes are a reflection of the society we live in, we really are in trouble today...at least the Roman Empire had 800 years

  • The first football game I remember watching was the 1972 Super Bowl between Dallas and Miami. Now, I never saw Otto Graham, Sammy Baugh, Johnny Unitas, Bart Starr or any of the other all-time greats that came before Staubach, but he was definitely the best of his time, which makes him one of the best of all time. Personally, I would take Roger the Dodger over any quarterback from any era.

  • I'm vey much not a Cowboys fan. That said, a true Officer and aGentleman. And one of the toughest to play the position. There is a great NFL Films interview with Steeler's Jack Lambert who praised Staubach for his toughness, never give up attitude. He also said he was the only QB who never whined when you hit him hard, cheapshot or a ref call didn't go his way..... He just got up off the ground and beat you next play.

  • Just had a discussion with a buddy who are the top ten qb's of all time, and Roger is imo among the top ten. Very good arm, excellent leader, he got better when the playoffs began. Great great player...

  • I heard i can get his jersey but its around 400$? is that true

  • @gamer7459 I just bought a Staubach jersey at a Cowboys Pro Shop in Frisco, TX, and it had a retail price for $129, but I got it for $80. I picked the "farewell to Texas Stadium" patch and just took it to get sewn on this morning. I was sure excited to find out yesterday that a guy I work with has played golf with him, because his dad built RS's house. He said he can arrange for me to meet him and get my jersey signed. That would be awesome! He sure gave the fans a lot of entertainment.

  • one of the best ever!

  • Very special influence on me as a kid. The man has class and great morals.

  • if it werent for him my dad probably wouldnt be a die heart cowboy fan same with me

  • That catch that Preston Pearson made at 3:07, is arguably the most underrated catch in NFL history...it was made in the 1975 NFC Championship Game in the L.A. Coliseum, in which the Cowboys epically owned the Rams, 37-7...

  • The main reason why the Cowboys are my favorite team. Staubach could always pull a game out of the fire no matter how much time was left, the guy was just magical and he raised his teammates playing level to the highest they could perform!

  • Fought for America and came back and won it for America's team. What a guy

  • The diving catch by Preston Pearson...you just don't see guys lay out like that any more.

  • @DaddySinister That's Drew Pearson. #88. Preston was #26

  • @cowboysfan782008

I'm referring to the catch at 3:07.

  • @DaddySinister Sorry, my bad. To spin off of your previous comment, how many QB's to you see these days, going head first into a defender to gain extra yardage, like Staubach did in the following play. The "heart" of America was pumping strong in the 70's, and there was a lot less bullshit!

  • @cowboysfan782008 Very good point. RS was tough as nails. He didn't have it easy at the Naval Academy and the Midshipmen had to go through some very grueling PT during their time. That made Stauback and even tougher dude....

  • He and Elway were the best guys ever when they pulled it down and went to run. They had elusiveness as good as any running back in the league in their respective times.

  • Pittsburgh had horrible defense!!!!

  • All American... on AND off the field.

  • My role model growing up and one hell of a great guy. OMHO the greatest quarterback of all time.

  • The best ever. Forget just stats, SB wins.....add in all of it.....the stats, SB wins, his leadership, character, and his attitude. That's what makes him the best ever.

  • @katyfan1 Don't forget Troy Aikman

  • wats this song called

  • Simply the greatest of all times.

  • Brings tears to my eyes....

  • My favorite quarterback of all time i'd take him over montana favre or marino any day

  • Class act

True athlete and rare individuals in life

  • THIS IS WHY I LUV THE DALLAS COWBOYS....... CAPTAIN AMERICA.... WAS A KID WHEN I SAW HIM PLAY...AND HEY... THE 70S WAS THE DALLAS DECADE... IM SURE STEELER FANS DISAGREE.. BUT ROGER WAS STILL BETTER THAN BRADSHAW

  • Hank Hill's hero.

  • @CoolerKing37 your close man but your actually thinking of tom landry the coach for the cowboys when roger was qb hank has a statue of tom landry somewhere in his house and he occasionally has conversations with it.

  • my dog gets excited when i say Roger Staubach?...I guess he's just that good lol

  • LMAO at the juke at 2:26....Thats old time shit right there lol.

