I have a question. I always forget how tall the tail section of the plane is until I see it on the ground. Does its size and or position have anything to do with its landing and takeoff capabilities?
@maxf130 Since They have "Thrust reversal" too slow te planes down quickly, Almost all planes have it. Definitly the bigger ones, even props could reverse too slow it down quicker. This plane's got awsome thrust reversal, that why it slows down that quickly and is cappable of reverse at pretty decent speeds. So yes the designers defintly deserve some credits. Awsome Piece of enginering :)
if the landing zone is that short, how does the aircraft takeoff again? do they take it apart and truck it away, or do they install a catapult from an aircraft carrier in the ground? (virtually impossible, you need the nuclear reactor to power it)
@ebutouy11ify nice random guess. the catapult on an aircraft carrier is steam driven which does not necessarily rely on nuclear power but is readably available on an nuclear carrier.
I imagine they either push it back with a tow, or reverse thrust it back the way it cam depending on the amount of FOD and dust.
Thats probably one of the best ones I have seen... besides being in one when it is being done. its hard to be stable sitting sideways while its being performed.
the c-17 Globemaster III can fly with the thrust reversers open at be stable at a 70 degree approach angle and thus land with very little forward momentum as you can see here. Hence the 500 foot roll out
Correct, as well as achieve a tactical descent of up to 13,000 feet per second if necessary using the reversers on engines 2 and 3. That's a pure vertical desent of 147 miles per hour. And snozdog is right: tactical landing.
Lol its called tactical landing not assault landing :P no military on earth could assault somewhere by landing its plane on the airfield, esp a C17. Nice video though.
I saw this at an air show in Denmark, where the US Airforce was there to demonstrate it - they called it an Assault landing, when they did this... they didn't back up that much though... the point is to unload a tank and some men.
It took 9 secs... the anouncer said "Count with me people" just before touch down, and it came to 9 sec
Beautiful aircraft. I'm not quite sure if that qualifies as a true assault landing though - seems more like a short landing.
As I understand it, an assault landing uses a steep glide slope to avoid small to medium ground arms fire. A usual glide slope would put the aircraft in range for much longer?
I think your right mate, from what i can remember there allowed to chuck the inboard buckets out, nosedown then assult decent and just flair out at the bottem of the g/s full reverse on touch, but don't qoute me on it.
@zoomie8 if the landing zone is that short, how does the aircraft takeoff again? do they take the plane apart and truck it away, or install a catapult from an aircraft carrier in the ground?
@ebutouy11ify They would turn the airplane around and do a Short Field takeoff.. the C-17 is capable of a VERY short takeoff roll and very steep climb out to get away from enemy fire
@ebutouy11ify no if they need to takeoff again, they simply throw it into reverse thrust and push the plane back. which was deminstrated in this video.
Stop and back that thang up!

Some good engineering, that is quite some stress. Best combat landing on youtubes.

@paco291 She was light, but the C-17 was designed to land in insanely short distances.. you can see the thrust reversers open after touchdown

no
just no
a thing that quick cannot just brake that fast
and since when do planes go backwards
just credit to whoever designed this thing
