Damn... this is elementary school, first grade for me. All these years, the only verse I remembered was Novembers. If I ever pop one out, I'll teach them this song
I as a kid, I use to go to kennedy Krieger lower school and my class room practiced singing this song to perform in front of people on the last day of school before summer vacation. Good memories :)
I remember reading this book when i was in kindergarten and im 20 now. for some reason I started thinking all about my childhood books and the line "blowing once, blowing twice, blowing chicken soup with rice" randomly popped into my head.. suddenly i remembered this book and especially the cute drawings which i loved..this book brought back a lot of memories and i almost cried looking at this.
I remember reading the book when i was really young but I didn't know there was a song to it. I remember reading the October part over and over again so I would remember it. Weirdly enough I still remembered it now that i'm 19
I am reading many replies in here from this song from the childhood ages, I am 42 and I was making my coffee this morning and for some weird reason I all of a sudden remembered this song.... I havent thought of this song in decades. This song was our 6th grade music teachers favorite. We sang this song all of the time. WOW. So many others too. I don't know where you all went to school but it looked like you all were in my school too. I went to Palm Lane Elementary in Phoenix AZ.
WOW! This made me smile! I remember hearing this in music class in the 70's. Those were the days! Wish my children could've experienced things like this.
@torianathan I read this to my children and now to my granddaughter. I bought the book (again ) for myself several years ago. I absolutely love this book/song! I know it by heart <3
This is the most adorable thing I've ever heard. I'm 22 years old, and my mom used to read me this book each night when I was little. I miss being a kid. There's no doubt I will read this to my kids in the future.
I never heard this song, but my son has a DVD with the animation. I can't get it out of my head and am now listening to it to remind me that he's at home waiting for me!
YES I Found The Lil Book In An Antique Shop. I Flip I Was So Happy In Six Grade We Did A Play To This..... I LOVE IT !!!!!!!!! CHICKEN SOUP CHICKEN SOUP
I sang all the verses for this in a talent show when I was in 2nd grade. That was over 30 years ago and I still remember all of the lyrics. Now that I am older, words like "concocting" make sense!
i remember when there was an exhibit of many books by this author at the strong national museum of play in rochester,ny and there was a big bowl with pool noodles and chunks posing as chicken and the fork was a slide and children could get in i had a blast
i remember this in 2nd grade, i remember ODE records, but didnt remember Carole King ...I ALSO REMEMBER A RECORD RELEASE OF A WOMAN READING BOTH "CHICKEN SOUP WITH RICE" & "WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE" (maybe on "Camden" records) it was being read by an old sounding lady , adding her own drama and vocal flourishes on it. if you heard this you be surprised...
my mom read this to me and showed me a video with all of these songs on them. really rosie and everything. i miss them so much. childhood was so much better back in the day.
Im 40 years old, and my mom and sis used to read me the book before bed and Id always look toward chicken soup with rice for dinner every week. I remember watching the Really Rosie special when it first came out, and I STILL have the book. I MISS my childhood.
I think kids probably still sing it because you sang it in the 90's in 1st or 2nd grade and I sang it in the 70's when I was in 2nd grade. You got good taste kid!
I learned this song in 1st grade!! My teacher ended up giving everyone a copy of the book and i have kept it since. I couldn't remember the tune tho so im really glad this was up. haha thanks!
Oh, man! I remember hearing this song in Kindegarten, back in 1976. Mrs. Kentas used to put this 45 on the "Close 'n Play" and we'd all sing along. Such memories, and from so long ago... Thank you so much for the trip down Memory lane!
I sing this to my son, with the book, every night. I remembered the tune, every turn of the tune, and the bridge without having heard it since the second grade, when I was 8 years old. I do a MEAN "One was Johnny" as well.

I'm only turning 16, but I had this animated on the "wild things" video casette with one was johnny, alligators all around and pierre.
I always loved this one the best and sang along with it.
...why am I crying over a video describing children's ridiculous obsession with chicken soup with rice?

What do "baubled" and "bangled" mean? What did he (Sendak) mean when he wrote "a baubled, bangled Christmas tree"?
KiriannasBoyARtisan 3 years ago
baubles mean ornaments.
bangle is a type of wrist-ring decoration.
So, I'm assuming he was meaning he'd be a decorated tree with ornaments and ringed with gold trimming. Just my guess. :)