  • Loved the Cowboys when Staubach played. Hated them after he retired.

  • I see Tony romo doing this good

  • And another thing...the Cowboys had no business losing Super Bowl V to the Colts...only because they had that Epic Fail Craig Morton at quarterback...had Staubach started Super Bowl V, it would have been the biggest blowout in Super Bowl history...because on paper, the Cowboys blew the Colts out of the water in terms of pure talent...the Colts only made it in 1970, because the AFC was in it's first year, from the old AFL, and nobody in the AFC wanted to play defense, until the Dolphins...

  • My mistake...the Cowboys lost the 1967 NFL Championship Game, 21-17...

  • If you know your history, the Cowboys lost the 1966 and 1967 NFL Championship Games 34-27, and 21-1, respectively...In 66, Don Meredith threw a retarded INT in the end zone, and in the 67 "Ice Bowl" game, Meredith was completely out of his element, not even being able to call the signals because of the -15 degree temps...if Staubach would have played those games, he would'a said , "fuck it", and would have handled the Packers like a boss...

  • The course of NFL hisory would have been very much different, had Staubach played during the 1960's...I mean, he had the talent and the leadership skills that Don Meredith didn't have, which would have been vital in getting the Cowboys over the hump against the Packers...Roger Staubach could have been the first QB to win a Super Bowl...and Titletown's legacy would have been less stellar...

  • A Decent Tribute To One Of The Greatest Quarterbacks To EVER Play The Game!!!

  • what a strong arm!

  • the greatest quarterback to ever live in my mind, my list:

    #1: Roger "The Dodger" Staubach

    #2:Brett Favre

    #3: John Elway

  • Staubach, the reason I wore 12 as a QB.........phenomenal

  • Roger the dodger. A brilliant quarterback & a brilliant business man. He sold his business The Staubach Co. a little over half a billion a few years back.

  • Staubach is greatness.

  • Roger was the whole package, running throwing, quick release, accuracy, arm strength, leadership, reading defenses.

  • @firerustdragon im a cowboys fan, i hated phony homo until we won our first playoff game in 15 years this season, yeh Tony still sucks!!!!

  • I remember watching Staubach growing up, One of the best.

  • A Class act. Even a Steeler fan can concede that.

  • @ExplosiveThinMan Redskins fan in total agreement. Always hated the Cowboys, still do, but had to respect Staubach.

  • Brilliant...

  • Happy Birthday, Dodger. You will always be one of the greatest of all time. I hope that guys like Mark Sanchez realize who set the table for them today.

  • HAPPY 68th Birthday Roger!!! Forget stats and Super Bowls and the rest. There's no one else I'd want on the field to bring my team back from a defecit. A true leader...and...the BEST EVER!

  • when the word "Legend" was created, it was meant for truly exceptional individuals like Roger Staubach. What an inspiration! thank you for this great video.

  • 2:06 to 2:16 damn thats beast, how cow Romo cant do plays like that

  • he does do dodges like that every game, but sometimes it's hard to get a pass off when your have a slow o-line and there are at least three rushers chasing after him.

  • The 70s and 90's Cowboys also functioned much more like a unit than our current team. I am glad we got Brooking, and I am glad he's a help with motivation, but it's pretty sad when a new team member comes in and is able to take that role with an already winning team. Last years loss to Baltimore for the last game at Irving Stadium was a pathetic display for long time fans and old players to see. That display bugged me even more than the Eagles mauling. That said, the direction seems positive now

  • What I am getting at, is although my 1st 5yrs of watching football were spent watching and rooting for Roger and the Cowboys, I wasn't watching him the same way I watched Troy throughout my 20's, when I was old enough to really appreciate what real talent was. Living it, and watching the past on utube are two different things. I do know and remember enough of Roger to tell you that Romo is NOT at that level yet, although he did learn some lessons this yr and did improve and grow up a little!

  • I dont know why just about everyone thinks Troy was our greatest QB I think Roger was! When I look at Romo I see talent and a softness to him but when I look at Troy and Roger I see greatness. I remember back in the 90's during a game seeing Troy walking up and down the sidelines screaming at the team with a fire in his eyes he was a true leader and field general Roger aka Captain Comeback was to and I dont see that in Romo at all. Please prove me wrong Tony I would love to be wrong!

