Fun to find the video – but I think this is a version two, isn't it? First saw/heard in on Night Tracks on WTBS (as much MTV as we got where I was back in the day), and I remember that it was mostly dancing and singing; no breaking through walls or anything like that. No biggie, because this one is still fun.
OMG! I loved this band. I remember searching everywhere to find the cassette. I was oin love with Johnny Dollar and my sister loved Shanti...lol Thanks :-)
@trishtommy96 On June 4, 2009 a person named Jonny Dollar succumbed to cancer at the age of 45. However, this person apparently was a song producer out of England and is not the "Times Two" Johnny Dollar.
So relieved to have read that this beautiful Man, Johnny Dollar, is still kicking! Wiki corrected their article on Times Two and it was a different Johnny Dollar that passed away....I wish we knew where he is and what he is doing!
The discussion about music being copied or ripped off for similar sounding chords ect. is played out. Really? Like everything else in life, the beginning springs from the basics and out of that a song is created. Just like life. The Lady Gaga/Madonna issue comes to mind. There will always be similarities. There's a difference between sampling and stealing. Otherwise, how would most rappers survive? I agree with Tre404. Not even close....
@nooffbutton9 ...yeah, I don't understand how this person hears a similarity between the two songs. Because there is none! I'm a musician myself, and know "chords." The two songs are completely different.
Check out my video if you like, "Songs That Sound Similar 1" or don't. I'm not saying anyone copied anyone or anything is better or worse, I'm saying the key riff is the same, and it's interesting. It's just for fun, lighten up a little!
I was wondering when someone was going to point out the grammatical error! I do know his name but that's what I get for trying to explain the difference between Ashanti and Shanti while typing simultaneously! I also know that he's a music industry professional, lives in San Fransisco, teaches at a school called L' Expressions (?) and is available for hire as a conultant. He also hs a video on youtube. Oddly, this is the only real 'pop' band I've ever liked. Thanks for the correction advice tho!
Just noticed, ha ha--this has the same chord progression as the theme from "Back To The Future" by Huey Lewis--it's even in the same key, funny no one sued, ha ha.
I had a feeling you'd say that. Sigh, why do I even bother. For laffs I made a video on my lunch break called "Songs That Sound Similar", by all means feel free to check it out, or don't. Cheers
@monkynmee57 ...in fairness, I was only 'analysing' the chorus. I see your point about the verses. Similar chords in the verses, but not nearly enough to litigate. I would never have noticed if you hadn't said something.
If you really can't hear that D-F#-A-B-C-B-A composes the foundation riff that's played under the entirety of the choruses and all but about 8 measures of the verses/bridges for both songs, my suspicion is you're either honestly not hearing it or being obstinate just for kicks, regardless, ttfn!
@monkynmee57 .. um.... did you read my last response to you? Damn, you really want the last word on this, don't you! lol....... good job researching the chords, that must have taken YOU all afternoon and evening!
@monkynmee57 ...I'm reminded of the scene in "Coming to America" where Akeem asks nebulously: "What does dumb-fuck mean?" I pose a similar query, in the same spirit, regarding "ttfn." HUH?? Tré's Totally Fucking Number-1, I'm thinking.... That works! :-)
Or... was this your signature?? TTFN: This Thread's Feeble Nitwit!
Or... Tiresome Thickheaded Fuck-Nut! Yeah, I like that. LOL
Damn, you're fun! Can't wait for your reply, professor! Give us the chords for "Rock Me Amadeus" next time!
Sore loser, sigh. Here's a tip: sometimes the best response is no response at all--I'll give you an example: if you post something interesting, enlightening or even entertaining in response to this, this WON'T be my last reply...
@monkynmee57 ....um... what exactly am I losing? Except my valuable time!! What, was there gonna be a check in my mailbox if I'd 'won?' LOL Dang, just how old ARE you??! That's some 6th-grade shit... LOL
OK...I wanted to hear this song again.. now I can't get it or the totally happy feeling I'm feeling out of my head! Very cool....Neither Ashanti or Johnny are deceased. Since we are the same age that really makes me feel better...LOL Maybe I can get them to dress up in those clothes and recreate the video/song for my private enjoyment. Nice! A girl can dream! To the both of them...thank you and you are still thought of and are still making us happy!
Living in Dallas..laying by the pool listening for this song! What an amazing time that was...Partying, school and tons of big blonde hair and fun! Sad to hear about Ashanti passing away. These guys really were so fun and still plays out that way now. Thank you for posting this!! Been looking for my cassette of it forever!
Johnny Dollar is still very much alive. He is in his late 40s I believe, possible early 50s. I know this because I know his niece. The only thing that died is his career.
@DaveWollenberg In 1988. I listened to a VJ40 Countdown episode (Big 80s on 8 on Sirius 6008 on Dish Network - Fridays at 9:00pm EST) and they did a April 22, 1988 flashback. The song was at #38 that week on Billboard Hot 100.
Shati Jones has some features like Michael Jackson as someone quoted below. I enjoyed this disc when it came out and listen to often. I never knew they had videos. Their dance moves in both videos appear to be a blend of Michael Jackson and Milli Vanilli. I have to also give them credit for their fashion in both videos. They look great! Both men very talented.
Man.... MTV used to be ON this video! Played it alot for about a month!
I finally found a copy of this on promo WB VHS back in 1999, and would have uploaded it here had I known how! I see now that I need to find a way to do it, because I have alot of gems just like this that aren't here.
JAKEVANEK, thank you so much for this! I know MANY people have searched for it and given up after all this time. Hopefully they'll all find their way back here.
RENTHOUTX: As have I! I have a copy, but it's stored away, and many is the night I would've liked to have just found this video in the past few years and chilled out with it... I've sure been checking for it every couple of months.
Yeah me too. I had this one on video tape, but my video player has bitten the dust so I haven't seen this in years. I'm so glad this vid is finally up, having looked it up wistfully several times in the past.
LOL... I am the little girl in the video!
