Why do Americans insist on heaping praise on themselves for having 7 pilots in the Battle of Britian.....some Americans even claim Americans pilots had a major impact in the BOB. New Zealand had over 100 pilots in the Battle of Britian the most after Britain and Poland. NZs population then was less than 2 million and they were 12 000 miles from home......aircrew were all volunteers and whilst NZ was a commonwealth country they didn't have to be there.Who cares if a couple of yanks were there.

Americans who came here to join the RAF desrve great respect and a memorial. They were young, brave volunteers who understood the Nazi threat and were prepared to give their lives and some did. It is always moving when Britain and America stand togeather.

@kgs42 ....I've read alot about the Eagle Squadrons...........very few of the US airman who volunteered were motivated by the NAZI threat. They were just young and wanted to fly Spitfires. People who love flying are mainly motivated by that desire to fly.......otherwise why not just join the army. Aircrew was seen as glamorous.

Even though RAF Bomber command had appalling loses 55000 (45% of all who served) they were an all volunteer force and never had a shortage of volunteers.

Everyone won, to prevent, god knows, what kind of world we would live in if 3-4 countries took over 3 continents (Germany-Europe. Italy-Africa. and Japan-Asia). Yes, we (America) did help a great deal, but without the help of the Brits, Russians, Aussies, French, & whoever managed to make it till we joined the war, America couldnt have done it alone, with Germany sinking ships at Americas doorstep