  • @FistsOfFury21 Don't hold your breath waiting for Tony to prove you wrong. He is too busy thinking about Jessica Simpson.

I am not a Cowboy fan by any means but I shake my head when I think of Romo playing on the same francise as Staubach, Aikman and Meredith. Those guys had a passion that Romo does not. Even Danny White was better. FistsofFury, I gave you the + for good comment, heck it was a close to perfect comment.

  • Roger and Troy, for one, are like football "soldiers", esp Roger, who is from a generation where most men had spent time in the service. Tony has huge talent, but is not "all football", and definately does' not posess the leadership skills of the other 2. I don't know how old you are, but I don't think that ppl think that Troy was so much better than Roger, but you would really need to be about 45 or older to have a "real" opinion on that. I watched the Superbowl in 76 &79, but was young. 41 now

  • good shi* man staubach is the best i remember the pass he threw to mike ditka in 1971 vs. the miami dolphins or something like tht it was awesome

  • Roger Staubach was the greatest quarterback in my book,he played with guts and class.I was fortunate to see him live at texas stadium back in 1977, against the redskins.

  • @tonytnt1980 Agreed tonynt..imagine if Roger did not spend his first 6 years fulfilling his naval duties. In my opinion, in terms of all around skills, passing...running, strength of arm...accuracy...intelligence and toughness only Staubach had all those qualities. Marino, Montana and Manning and others may have gaudier stats but they do not have the all around skills that Roger had. Would have loved to see 70's Cowboys vs 80's 49ers. Walsh vs Landry..Stauback vs Montana...classic we willnot see

  • we can only dream of such a matchup.

  • roger is bad ass,to bad we can't find another like him. he played hard and with heart.

  • @dan77man I agree that roger was a bad ass but so was john elway who I thought play hard too.

  • that was awesome!!!!!!! I like your style ya gotta love the H.M. pass very inspiring

  • I'm not a Cowboys fan, but I always thought the world of Roger and Tom Landry and the Cowboys of the 1970's. They had class.

  • Well, you'll be done in by your own on sunday....Adrian Peterson grew up a cowbois fan.

  • Comment removed

  • as a vikings fan the hail mary is painful to watch. staubach was great but the shove from pearson at 1:59 sent wright flying. i like pearson's delayed celebration to see if the ref was going to throw the flag.

  • Any one of you would want today to have Roger on your team fess up

  • Prove it he shoved.

  • roger staubach and tony romo are the best quarterbacks of all NFL.

  • Great player. But hasn't anyone else noticed the scary resemblence to Will Ferrell? Roger Staubach or Ricky Bobby? Anyone?

  • hahahah serious...he sorta does look like him

  • Great Video, Gave me goosebumps, especially in the end when Newhouse & Golden Richards & a few others were right there to pick him off the turf, congradulate him & make sure he was ok. Staubach, and later Aikman, and their "soldier like" dedication and leadership are the reason I have been a fan for 33 yrs!

  • Got to meet him at the Cattle Barron's Ball in the early 1980's, I was serving Tacos, really super guy..........

  • yeaaahhhhh!!!!!!! roger the dodger RULES!!

  • Staubach is one of the all time greats.

Time enough to win was his motto and he did it.

  • 2:05 was priceless. This guy knew how to be a QB and made it look easy.

  • Great contribution and great job! Roger was my favorite quarterback in my youth. "Roger to Drew, always comes thru"

  • just out of curiousity...does anybody know the name of the song used hear??

  • It was from one of the Matrix movies. Reloaded... I think. Not sure of the name, sorry.

  • alrite thanks...ill look for it sum day

  • @cellblock9

Its called Clubbed To Death by Rob Dougan

  • Yep that's it. Good call.

  • Thanks for the video. Brings back nice memories of my youth. Roger Staubach and Tom Landry were my idols when I was a kid.

  • Cowboys down 6 points, 4th quarter with a minute 42 left. Roger does it again.

  • I am a Cowboys fan but the Cowboys are not what they used to be. Im not saying I hate them but they were good when Troy Aikman, Roger Staubach, and Danny White were there.

  • In his last two seasons -- after the rules changed -- Staubach threw 52 TDs and for 6700 yds. Those were great numbers in the late 70s. Thirty years later, those numbers are not as impressive but the game has changed.

I've seen Sonny Jergensen, Darryl Lamonica, Len Dawson and Roman Gabriel play. I've also watched Joe Montana's career and down to guys like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees. Fouts, Marino, Stabler, Tarkenton... I can name many greats.

    cont...

  • Troy will go down as the greatest- but I think head to head Roger was better! I was a Dallas Cowboys fan all the way to the death of the Cowboys- I hope some day they come back- but until they get a real owner, real coach and real QB- I dont have much hope for the Dallas team- but they are NOT the Cowboys. Clint Murchison is doing flips in his grave right now- and even God wont watch the Cowboys anymore. (cuz the roof is closed and he cant afford the tickets!)

  • Troy Aikman was NOT the Cowboys greatest QB. Staubach was. Hands down. And that is no slight on Aikman.

  • ummm Im pretty sure that is what I said isnt it????

  • singlewing...

Oops, sorry. I had to re-read your post.

I think you meant Aikman would be considered (by most) as the Cowboys greatest QB but you still rate Staubach higher. I can agree with that.

Aikman was great in the post season. But Staubach was just better overall, and he was at his best in the clutch.

    Thanks.

  • Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach are the best QBs to ever live and what this song called?

  • Roger Staubach one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play. Excellent video.

  • One of the biggest reasons I became a Cowboys fan.

  • The reason why I became a Cowboy fan. Class, charisma, grace under pressure, whether he won or lost, great humility, great courage . . .

  • Staubach to Pearson...

    Was....

Even better than Aikman to Irvin......

    And that is incredible!

My god he was such a great quarterback!

  • I would take Roger Staubach... Over anyone.... If I needed a quarterback... Right now in the N.F.L.. Over any..of the past... Joe Montana...Steve Young... John Elway....Tom Brady... Troy Aikman... Joe Namath..Johnny Unitas....Terry Bradshaw.... Blah...blah.. This man was the REAL deal..... The greatest quarterback... I have ever seen...perform...
  • Ya know...

    I like Brett Favre...

    But...Brett Favre....

    Could'nt hold this man

    Roger Staubach's... jock strap

    Nuff said...

  • mrclipper23 u r truely ignorant to come leave that comment on cowboy territory i like farve as well but 4 u 2 say something soo naivly wrong u must obviously b a minnesota or even worse 4 u a greenbay fan go comment elsewhere u bum

  • @MrClipper...

Favre 10X better than Staubach? Have you seen both of them play throughout their careers? If you have and you still abide by that comment, then you do not know football.

Staubach served four years in the Navy, and he played all but two years in the pre-rules change NFL. Do you think Favre would post his numbers of today in 14 game seasons when DBs would hit receivers all the way downfield?

No doubt Favre is a future 1st ballot HoFer but don't make statements like that.

  • ...cont.

When Favre came out of So. Miss, I told friends, "This guy is going to be great."

When Michael Irvin was a freshman wearing no. 47 at Miami, I said, "I hope the Cowboys get this guy someday. He's going to be great."

    I can spot talent.

Staubach playing today and playing in his early 20s through his late 30s would have put up 350-400 TDs.

Favre never had to throw against great corners who could bump his receivers all the way downfield, throwing off routes and timing.

  • Brett Favre is a CHOKE ARTIST.

I have Never Ever seen a big name like Brett Favre CHOKE in the Playoffs Repeatedly like him. Brett is only good in the Regular season, but when it comes to the playoffs he CHOKES by throwing stupid Interceptions and you hear nothing but Excuese from Brett lovers why its not his fault.

Roger is Better cause he was CLUTCH in the playoffs.

Just wait for the Brett Favre Late Season Melt Down, like last year. Its his Trademark. Vikings will see the real Brett.

  • Comment removed

  • the Cowboys at their greatest...im watchin the game against the Giants at the stadium opener and this is just sad compared to the cowboys back then.....

  • I regret to agree with you...

I like Romo but let's face it...

    He's no Troy Aikman...

And he certainly is no Roger Staubach...

    I still have hope....

But it doesn't look too promising...

I know it's early in his career...

He just seems to make too many mistakes.

    I feel for him actually...

He had some big shoes to fill.

  • Comment removed

  • Staubach could scramble better than any QB with the possible exception of Steve Young. So great under pressure, unlike media-darling Tom Brady who folds anytime he doesn't have more than 4 seconds in the pocket (i.e. SB XLII).

  • Oh, and Tarkenton was just as good at scrambling as Staubach and Young. How the hell did I forget him??

  • what's the name of the song?

  • That was football at its finest!

  • He had so much skill. One of the best QB's with the most talent. Just think of the numbers he would have put up if he played right after college. Amazing.

  • @cellblock9...

Great vid! Thanks for putting this together.

Viet Nam vet; naval officer; leader; ferocious competitor; strong family man. Too bad Roger didn't go into politics. He could have won the governorship of Texas in a landslide.

Then he could have run for POTUS and we'd have a great and honorable man, along the lines of Ronald Reagan, in the Oval Office. Instead of ....

  • i think one of the most underated QB's ever. i wish he beat the steelers. fuck the steelers

  • Couldn't agree more. Too much of a gentlement to say what I think of Bradshaw and the Steelers.

  • Had the Cowboys beaten the Steelers in those two SBs, Staubach would have gone down as the greatest QB of all time.

And if he played today in a pass happy offense, he would have posted Montana-like numbers in TDs and yardage.

He retired with the top QB rating of all time after the 79 season. And he played 10 of his 12 years before the rule changes were instituted.

He was never voted All Pro. That was a travesty in itself.

  • staubach was the best! red right power 49 near g.o. ,it's on two ready break.

  • hes the best hes my dads and my role model

  • There's a damn good reason nobody will ever wear a #12 on the Cowboys jersey and play for the Cowboys. Roger was the MAN!

  • Roger Dodger what an athelete he was always be remembered and special to TEXAS !

  • A buddy of mine caught a pass from Roger back in 1983 or so when Roger was at a company picnic. He kept that football and he'll never part with it.

I like the scene in this video when Roger throws a TD to #89 "Iron Mike" Ditka in the Super Bowl against the Dolphins. Two great football legends.

  • THE HAMMER MIKE DITKA !

  • Before we got Tony D. Staubach was our leading rusher.

  • roger is my favorite player. i always dreamed of playing the game like him

  • We're ready for another season baby!!!!!! Here's to the 8 time NFC champs!!!! GO COWBOYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Anyone who puts Roger (who made his team) and that idiot Terry (who's team made him) in the same sentence doesnt know football! Bradshaw's best day was dancing barefoot drunk in his barn trying to hit on young girls at his horse auction...sorry pitt fans have better idols from that team to boast about.

  • Right ON! and Roger served his country too. For pitt Bliar(sp) was a stud.

  • I remember when I was younger, having a Roger Staubach jersey. I never took that thing off!

  • Roger Staubach, the man used to will his team to be better than they were. He was the best.

  • He was great!

  • i love that video of him burning the steelers d line!!!

  • Roger Staubach was a winner and a warrior, Period!

  • i wonder if staubach and bradshaw ever jad a quaterback challenge thing to see whos better

  • So by your estimation, one QB is better than the other by virtue of the fact that the talent level around one is superior than the other ?? If you put Staubach in a Steeler uniform & Bradshaw in a Cowboy uniform during the 1970's, the Steelers still win. Your comment makes no sense. Steelers had more talent than the Cowboys did, both QB's were even in skill & ability.

  • We don't remember that, we're too young. We only remember Super Bowl XXX... OWNED CRY BABY!!!

  • Roger was the best under pressure. CBS SPORTS should give him an award because the ratings increased when Roger played on Sundays.

  • Gotta love the Dodger!

  • you don't have many quarterbacks like staubach anymore with the great scrambling ability, great accuracy all blended in with leadership and thats what truly defines a great quarterback

  • "Captain comeback" was the MAN!

  • wow i so wish that he beat the steelers in the superbowl :(
